  • @Eastterminalrailway is a grass roots, grind it out, small town, David and Goliath railroad story! The East Terminal Railway is the "last mile" in the ultra important rail network. Can an older guy ( not that much older! ) and his son hack a RR out of the trees , restore the tracks, and find customers? The ETR Nation votes YES! Nature votes NO! Customers? Jury is still out...

(Graham, former producer of everything at the ETR). dad if you want good steady camera footage pretend like you are holding a super hot mug of coffee well running. Use you shoulder, elbow and wrist like shock absorbers to keep your hand steady. As your body falls as you step raise your arm up to compensate. Then lower your arm when you take your next step. This will give you much better video for the very amazing price of free!!

Just a quick hint, you can use the overhead satellite view on Google maps to measure distance including curves by right clicking on the spot in the picture. That way you can stay inside, warm, and keep your boots dry. I use it all the time to measure placement of the cross buck signs, round yellow RxR signs and pavement markings at RxR crossings.

We have a shingle plant from Owens-Corning on rail a few miles from here and today it seems most of their loads go out by truck. The plant and the track are less than 400 yards from CA 99. Maybe the problem we have out here with finding enough truck drivers will get some of these manufacturers to start using more rail, as they once did.

    Railroad Paradise
As I walk thru Death Valley where I tie up my train
I look at locomotive #2021 and realize its just plain
But that's just perfect for the ETR and me
You know we shun things like new ties and electricity.
At 4:30 in the morning I'm scraping paint
Graham feeds me White Castle and works until he faints
I've been digging and clearing for so long
Even Mrs. ETR thinks my mind is gone.

Drove the Engine once or twice
    Living in a Railroad Paradise.
    Endless work and free advice
    Living in a Railroad Paradise.
ETR rents the track at a discount price.
I'm a man of the rails and will not fail
Got a chainsaw in my hand and spike in the rail.
But if I finish all my work and you finish yours
We'll go down to the mainline and watch a train go by.🚂

Paw Paw was our base of operations for scenic, dinner, and freight operations. We had two "major" freight customers one in Paw Paw and one in Harford. • @briquetaverne
    @briquetaverne 2 года назад +9

The more I watch your video (jumpiness and all) the more my interest is peaked. I started drawing the map as you walked along the rails. I noted siding at 329 Ft as shingle switch, then farther down at 1029 Ft as Bakery lead. Afterward you noted that there were 3 sidings the first of which you called Canada 3. A little farther and you came to a stop for a moment after talking about siding at 1226 ft called Canada 2. You then commented about the poor quality of the video (personally I could care less the content was more important) and when you picked up again you referred to a siding at measurement 1403 ft as "Plastic plant " and went on to say you would make a new and improved video. Meanwhile... Are we to "assume" that "Plastic Plant" siding at 1403 ft is in fact "Canada 1" ? Kindly let us know in the next video. BTW a lucrative business that is always looking for transportation and space is the Plastic pipe manufacturing business. I know because my long time Friend on Long Island owns a distributorship of Plastic piping and he's always complaining about wishing his suppliers could find plants next to RR sidings so that he wouldn't always be at the mercy of trucking agencies & independent truckers that come and go out of business due to the volatile fluctuations of petroleum prices.

  • @ocsrc

Looking at the property map, the south end of the track, the property spread out into a large square.
You can extend the track south another 100 feet at least, maybe more, and you can put in at least 3 more sidings from that extension adding another 300 ft with three sidings 100 ft long
Looking at the property maps the right of way shows the main track as yours but all of those sightings that run into the buildings it shows the property belongs to that building that apparently is not occupied with a tenant
If you get up and running where you have paying customers for storage you'll need to work out purchasing that property from whoever owns it
I'm sure whoever buys that property is going to notice the tracks are on their property and it would be a really good idea to buy that land have it split off from the building by the realtor that's trying to sell it before a commercial customer buys it
You could get somebody like Trump who would ask an insane price to buy it or to rent it and wind up ripping up the tracks out of spite
I've seen this happen many times with horrible human beings that will buy derelict properties just because they see another business is using the property
There's a company in Florida that no one can figure out who owns it that they look at property maps all day long and they find developments and neighborhoods where the road is not a public road and is on a piece of property that can be bought and they buy it and then they block it off cutting off everyone's access and then they demand millions of dollars more than what the property is worth from each property owner and eventually take the people's houses for pennies on the dollar
There's a lot of evil people in the world and you've got to be proactive to not get in a situation where somebody can hurt you
We've already seen them smash out the windows on the locomotive and that almost certainly was someone at one of the businesses
Getting a little shed alongside the tracks something you can buy from Home Depot and get power and internet into it and wire up IP cameras to keep an eye on your property and your equipment

  • @ElevatorAl
    @ElevatorAl 2 года назад +2

I haven't seen a company meeting in awhile. Is it possible to have a hypothetical "budgetary" meeting involving the track? Specifically if the ETR hired out (again hypothetical) the necessary tie repairs, track grinding, switch replacement. How quickly would a hired company be able to do it, would it actually be cost beneficial (if the ETR real life pockets were deep) versus length of return? In the same discussion the tie in would be anticipated cost savings with ETR doing the work with a theoretical completion date. I hope this makes sense.

Sweeet!!! now I can actually model a railroad down to the HO scale feet.. all 54 feet without condensing it down, but my wife draws the line and told me HECK NO!! maybe in N scale..

    • @jonglass

That just goes to show how huge real railroads are. The idea of modeling them is kind of absurd on the face, but we get-r-done somehow. ;-)

I was just looking at the power lines crossing your track on Google Earth. Are they paying you rent for that crossing? Do they have a recorded easement? If not the power company may be your 1st paying customer. The Florida east coat railway it very blunt in their track crossing rules. If you want to cross our tracks overhead or underground you will be paying us rent for that land. I am not sure how land use for Railways works in Ohio but in FL it is 1st come 1st served. Meaning if the railway was there 1st they get 1st right of eminent domain. If the state was there 1st with a road the railway is subordinate. The previous owners may not have kept up with Utility crossings so your right to complain or charge them may have lapsed. I would not be a bit surprised if the power company was paying rent to the PO and just stop paying when you bought the land. Heck they might still be paying the previous owners rent.

Ohio is the same way. At least it was on the PRR branch that ran thru our farm. It caused all sorts of problems when the line was abandoned as the PC holding company kept the land and the rent. When it was settled in court, along with the fact that many of the deed said RR use, the gas/fiber optic line people got the ROWs for free.

So how are you going to get the locomotive on the east side of the cars to spot them in industries?

  • @mysterion4301

The Graffiti Railroad has more locos and cars than anyone else in the business. I was at the Tehachapi Loop today and noticed that they had more equipment rolling than either UP, BNSF, Procor, or Ferromex . It's too bad they don't sell stock.

On the use of the measuring wheel, run it on top of the rail for a more accurate measurement. Then for mapping the stationing will increase northward. Just my engineering background coming out here.

OK Brian, ya gotta stop with the opening monologue: bad seat, pedal-less unicycle: laughed too loud and woke up Spousal Unit in next room. Not a good start to my Valentine's day, despite the walk along quiet snow-covered tracks.... Keep it up!

If you guys didn’t have the time or take the time to watch the video, if you go on google earth and search “East Terminal Railway”, it’ll bring you right to this line. You can then use the measuring tool that the app provides. Then, you can measure all the measurements you need.

You need a gimbal for the camera and they have them on eBay and I'm sure on Amazon and probably other places and they are less than $100 and they provide stable video regardless of what's going on

Cool concept for a video Brian, was wondering if you could talk about how you'll get your locomotive on the north end of a cut of railcars you'll be shoving south down your track, considering there's no run around track or short stub track to park #2021 on out near the mainline switch. I suspect that you'll say that you'll park on the plastics plant lead 🕵‍♂

I'm a buy an HO scale 44 ton GE and repaint it to whatever you guys paint your real one to. I already started to model your railroad into my current ENRL (Elfnet Rail-Link) layout though.

Looks like the shingle lead has an intact switchstand as well. Might be a silly question coming from someone whose rail experience is limited to HO scale and railfanning from trackside but would it make sense to spike that switch and move that stand to the one you need to pry the points over and respike the other stand?

Thomas Edison’s relatives came to the Colonies before the Revolutionary war. They were loyal to the Crown and at the end of the war went to Canada.
In the 1840’s? There was a revolt in Canada. The family said we are not making That mistake again!
      They supported the revolt.
It was put down and they had to get out and move to Ohio.
So Thomas was an American and you can visit his childhood house in Ohio.
