I like to separate the lights and shadows first and then put in the darkest darks. It is a good idea to put those darkest darks before you start working on the halftones, so that you can judge the subtle values better. Filling in an initial value layer is personal i think.
Your drawings really help me understand how body parts work. I use to not pay attention to body parts such as legs and arms. I was always wondering what I was doing wrong. I would either make the arms too long or legs too short or face proportions too long or close together and it didn't look right. so I remembered my old art teacher from highschool recommending you and I looked up your channel and watched a video and drew off of it and the outcome was amazing. Thank you. Your art is amazing and so are you.
Thankyou so much for replying! It's great to get an explanation of why certain artists do things the way they do, it really helps to understand what it is to look out for while shading.
I love your tutorials! I'm currently majoring in graphic design and I literally always tell everyone in my university to watch your videos! Great great help!
You just make this look so easy to go about it! It made me try it thinking it was simple, but it took me a few tries to get it correct for the most part. Again, great video.
superb as always. I like how you picked out elements of the reference selectively. Special shout out to ... Jilmar Altamirano, if you're the one who always does the incredible motion animations for the skeleton... maaan, you're fantastic! So much expressivity and emotion. Amazing work!
all u need to do is practice, the more drawings u do the better u become, its best to draw drawings wut u believe is easy 4 u and eventually u will become good, Practice Makes Perfect!
Any one can draw, it just takes a drawing a day!! I have seen allot of people that said just what you said, start out drawing one small picture a day. After 2 two months they got so much better they impressed there self wIth how much better they had gotten. JUST TRY!!
Kudos for an excellent, excellent presentation! The side by side allows me to see exactly how you as an artist captures form, then refines it to the finished product. I will study this many times until I "catch on" how to paint what I see, not what I think i see. Would love to see a similar presentation of your doing a portrait, or even a landscape. Thank you so much for this innovative tutorial!
What kind of charcoal pencil is that? What is the brand? and the type of pencil? I'm not satisfied with the charcoal pencils that I use for my art class. Would you recommend any good brands?
It is a Conté à Paris Pierre Noire 1710. Comes in various grades. Proko uses a 2B I think. It is a buttery soft pencil more like a very very soft color pencil and not so dusty like a charcoal pencil.
THANK YOU! I suck at drawing skeletons, this really helps out, next Halloween maybe you could do a special of drawing either the wolf man, a bat, a tarantula, or maybe the creature from the black lagoon.
Hi, I watching anatomy play list, and wonder there isn't anything for skull and face muscles. If you already teach them, can you put them in playlist? And thanks a lot for your videos, I learn a lot 🌹 (sorry for bad English)
It interests me the way you lay in shadows. When I was in Drawing II, I was told constantly to always lay in my "blackest blacks" and "whitest whites" before any other shading, is this something that you agree with? You seem to work with midrange shadows fairly early. Also I was told to always start with an initial charcoal layer on the page, are these mostly things for a full illustration only, or is it more a matter of individual preference?
I feel like you aren't pushing the forms as much as you should be. You're inventing your own forms, and simplifying them. Your drawing didn't have as much of a faceted surface as the reference. That said, I'm really in love with your pencil illustrations. They're great!
There are people who strive to draw everything exactly as they see it (human photo copy machines) RUclips is full of videos like that. Personally I feel that isn't much of a skill. They are slaves to their reference as many of them only possess a superficial knowledge of what they are looking at. They follow it like a paint by numbers and every color, shadow and line goes exactly where it needs to be to get the reaction "woahhh, that looks like a photograph". The school of art to which Stan belongs is one where deep knowledge and understanding of form, lighting, anatomy, etc is what they strive for. This allows them much freedom in their art. Like Jeffrey Watts says. something along the lines of, "a good drawing is based on what you know, what you saw, and what you wish you saw" In other words, knowing enough to be able to invent over what you see in the reference, or in Stan's case, simplifing that which he deems unnecessary to over complicate/render.
Hah, probably the best advice for how to draw a skull on all youtube: "Use a frickin' reference". Though you're using a 3d skull (which is lacking some anatomical features), but okay. :)
The music sounds like it would've worked well for an MMO's halloween event dungeon. Pretty cool to see I'm not the only one drawing on halloween, although my subject matter was scary in a different way ;)
I love these videos, but some of the planes changes in this one are killing me. It's so much easier to spot them in others' works than while you're doing your own, but....ahhhh! Whyyyy??? Biggest for me was the flattened angle of should-be dynamically angled teeth and the cheek-bone to nasal bone ridge. Both got flattened where there is still a very, very soft curve. And the forehead just above the glabella, and the soft, minute curves that link the temple area over the parietal bone to the zygomatic process.....I'm crying inside from the missed opportunity. Geometric connections, man! Still, tho, aside from my rant this was another awesome video and helped me to notice those things. It'll remind me of the subtleties next time I draw.

The overhand grip is so nice ....it makes the pencil like a brush..
Skulls genuinely looks wonky, so don’t get upset when your skull doesn’t look good! They rarely EVER do so!
I am using this legendary skull drawing for my HW 💀💀☠️
Can't believe this vid was 10 years old
