OK, you guys have prompted my first ever RUclips comment. The ETR has become my most anticipated video series. I love that you are sharing your vast knowledge of railroading. Having watched every episode, I commend your presentation and video improvement. By the way, don't sell your chainsaw short. I have the same one and It's, by far, the best I have ever owned. Granted it's not for big cutting but it's such a pleasure to use. I find it so rewarding that you are reclaiming from nature "inch by inch" a viable, working railroad. Bravo to you and your trusty side kick!
To see the rust streak caused by the engine running over those rusted rails for the first time in years warms my heart! Good chance the bakery will become a customer of your railway,& give permission to store # 2021 for the winter since they will soon have rail service restored! Wish I could volunteer!! Am Canadian. We lost our entire rail system in 1988. DEEPLY miss it to this day!! During last few months was lucky to be on board to video tape several regular scheduled freight trains, & work extras collecting derelict rolling stock to be scrapped. You got to have a official ribbon cutting for the line with first revenue train ! ! !
@@eugenetswong I'm a Newfoundlander. Not a easy task to undertake. Above all you lots of planning needed. You must have industries willing to transport goods on such a short line for further movement on class1 railroads, also costs of short line track matianance.
@@pjasylYeah. Maybe we can convince cities to not tax us via property taxes, so that we can have more time to find customers. Where in the video is the rust streak over the rails?

So nice to see these tracks getting used! down where I'm from most of our railroads are trails all but one 51miles have sat used for the past 12 years the owner for smart and mothballed the line in hopes of reopening, now if we can keep them, dam vandals, away. I'm in Nova Scotia, Canada.
Fantastic seeing 2021 on the move 👍🏻 hopefully for safe secure parking 😀 Not many people would take on such a big project like an old railroad 😃 2022 will be so exciting guys 🤣🏴
Okay here is a little tip. I noticed you oiling with the oil can in your switch lock. When you change the oil in one of your vehicles (preferably gas engine) save your oil for those projects. The used oil is thinned out from use and makes a good penetrating oil. Is awesome on old rusty bolts an fixtures that see lots of weather and doesn't cost you an arm and leg. Stay safe you two.
There's an abandoned line behind my house that is just lying dormant since 2010...& Would love to see someone restore it like you guys are doing.... lot's of great memories hearing the horns a mile away when it was crossing the State highway and coming down to the warehouses behind us.... we'd usually ride the ATVs out ahead and wait for them to pass by at 5 mph because the tracks and ties were in such bad shape. They'd run a push/ pull set of SD40's early on it was Conrail and last year's Norfolk and Southern....I also remember in my childhood seeing the Old pup type switchers and caboose driving past...the guys in the caboose would invite us in to ride around when they were moving cars .... such good times
This is so cool! Might be time to invest into a powered limb saw. Tree limb cutting tip: Make a shallow cut on the underside of the limb first, then cut down through the top. The branch should just fall down then.
It's awesome to see you guys get more trackage to use and the clean-up/restoration processes on the locomotive and tracks. You guys certainly have a lot of work ahead but you'll get there no doubt. You need a big saw like a Husqvarna farm boss, a great gas saw, and would handle all your needs no doubt. I'm in the Washington DC area, I wish I lived closer I'd actually volunteer on a weekend just to be a part of seeing a small business in railroading get off the ground and running. I've always had a fascination with trains and the trucking industry. (I drove in the trucking industry for a while hauling doubles from NJ to Florida weekly). I'm thinking of getting into the railroad profession when I retire from my current job. in 2 or 3 years. I'd like to work for an "underdog" shortline such as yours. The only players in the DC area are the big boys, Norfolk Southern, and CSX.
I would really love to take my skid steer with the brush hog down the sides along the tracks and give you guys some room to work. It would reduce the trees and brush to wood chips in a fraction of the time. But there would need to be white castle hamburgers involved in the deal.
I showed my wife this video of you and Graham out working on the new extension, and we both started remembering about how we came so close to having our little railroad almost 30 years ago. It almost make me regret retiring...
It would be VERY cool to see you guys link up and possibly do a video with ccrx 6700 as he does a lot of maintenance of way video on RUclips also. Someday perhaps! This is all so cool and interesting! Keep it up 👍
Love your site. You should treat all the stumps with a herbicide to keep them from regrowing back. Just use a paintbrush to coat the tops of the stumps. I did this on my property, some types of trees have a tendency to send out shoots after they have been cut. This will kill the trees and any brush.
Welcome to 2022.,You are slowly but surely, moving forward. Looking forward to following your progress for an entire year, not just a few months as the previous one was going out.
Ok, right on time, I received my ETR coffee mug yesterday afternoon. I am enjoying a cup as I cyber supervise you. Great job as usual. Take care! Be healthy!
Sure hope ETR has a porta-pot after consuming the colon cleansers!! We get them several times a year whether we need them or not. Lol. In my early years of rural fire service I taught everyone a very valuable lesson --- at least one full roll of TP in every apparatus. You never know when you might need it.
Cut down the brush and trees, rent a wood chipper and load the chips into high-sided gon for delivery to somewhere off site. Instant customer. Anything closer than 8' to the tracks needs to go. Man, if I had a car, I would be right there doing the job right the first time. 24" sears chainsaw, bar oil, gas, sharpener, etc.

I get so excited when a new video drops from the ETR and these last 2 were fantastic. Would love to see the tie replacement next!!! This railroad needs some freight cars to complete the scene.
A brush cutter like the Husqvarna 336FR is what you need for saplings like that. You can take them down to the ground very, very fast. The 'pro' harness makes it very easy to work with. Once you cut them, make sure to use Tordon on the stumps or the trees will come back like a bush - worse than when you started.
I have the Ryobi Expand It yard tools with many attachments like the line trimmer, blower and hedge trimmer. Also the POLE SAW attachment. You need to got one with a GAS motor. You can get a 2 stroke or 4 stroke - the 2 stroke is a little better for the pole saw. It works really well.

Brian, you guys should come to the Amherst Society Railroad Show this Saturday in West Springfield, MA. I bet there would be a lot of people there that watch your youtube channel. Including me, I'll be there. And again it was great meeting you in Plant City, FL.
That reminds me of our brush and limb clearing before we got the domed dinner train cars on the KLS&C. On one run I was the conductor and crew boss. We had 85 and caboose 542. We were between Lawrence and Hartford. We had this big tree with a big limb over hanging the tracks. I pondered for a moment. The limb was too big and a bit too high to safely get from the roof of the caboose. Neither was I comfortable that the domes would pass under. I ordered 85 to back up about a hundred feet. I ordered our chain saw gang, "Frick and Frack" to take down the tree. In about 5 minutes that tree was in 3 foot sections piled neatly in the ditch.
I can't help thinking that ten years from now you'll look at this video and say, " Boy we've come a long way. ", This is naturally after your servicing all of these industries. It's called blind faith.👍
...oh yeah, the LS&I are retiring their last u 30 c's on the 15th. if you wanted, you could get a couple of plows pretty cheap, and a 3 chime horn. that would dress 2021 right up!
yep, rear gear first on the hyrail.... I have a boom truck at my railway. although we have to fix the leaking hydraulic tank in the spring, so for this winter, the truck is staying on the rails in the event that we need it for a track inspection. We also have setup our locomotive #22 at the station for plowing snow - as our locomotives have plow blades at either end - although we're not sure she'll start up in the cold... the last time we ran 22 in the winter, we had 3 giant diesel heaters warming her up for a film shoot just to get her started and going for about 3 hours.... she purred like a kitten, we left her running all night until the shoot was done the next day.... it was part of a Netflix movie called "let it snow" .. that's our train in the movie - translated into about a minute worth of film in the end.
You need a couple of magnetic LED floodlights that can be run off the locomotive electrics supply. Would be easy to install a couple of power outlets for this, to bring the floodlights home out of theft when not in use.
When you have a old switch that just doesn't want to stay locked you can also use a spike hammer it into the tie and hold the point in place, go real slow over the switch but it should hold.
It's been a lot of fun watching this sequence of events unfolding. I'm inspired to quit my job and start playing with 1:1 trains instead. My ONLY gripe is that you bought a 45 tonner WITHOUT the side rods. I mean, you gotta have one with siderods just for the cool factor. But I'm pretty sure your unit will have a lot less truck and drive maintenance. So you did make the sensible choice. Great to see your railroad coming back to life!
If you had a pole saw, you could extend your reach from the engine and do a better job of clearing the track. If you trim so close to the engine, new growth will be right back in the way in no time, and larger railcars may still hit branches along there.
Hey guys, I am so happy that you have expanded the ETR. I know that ties are VERY expensive as I have worked to replace them on the now defunct Louisville and Wadley RR. From the looks of the new track you will need at least 3 to 4 hundred new ties and that will amount to about 60 to 80 thousands of dollars or more. My big question is how are you going to afford to buy them? Keep up the good work you are doing.
Did I observe rock/ballast on top of the switch tie plates between the rails. That would make it difficult to move the switch rail close to the main rail. Nice video, though on the dark side... LOL
The high speed videos are really entertaining. Also, y’all need one of them battery powered pile saws to ride shotgun on 2021. Those things are no joke!
Why not use your engine as a tirfor (winch) to get trees and shrubs out of the ground. When I'm restoring canals in the UK we use them some times tying rope or chanes to several at once to the tirfor. Your engine would do the same, with large trees are cut them down till there about 1.5 yards/meters and put the chain as high as possable. Pulling them out with the roots reduces the chance of then growing again. Best of luck with the railway and thanks for the video. A prosperous and happy new year to you all in the USA 🇺🇸 from the UK 🇬🇧.

I wish you would show a tract diagram of your RR together with whatever connecting system and give your track footage.
Perhaps more and or brighter lights on the loco would be good for the future. Thanks for the videos guys.
Nice work I love ETR
1:15 "awwww dude white castle " says the so cal hippie lol
I would love to see some hoppers filled with flour!
My exact thought Orlando bakery would probably use one or 2 a week
Buy an old forklift battery, and a "bridge puller".
Bypass the dead cells, and use it in one end, lots of power!
Great to get the 2021 into a safer place so you don't to constantly board and un-board it for every use.
You ought to get yourselves a pole saw. It’ll give you some added reach if you need it. 😊
