The maid had an attitude many blacks had at the time...she felt that Poitier was living 'above' himself by marrying a white woman. It is a subtle form of prejudice that still exists among some black people. If you are not an American black it would be difficult to see and understand. But that's it. Has absolutely nothing to do with the fact the the maid raised her.

That part wants to show that the nanny (and family also) isn't against the relationship between John and Joey because he's black, the real reason why she's against it is cause that girl, who she took care since she was a little baby, now she's a woman and if she get married she'll leave the house forever! You see she's not against the friendship between the white delivery boy and that black girl
