Amazing video indeed, however I'd love to hear what Michael Berlyn has to say about the games instead of this black belt super Bubsy fan guy (I know it's a joke but still).
No hate mate, I remember as a kid playing this. Was hard but the first game is amazing! Allways wondered why the cart was weird. He must have got some ideas from EA haha Roadrash was weird as well
I was so ready to slam this video for not featuring Bubsy 3D: Bubsy Visits the James Turell Retrospective, but John, the absolute madman went and did it. Fantastic video.
But war would change if they added more Bubsy. And by the way, we Atari Jaguar owners got the super-exclusive Fractured Furry Tales where absolutely nothing went wrong... So you 16-bit losers can suck it!
With DF Retro, even April Fool's Day videos end up being legit and well-produced! Nicely done, guys! A little disappointed that you didn't cover the new game in more depth, though. :(
Great video. =) I like the first Bubsy game. It's a great game. Great visuals, animations and I like the character Bubsy. But at the same time, it's a hard game. But when you beat it again and again, it will eventually be a fun game. So yeah, the first Bubsy game isn't that bad. Fun but challenging game.
Thank you for this. I've been an advocate for Bubsy since the beginning. This video is very fair and informative. Bubsy, although a bobcat, is a true underdog. Can't wait for his newest title, and any more that come down the pike!
I actually bought Bubsy and Bubsy II together back in the day but for some mad reason tried Bubsy II first and couldn't get on with it. As a result I didn't even try the first game, now i wish i had. Sadly my old console is no more so i never will try Bubsy. I must say though, this is a great video and clearly a lot of work has gone in to it, I look forward to the next DF Retro that reminds me of other games I'd forgotten about. Keep up the good work DF.
The "who is that mascot?" interludes made me smile. Some serious nostalgia there. And Mean Yob? Nice throw back to Rich's time at Mean Machines magazine.
Great video John, one of your best! The problem I have with the Bubsy games is that like Zool the game encourages speed but the camera doesn't keep up in showing you more of the game world to prevent yourself from dying. Unlike Zool in the Bubsy games you only have one life so it makes it more frustrating than it needs to be. It was cool to hear great things said about Bubsy 3D, now it sounds interesting.
Great to see some Bubsy 3D love. I personally think the contsols, eve though they take a while to get used to, work pretty well for a 3D platformer with a D-Pad.
Having completed Bubsy 3D for the first time not too long ago, I think it's a solid platformer. Really appreciated how varied and clever the level design is.
i remember back in the day Bubsy hit the news in the UK (i think the report i watched was on newsround) and Bubsy was being mentioned as a game that was non violent during a rise of violent games especially ones like Mortal Kombat. So part of the word of mouth about Bubsy was that it was non-violent and so was aimed more for parents to buy Bubsy for their kids instead of other games like streetfighter etc etc. i liked bubsy. found it very difficult. still have it in my collection though. Great video. i especially liked the sonic "yeah!" voice effect used from sonic cd haha!
@@LikaLaruku Only 4 games I ever played on a console were for the Wii. Three of which were the Wii Sports + Sports Resort duo disk and Wii Fit Plus. The fourth game was Mario Kart Wii. Besides that, I only ever played on PC, but even then I stopped by the time 5th grade kicked in. I became an active mobile gaming user since then.
I actually still own Bubsy. Everybody has that one game. The game that you still like despite knowing it's not really all that great.... Bubsy is mine.
Same here. I've got Fractured Furry Tales the Atari Jaguar. The hit detection on flying enemies is garbage and levels are way too big (it takes me about an hour to get through one level). But I still pull it out every once in a while and really do still have fun.
I had that PC version. I remember that you unlocked the TV episode piece by piece, so you couldn't actually watch it all at once until you unlocked all the segments.
I remember when working for Iguana Teesside that we had a competition to create a mascot character. Im pretty sure Iggy's Wrecking balls was the result.
This was so retrospective, I thought I was watching Video Game Historian for a second. I would love to see something like this on my personally favorite mascot, Zero the Kamikaze Squirrel.
I have that game. It was OK. Some of the same Bubsy-isms apply; cheap deaths and levels that go on for too long, but overall it was still a decent game. I think it gets more hate than it deserves because: 1 - guilty by association with Bubsy 3D. 2 - You-Tubers can talk all the trash they want about Atari Jaguar games because there's so few people that can actually call them out.
I remember it took me a long time to finish Bubsy. It really made rage back then as the way it handled was counter intuitive to what both Sonic and Mario had shown everyone about platforming. It truly was a point in between the two. And adjusting your moves to that play style is what makes the game so damn hard. Apart of the one hit death of course. If bubsy had came out with a 3 hits life bar/meter/whatever. The game would probably had done a lot better than it already did commercially. But one has to wonder if it would be as remembered. Another thing to note is that whole key to the story of why the first bubsy game was even produced is the whole cartridge reverse engineering by Accolade in their fight against Sega. Which is a story that Michael Berlyn retold in a youtube video about 3 years ago.
I gotta say, I rented Bubsy back in the day for SNES. I actually enjoyed the game, though it was extremely difficult. My sisters enjoyed the game, and they were quite timid when it came to gaming, so that says a lot about both the game and the character.
I remember the hype around the first Bubsy back in the day. Though it only seemed to be found among the gaming press, while out on the playground, the only platformists we spoke of were Mario and Sonic.
@@Limerain first game i ever played! It would be cool if Epic could at least get some other studio to produce a nice reimagined version of Jazz. I'm sure they themselves couldn't care less

DF Retro is one of my favorite series on youtube. It really makes me appreciate older games and devs, considering the struggles they had to overcome.

Thanks for the great video John. I really enjoyed the first Bubsy game and seeing it get the DF treatment was great.

I hate the Bubsy 2/Zool style level design. Always felt like a giant box with random shit littered around.
Typical euro platformer design of the era. Add on an unforgiving timer to complete the package.

I've been saying for years Bubsy 1 isn't that bad. Its flawed as hell, but its far from terrible. Bubsy 2 makes me want to die though.
Even Bubsy II isn't *that* bad, compared to a lot of other western platformers from the era. Not that I want to play it again...
