  • In this video I review the 2024 Honda Transalp XL 750 from Honda SA!
I give it a go in some traffic, and I experiment riding on some gravel surfaces with it too for the first time, even tacking some hills in the process. I also do a pure sound acceleration sprint for you to hear what the mighty 755cc parallel twin sounds like!
Watch the video to see my thoughts and see what features are available on this bike. It is one of my first reviews in this sector so please do let me know what information I can include next time which I may have missed.
I hope you enjoy the video and stay tuned for more review and riding experience videos!

A very enjoyable review, set against the stunning backdrop of Cape Town. "I enjoyed this bike more than I expected to". Exactly. This is the magic of this model - it is understated, but competent, and it 'grows on you'. 18,600 kms, and a year in (here in 'the other SA' - South Australia!) I am still saying the same thing. I too come from a long history of mainly sports bikes (Ducatis) and my Transalp replaces my 29 y. o. Cagiva Elefant 750 (which I still have)
But I agree with most of your reflections. This really is an 'all around bike'. It CAN go anywhere, although it could use some suspension upgrades to improve its off-road chops. Coarser tyres (I am now on Pirelli STR Rallys) also improve this of course. The headlight I feel lets it down, both in looks (a bit small) and function (not that bright - the Cagiva's are brighter), but the low price of this bike is relevant to such criticisms, and I intend fitting a driving light. The model misses out on an ambient temperature reading - odd on a bike with so much information available - and has no oil window (the old Cagiva does) which is a bit of a mystery for a bike designed to go on the dirt!
The Honda doesn't come with a bash-plate (the Cagiva did) which is vital for off-road, given the protruding oil sump and catalyst exhaust. And of course once one is fitted, access to the oil drain and filter becomes more difficult, as of course the bash-plate must come off to change oil and filter. The air filter access also a 'famous' shortcoming, and it certainly took me too long (first time) to replace the air filter with a K&N. I counted ten panels and about 50 x fasteners - I kid you not! But on the positive side, the original paper filter wasn't that dirty after 12,000 kms, with many miles on dirt roads.
But in spite of these minor criticisms (First World Problems?) this really is a very useful model, particularly if you have a lot of dirt roads to explore, as we do here in rural SA. It is comfortable, with easy and forgiving handling, and gets remarkable economy. Mine runs between 3.8 - 4.0 average at open road speeds (100 - 110 kmh) depending on wind direction, and more gentle speeds on dirt roads (75 - 95) it gets down to 3.1 - 3.5! 400 kms out of a tank is no problem, if you (over)fill it up to near the cap. I believe the quoted 16.9L is only up to the baffle plate, and it holds about 18L when filled right up.
Thanks for your test. The audio was a bit soft in places (just on the PC) but worth catching. I can assure those considering this model that it becomes smoother and 'sweeter' in the engine after about 5,000 kms, and is a bike you just feel like taking all the time - it is just so easy to ride. I found an improvement for simply reversing the handlebar risers, which moves the 'bars slightly forward, is better standing up, and makes the steering feel more natural. I added bear-grip footrests and the wind deflectors, included in the deal as the first purchaser here. Lucky me.
Features like the easy and positive clutch take-up worth mentioning, and I have never stalled this bike in 18k. The auto cancelling blinkers also useful, although occasionally they don't shut off, and can cancel them too soon when indicating an open-road turn-off. Unfortunately the Honda's different blinker switch placement and self-cancelling becomes a problem when I go on the other bikes... But my other two bikes are 'resting' a lot since I got this one, which says something! I am on my fourth rear tyre, and third front in that mileage, getting about 6,500 from a rear, and about 11,000 from the front (having changed both to STRs at about 6k). But for a model that seems underwhelming at first, this bike reveals 'a good friend' over longer distances, and is great for travelling. Smooth and easy, and not too heavy.

Thank you so much for your detailed comment and experience. I almost felt as if I was present in some of those experiences you mentioned.
You make valid points and I've heard that the air filter positioning is a headache for changing, but it's good to know that after some proper offroading it didn't have too much dirt.
I'll definitely work on the audio going forward and I appreciate you pointing it out to me. My aim is to give the best quality review that I possibly can and I'm glad you did enjoy this one.
Thank you for the support and I hope you have many more safe and enjoyable adventures on your Transalp and other motorcycles 🙏

The exhaust actually has a removable baffle too that sounds very similar to slip ons

Wow that is good to know that removing the baffle only can give you the sound of a slip on! I wish I could demonstrate it here but I definitely don't want to tamper with anything on the bike. Im sure it sounds amazing once it is done though! 😁
