Nice
With number 5, you're describing a very simple version of "phrase matching". A lot of genres, including my primary one drum and bass, won't always have perfectly synced intro/outros, but if you know the phrases and how many bars they are, you can do that alignment yourself. Setting up cue points around the phrase alignment can be an extremely helpful tool.
Yea. I hate when you get the nice comfy 8 bar then the next track is a 6 instead and you got to compensate on the fly. Stil haven't mastered that yet but getting better on those transitions. Used to rely strictly on the intros and outros but can usually mix earlier or later depending on those phrases to avoid the long outros to intros.
That big head moment near the end was cool
In the last mix, I’m like ‘ok, he’s gonna show how to use the jog wheel to nudge and catch up to the other song’ but nope; it stayed a hair behind.
Yeah that bothered me too
@@Ghosty_Wook i know
right lol
Love it when DJ’s really enjoy their set, number 5 made me smile, thanks for the tips 🙏
Number 4 tip depends on the style of music u play
For example u are an edm dj
In my country we use hip hop and Caribbean music and for how we play using for volume fader so transitions is a waste of time
Another thing about the crossfader is that it’s used for scratching! From cutting from primary track playing to the scratch sample or if you’re beat juggling, it’s more efficient to use the crossfader for that!
the jogwheel has a third function of searching through the track if you hold shift on the deck
Jog wheel is also used to search through a track.
Yep. Just like I'm surprised the Cue-button on his equipment apparently handles what is so commonly called 'PFL' (Pre-Fade Listening) on almost every dedicated mixing-table (for all reading this: that means NO controller, no USB-functionality, just a digital or analog mixer).
Confusing to me, but I know shit about controllers but more about analog mixers.
Already knew all of these concepts, but still watched and thoroughly enjoyed the whole video. 👍👍
I want to know can you record on the
Ernest Jones you can record in the DJ software but not on the hardware itself. On pioneers xdj systems you can record to a usb drive.
Anyone else triggered when he didn't beatmatch the two songs at nr. 5?
ive been mixing wrong for years, i thought the beats had to be in sync, but no i was wrong phil harris has made me see my mistake now
@@adrianrice142 your be surprised how many people still do. It’s ok matching beats. But the most important is where you drop you first beat. I always counted 4beats and 8bars.and if you remember that you will always be in phrase too.
Hit me Right away like a fucking punch in the gut
Thank you for this comment
Just follow the 32 bpb & u can't go wrong.. I always do a 32 count & drop on 33 but I mix viynl not cd
Ive been djing for a while and i just now learned about the key lock thing, thanks alot
number 5. you will be amazed on how Phil hit the play button and the ad started playing.
are we so far removed from a time when we saw skilled dj's behind the decks that we have to explain how a turntable works and the jog wheels relation to it
99.9% have never seen a DJ.
These newbies will never know just how heavy a milk crate of records really is. God my back hurts.
@@DjBlairQ lol i feel ya bro
@@leonpaul6198 so true ,when headliners at Tomorrowland spend more time sleeping on top of the monitors than behind the decks ...and this what they pay for ....there are just no words
Cheers Phil loved the big head part lol
Congrats on 100k brotha
Only in the DJ community can outsiders be called “regular people...” 🤣 carry on.
i noticed you have a lot of misinformation about the crossfader in your videos. while i DO agree that DJ's use the main faders to have better control over the volume on the corresponding track, the crossfader never puts your volume at 50%/50% by having it in the middle. otherwise dj's would never leave the crossfader in the middle, they would probably straight up disable it or have the big brands make controllers without crossfaders. having the crossfader in the middle plays both decks at 100% volume each, nudging it left or right reduces the volume from the opposite track (and the opposite track is the only side that has its volume effected).
and during your example, you had the crossfader in the middle, and guess what... the tracks did not play at 50% volume each. why? because it doesn't work that way, despite the claim you were making.
with that said, yes the pros do use the main faders as opposed to the crossfader because you want individual control over the volume of each side. as opposed to the crossfader cutting volume from only one side at a time.
DJ's who use it for scratching use it to cut volume from one side after all. because that's its only functionality, to cut volume from a single track (usually the side they are scratching from is being cut because it sounds bad if you have the crossfader in the middle, with both sides playing at full volume while doing this).
Hi Phil, I lost interest in DJ'ing around 2000 when it was all going formula, but I am starting to get interested in having another go thanks to your videos!
The equipment and what is possible now blows my mind. It seems like only yesterday I was having to keep tapping play/pause to match and how posh it felt to have a CD player that had a countdown timer..
Christmas is coming and I am thinking of treating myself to a controller. The preferred list in order is the Numark platinum, DDJ400 (if they are available) and the Hercules offering you recently reviewed.
Is there any chance you could do a comparison of those with more of a view on connectivity options and major differences in software? Does either software allow use of streaming services now? Does serato allow import/export of cue points? options for recording your practice sessions etc..
Thanks again for your vids, from an old dog trying to learn new tricks..
If you use a basic/scratch or controller or mixer that only has Highs and Low Knobs you want to use the crossfader to transition from one record or the other
if you're already using the crossfader you gonna set it's curve so it's way less stipper.... this will let you mix with 100% volume most of the cross.
That was brilliant. The volume stuff man I'm new to this.
Definitely keeping these tips in mind
Excellent tutorial! Thanks for the video!
On a side note, you’re looking great and fit Phil! Keep up the great videos!
You forgot to apply tip #1 when you demonstrated tip #5 which was not entirely true. Not every song is like this.
Very Concise & Imformative video! Love jt.
Best tips on youtube!
I was just waiting for this video😇😇
Disco isn't my cup of tea. But this information could help me sleep peacefully.
This guy really knows the good points. Subscribed and liked. He has no soul tho...
Thanks for your amazing tutorials mate.Your just a great dj"
You are just absolutely incredible! I love you!!!
Didn't really get into the EQ and why turntablists uses the crossfader to have a manual gate on their scratching. Also No. The intro's and outro's aren't the same length nor do they always consist of a drum loop. Producers tend to make it easier for DJ's by having it be a drum loop in most cases but this can be a phrase of 8 or 16 bars, or even 2 phrases of 16 bars for those long techno tracks.
This is one of the most helpful videos I've ever seen (although the enlarged head effect was highly disturbing.) Aside from that you've earned a subscriber.
Good video. I have had drama's with people wanting to take a picture with me in the DJ booth not understanding that those jogwheels will stop the song.
Did anyone else notice phils head get bigger towards the end. Looks like most EDM DJ's I've seen towards the end of their sets and it ain't cos of what I'm poppin. Great video Phil. Thanks for making it interesting
lol, I've found Tiesto's tracks work well with that intro/outro trick.
Daft Punk also has a lot that work really well together.
Definitely keeping these tips in mind
Pretty much all trance tracks have that too. I thought it was a stylistic thing but it makes sense that it also makes it easier for the DJ to mix.
I knew all this however this is super informative to people who want to get started so if you have a controller and don’t know how to use it I’d suggest watching some more of these videos
You didn't mention that quality gets way worse with Key Lock/ mastertempo enabled. Its better to have it turned off and only turn on in some cases like when making huge bpm difference with transition. Its also way better when you pitch song a little and actually hear the difference. Fck key lock
thanks, im becoming your new fans from malaysia..thanks
Bruh.... thanks for the keylock tip! I had no idea 🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️
We know everything because youtube tells us
This video is perfect
This is nice, what i like the most is the function of the jog wheel hehe
3:52, i think that's not true... when you put the crossfader in the middle, both of the volumes are at 100%, otherwise it would mean that each time you have your crossfader in the middle, you'd be playing at 50%
Love the hand gestures (devil horns). 😂
i hate waiting the outro for starting following song. motst of time it's boring parts, even when one plays outro and other intro. plus in means that you pllay the entiere 6'30 song, whitch is very long and not dynamic enough to keep the audience awake.
You are my teacher, I call you master Phil. I've learnt a lot from you sir, thank you
That was cool towards the end.
Sooo many people ask me what the hell I’m doing....now I know where to send them 😂
I had been wondering about point number 4, I didn't know wether it was better to use the crossfaders or the volume fader ! 😂Thanks!
You can use anyone bro
I use cross fader for scratching and volume fader for mixing
Since I hardly ever scratch I actually have my crossfader disabled and just use the upfaders.
@@jamesoutlaw4459 Nice
5:21 great Lord of the buffed gingerbread beards.... Now you have shown how its done. Always used the crossfader...never seemed right...
Really cool. That last mix one of those tracks was a tiny bit out
Oh wow, Intro and outro the same. didn't know about that
Not always the exact same length 😉
This is awesome
Thats a good point !
Man I really loved the 5th tip. What are the names of the two songs that you used in the last tip"
Deorro - Yee
Deorro & Uberjak'd - When the Funk Drops (feat. Far East Movement)
@@isaiahxaves Thank you so much mate.I appreciate that.
Can you give some tips to play psytrance (progressive and hi tech), I struggle knowing when to transition because the intro and outro have different length
Learnt a bit on this video that I was completely doing wrong as a complete novice.thats sorted. The cue headphone volume out. Cheers Phil.
He didn't mention turning up the headphone volume level. Basic I know, but when you are doing basic vids round out the basic facts. Informative just the same
@@cookronan cheers Sean
1:06 no thats not stop why there are two wheel one for the scrach and one for the music
LOL
I often find if you keep a beat for 16 - 34 bars the song transitioning if the same genre will work
hello DJ.. i want to ask something.. if people deaf can do learn/ training to dj operating ? let me know please..
i wish i could do this but im not good music wise
Congrats on 100k🔥
Wow idol teach me!
That Sir ,was not trivial enough
Yes also one plus one o two
Damn Philip u re a teacher , perfect explanation
Hey phil what controller do you use?
I been known that 😂
95% 😂😂😂. This guys just makes shit up
Bruh no hard feelings for negative comments .
It's ok keep going
People will always mock,but don't give up.😎😎
7:32 😂😂😂
amazing
@DjPhilHarris.. omg are you serious 😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳 let me know what I need to do thank you in advanced.
Funny how this guy every thing he teaches is at a 128 bpm! Its not hard at all to mix the same bpm as an instrumental basically
The theory is the same no matter if it's hard house @ 145bpm or soul at 70bpm. you just need to understand 4, 8, 16, 32 bars and mix track around the same BPM. easy realy👍
@@Se7en983 Except that after half an hour of 1 bpm 95% of crowds will get bored and you'll need to vary bpm's. With your 'easy' skillset, how u doin' that now?
On this equipment you ain't mixing, your just pushing buttons 😂
@@nikolasswift1709 Then tell me what kind of equipment qualifies as "mixing"?
@@rubentje555 what im saying is that technology has taken alot of skill out of it, given that it tells you the bpm so easy just to set it same as, then press play, jog into position and away you go. Granted there are some very skilled guys and girls out there, but sadly most are just button pushers that would probably be lost on an old set of decks and a two channel mixer, or maybe im just old 😂
If only youtube was around 30 years ago 🤣🤣🤣
Is this the DDj 800?
I love your Dance sir 🤣🔥🙏❤
What if you knew all of these?
Review I suppose! Well explained!
YESsS I KNEW IT
What is the title of the song please?
superb tutorial! 🔥🔥🔥
We will have it completed comes up with this is a button for something that I hate that
nice dj
So if there's a standard duration for intros and outros to some degree, what is it? 8 bars?
It depends; usually it is 16, but sometimes 8 or 32, depending on the genre/mix. Extended mixes almost always 16-32.
@@herritymusick1758 Wonderful. Big thanks! 👊
@@mcpeko You got it, homie! Kep spinnin'!
This stuff is way too basic man, even beginners know this
So, it was always true. DJs are literally just pushing play and changing volumes to switch to another song. That's it. The stereotype is real.
Apart of the fact, that the tracks on your last example were absolutely not in line... 🥺
Me being a beginner dj on vinyl like. Whats dis?
you're offbeat the entire time in the transition at the end
i think he knows lmfao its just an example
Tried doing that on vinyl bet you can’t do it
@@TheGemini001 I have performed with vinyl and can beatmatch on it, so actually, I can.
@@0505sandr Thank you for the reply I really appreciate the video I have a control Deck but I really miss my turn tables and I from the old school back in the 80s in Chicago there was no computers it was all vinyl if you understand where I’m coming from I just wish to bring back vinyl
@@TheGemini001 there are places that still sell vinyl.
Online and a few physical stores but yes there there
You know being a dj doesn't mean you are a dj only in club. Many parties i saw dj had no clue that is a party not a club. So people need to eat people wants to dans with their partners on slow songs and other things like this.
So, Intro and Outro regularly are 32 beats?
Yes. Intros are usually 8 bars. Some may be shorter. Depends on the style & production of the music itself.
These days, yeah, very much so. Dance music used to be so original and the DJs really had to know there vinyl tracks, even down to watching the different shades of black were on the record itself, a bit like looking at the waveform. Now it's press and go.
Double beats mate....
I don't have a key lock:(
Its called master tempo on mine.
The first 1 is only for tuch capasitive jog weals as aposed to mecanical
DJ; 5% scratch GUARANTEED 😁
Off beat mixing
Regular people? LOL @ this title
This is much more than a 101. This is,... 🤔 "What is deejaying"
