I immediately had 2 thoughts on this update. The first was "can you make a surfboard?" And the second was "could you make a vehicle that has wings to produce lift, but uses sails to propel you forward and help you glide around. Not a plane, but more like a giant kite glider thing"
When sailing smaller boats you lean out the boat to equal the sails, maybe put weights on the end of a piston at the level of buoyancy and the piston on a servo to counter the force f the sails
I think trailmakers should add ion storms which fly around following the wind, and if they hit you, disable your engines and blow your boat around, that way sails have a use. Also I don't think you should be able to repair on water. It's useful, but takes away all of the fear of treacherous waters.
18:12 With real boats, the part of the boat in the water is more like a large rudder/wing, that dictates where the winds pressure is conducted to. Most of the time more sails also means more boat.
Use the triangular sails for going diagonally into the wind and side-on to it, they shouldn’t push u over as much, and if u angle them right, u should go fast upwind. Idk if this is how the game works, but that’s my experience from sailing irl. Please like so he can see, this could be useful.
If anyone sees this, just know that sails don’t shine when used on water, but shine when used in place of wings, honestly they might have made wings obsolete
Well the main difference between sails and engines is toggling for different speeds without you driving it, speed is variable for sails and depend on angle of sail against a wind. So, technically you can it drive itself with little steering.
Idea - make a plane utilizing sails in stead of wings, it'll turn out to be like a steam-punk airship, could be cool! (Because I assume they are functional wings, just, they have physics varying their use) Also love that you use your Catarinth songs in your videos sometimes, they are truly great songs
I love that he gets the books and misses the text that say "resets in water" and is confused when the book vanishes when he sinks down. This is not criticism, I just think it's really funny.
They should only let the player use the powered propulsion options after they progress in this world. So at the starting you are forced to use the sails making them more useful.
as someone who has sailed the sails should be more straight so only on a slight curve I recommend putting the sails on a rotor (spin point I forgot the name) so you can change the angle depending on the wind.
I have a very interesting idea. A sail-powered plane. You have done jet-powered planes, you have done cannon-powered planes, but have you done a sail-powered plane?
it would be cool if there was a fuel mechanic, like scrap mechanic survival, where you cant use engines if you have no gas, that would make the sails more useful
Seeing that Viking Island there, I wanted to say, "Welcome to Berk!" I hope Scrapman will have some good luck making a hybrid sort of vehicle to help navigate around. Clearly he's gonna need to do some diving at times too.
You can totally make gliders using sails. I've found they hover better than regular wings but lose momentum faster. I made a plane glide with thrusters to use it. When not using them, it just kinda stops and very slowly floats down, kinda like if you have enough gimbal thrusters to almost stay level, but not. Granted the thing has more sails than actual blocks soooo....
@InfiniXCat in movies aliens are often depicted abducting cows and making crop circles, so would it be a stretch to assume that they pick up other farm things?
This has been a special journey for me I remember watching you play scrap mechanic for the first time and so many other older games and I remember watching you play trail makers for the first time so many memories watching you growing up watching you really thanks
19:09 they can help you by so much, when you are just a boat without any sails the wind can knock you around. OR when in high wind areas you can go much faster (from what I'm guessing)
This was a total surprise, I had no idea it was coming and I love it. I have played a few hours of it myself now and explored the entire map, and it turns out a really well-balanced (preferably stabilized) helicopter is pretty much required for a lot of the pieces so it's not all just boats. In fact the closer you go to the corners/edges the more intense the waves and wind get, so boats are a really hard to use in those areas. I do love the new water/boat mechanics and the new blocks though, and I am totally going to make an excessively large sailboat for just cruising around. I hope they add wind to other maps too.
Only when I try to build a sailboat in this expansion did I realize for the first time how complicated sailboats are. You need to manage the rotation of the sail and the rudder at the same time just to move forward and it depends on the current wind direction. Yet people figured out how to sail against the wind hundreds of years ago.... amazing.
I had some questions about the sails 1.Can you make a wind powered plane, car and submarine with sails 2.could a propeller power a sail 3. how many sails IS too many sails
Kinda curious how viable a helicopter would be on this campaign. Would make for a fairly good scouting vehicle and possibly even a bit of a salvage vehicle as well if it can handle the wind.
I tried it, the wind is really somewhat of an issue for delicate maneuvers, but with a good Heli build, it's manageable. I just wish there would be more land mass. The Islands are quite vertical and not too much fun to drive on.
Make a seaplane, I think that would be very cool and a lot of fun. U could even attach a magnet to the bottom like a winch and lower it down to get to the underwater treasure, not effective, but fun.
wow, will have to try out the tractor beam. The magnet was so bad with explosive salvage and even kept crushing itself with normal or my whole creation if big salvage. I used claws for everything in survival just because it was so much more reliable, and actually could get things to center without fiddling.
I want to know if they made the triangle sails work as they do in real life. Just as you experienced, square sails do not let you sail without any portion of the wind's vector being the same as the direction of travel. Triangle sails didn't provide as much pushing power as you experienced, but they can provide forward movement even slightly into a headwind. Old sail boats used a trick called tacking to sail headwind. Wikipedia has a good article called "Sailing into the Wind" if you want more details.
15:00 that counterweight is called a centre board and irl is needed for a boat to move forward instead of downwind Edit: this answers 18:10 however triangle sails work best when reaching (cross wind or right angle to wind)
There’s some pretty specific physics involved with sails in order to sail against the wind. It’s not possible to sail directly into the wind, you’d need to go at an angle and using the sails as an air foil to create a pressure difference it allows the boat to sail forward by redirecting the net force enough to push you forward
I would really love to see for your vehicles an old plane with propellers, a cool sailboat that is practical and an offroader like the Ford Bronco R. I'm also super exited to see more stuff of this expansion. Really love your Trailmakers content
So 2 things scrapman would want to see is that vortex on the middle of the map is not just any vortex and a sea monster can be found on the bottom of "the abyss"
While it may not be the most efficient, I think a NOMAD style campain would be cool. Like making a huge sail-boat with dockings for a car and a plane(and maybe a smaller boat).
I cannot express fully how much I want you to explore this! I don't pkay this, but watching is like 2nd best. Id love to see some sort of speed boat as well. New series woooooo! Day 11 of asking scrapman to build a piston engine car.
