- DESCRIPTION: This interview was filmed on location in a house near Louisiana Boulevard and Central Avenue in Albuquerque's War Zone. Selena explains the challenges for a youth growing up in New Mexico. She focuses on her mother's past criminal charges and incarceration as they left indelible effects on her childhood. Identifying as Mexican-American, the teenage runaway lived with numerous New Mexican foster families in Belen and across the state.

I’m from New Mexico, 20 years old. I love this state but Albuquerque has some real issues sometimes. And the war zone has its own rep of issues and people. But, you will meet some of the most dedicated and hardcore people out here. Serious and cutthroat. I find a lot of pride coming from here and I hope it continues to flourish and its people continue to grow. I love seeing interviews of people from here, thanks for this. My mom and I work our asses off and even that’s a struggle. My mom’s abusive alcoholic ex was in and out of prison and staying around the war zone for a bit, and I went to middle school closer to that area. So much life and culture but also so much heartbreak and real glimpses into reality that aren’t so sweet. I hope she makes it through, she is young just like me. She has so much ahead of her
That pride is so dumb. ABQ is ok but way better cities
Katy Swift you could say that about anywhere. You can have pride in any place and it’s usually somewhere you’re connected to, like how I’ve grown up here. Say you have pride in coming from LA or Atlanta. I could say that’s dumb, there are better cities. It’s all relative. I have pride because this is where I’m from and it has its own issues like every other place in the world but there is also a lot of beauty and strength in it
War zone lol that's one of the safest neighborhoods in Albuquerque nowadays I remember the war zone in the 80s 90s all the way up to 2000 when the California baldi's thought they were going to take over New Mexico and the .P got involved it was game over for them
I wish this girl nothing but happiness, success and that she will read the Bible . No matter where you live no matter what town or state you live in there is good and bad. It is how you decide to live your life. God will guide your way if you obey him. Miss Texas Reppin I hope you think twice about what you just said. This hits hard. I am from the same area and am Native. I could relate on many levels of my ina (mother in Sioux), abuse, and the system. She is very strong to continue in school setting a healthy example for her two children ❤

From Albuquerque nm born and raised. Mother used to Lock me up for days I’m a room no food no water no tv just darkness for a couple years. Only food I got was what my gma could fit under the door. There’s so much more to my story also. I’m sorry you went through what you went through brought me to tears. I have a son now I’m trying to get my ged and work on my self...your last words got to me. My kids have more ppl who love them than I ever had. My son is blessed I thank god for that and your a beautiful mother ❤️ they are lucky to have a mama who went through what you went through cuz you know real pain. You’ll always Know. So they never will have to. ❤️❤️ god bless
I hope you are learning how to be gentle with yourself and take good care of yourself. Living through abuse as a child made it hard for me to give myself access to all the support and and resources and kindness that are available in this world (as well as a familiarity with dysfunctional relationships). I'm 44 now and after years of therapy and 12 Step recovery work in sobriety, still have to watch closely for my tendency to neglect myself as well as a high tolerance for misery and pushing myself too hard.
We all deserve access to professional support and expertise, the opportunity to learn every possible tool that our parents didn't know how to give us, and guidance from people who have been in our shoes and so know the invisible obstacles we have to overcome inside and have suggestions for how to live a joyful life. For years I avoided that as if getting help would somehow prove that I wasn't damaged. I wish I had gotten over that silliness sooner!

She wants a better life for her children. New Mexico needs this mindset. Wanting better because we know better will get us where we want to be. New Mexico is ranked 50th in child well being. We are not defined by this statistic. We can start with providing a safe environment in our homes for children.💗 Let's do better.
We also need to vote out our career politicians who get rich by keeping us poor.

Dodge City. Totally Lawless when i lived there early 90's. Never felt safe without a pistol.
War Zone, Barelas, SouthValley constant daily gunfire; gang wars entire 5 years i was there. Poor as WestVirginia, lotsa guns, heroin, crystal meth, cocaine. Lotsa Liquor stores, strip clubs and bars.
Human wreckage everywhere.

I have my own c-abuse stories which are pretty bad but, yours probably transcend mine. In any case, I feel like I can relate. All the best.
I know your pain. I was beaten every day by my foster dad. I ran away and they took me back to the foster home. I was just recently homeless for three years because of my ex-husband he was very abusive to me too. But I’m doing good now. I have an apartment and I love it. I’m disabled now and can’t walk. But God got me through all that and I’m doing fine. I’m sorry you had to go through that. Children are suppose to be loved not abused. I’ll pray for you. All my love your new friend Sue Lyannas

Best thing to do, is save up and get out of Albuquerque!! I left (fled) I refused to have my kids grow up And go through what I did. Best decision I've ever made. My boys are 18, 15 and 13 and they have never once experienced the crimes like I did as a child. They are strong happy people!

This story is so sad unfortunately it is much like other stories here in New Mexico 😭. It's amazing to see that she is seeking change though. I hope one day her heart is able to heal from all that pain and suffering.

Grew up in California, spent a year of high school in ABQ at Sandia, met a lot of gang members in my short time in ABQ, one dude from 18st used to say "fuck crabs" all the time which I though was weird because 18st in LA are notorious blood killers but maybe its different in NM. I always wondered do all the gangs in ABQ have established turfs and boundaries? Because I met all kinds from different neighborhoods at Sandia

I taught this young woman when she was at the NM Boys and Girls Ranch about 6-7 years ago. Remember riding horses there? Best part. I had no idea the depth of your pain and the evil of your past. You have come so far. I pray for your continued strength to raise your own children in-spite of your unfair childhood. We cannot change the past but we can show promise in our future. I am so glad I encountered you again through this excellent video of truth.

This channel is amazing, some of these stories man! To think when I was little, I was fascinated with New Mexico, the culture, the state, everything, didn’t know how crazy the state is by the comments on the video...anyways enjoy seeing these videos and hearing these stories.
Privilege is having a parent who cares enough to Help their kids with their homework. And show up to their games or “any”extracurricular activity. But God loves us a broken toys girl!
we all deserve that privilege. it's a right for children. I would have killed for my mom to show up to a game.....but she was too busy doing dope. Oh well....we just have to move on the best that we can, forgive, and trust in God
Sad facts, it's something a lot of people take for granted because it definitely shouldn't be considered a "privilege" even though it is! Hell even being able to participate in an extra curricular activity is a privilege. We have to better with our youth!
