I didn’t know it wasn’t worth it for me until I left lol. I was sad to leave New York when my fiancés job took us to Chicago but in terms of quality of life it’s insane. I spent years convincing myself I loved a 475sq ft 4th floor walk up bc I loved the city. We now pay less than half of what we were paying with most of the things I loved about NY. When I miss it I hop on a quick flight but I can’t imagine going back to that cost of living. I’ve gotten to use to expendable income 😂
I felt the city individualism. My Mom grew up in DC, and growing up whenever we’d drive past an unhoused person, she’d tell me to not give them ANYTHING and that they were “acting”. It’s like the bigger the place, the *less* you pay attention to your surroundings (in regards to your fellow person).

I understand most are mentally ill but all I can say is I hope they get the help they need. The homelessness crisis is created by the government and closing our mental institutions and creating a healthcare system that puts profits first. The gov needs to fix this problem. My $5 can only go so far.
This was really thoughtfully explained. I’ve definitely held romantic views of New York but (living in LA) I’ve come to resent how expensive and unlivable the major US cities are. They expect you to pay so much but offer so little. Having moved back recently from Tokyo where I had a 2 bed 2 bath 3-story house downtown for $1600, it’s been a shock.

I moved to New York in the late 90s, when it had that sex in the city feel. I've sinced moved, however I visited last year just an hour in from landing to the hotel to getting food with lift rides, I spent almost $400.

I loved in NYC for undergrad, and the worst parts of the city are the transplants. They go there to become cultured, can be the most self-centered, and they drive the price up.
the biggest thing is its hard to find a smaller place that doesn't require a car that you also have community in. The US has so much car infrastructure. things are getting better, but there's a long way to go
People not from Cleveland act like it is the most dangerous and dysfunctional place in America, but it turns out there are actually a lot of advantages to living in a somewhat depopulated formerly large city like cost of living and housing. This city is deceptively more conservative than advertised. Never felt more disposable on a daily basis as a human being, not so much from neighbors as much as from work, housing, and the city services that are supposed to protect you against the worst of those two things
I grew up in Michigan and live in the Bronx! My brother in Michigan has a house for 800$ and I’m like lol that’s what most people pay for a room in nyc! But I do feel what you’re saying a lot of it comes down to priorities! Also to add I use to live in Columbus Ohio and really did like it!!
I moved to NYC in 1998, then left in 2003, then returned in 2006 only to leave again in 2012. The city isn't the same as it was back in 1998. I barely recognize it anymore. Now I live abroad and see it happening here 😢 Globalization Gentrification 😢
The guarantor thing is what has barred me from finding a place here for two years, I currently live in essentially a dorm room (not specifying where just for safety) but yeah, my parents refused to guarantor anything the moment I turned 18 and I also live the poor artist lifestyle, as do many people here. Where I am originally from, if one person you lived with made the rent, or all of you combined did, it was a go. Nope, in NYC, either all of you make the 40x rent or all of you have a guarantor, they don't f*ck around and it makes it hard to find anything.
Born and raised in NYC. Lucky I was accepted into NYCHA after living in a shelter. I then received a new two bedroom for 1k a month. Problem is I’ll probably be kicked out after my lease is over next year due my income exceeding the income cap. So… back to the shelter me and my kid go. Hopefully that doesn’t happen.

You make me wish I was younger. I lived in Prague for a while, and then moved back to Los Angeles in 1996. I just wish my elder butt was agile enough to move around again and have the ability to work. But I am lucky that I am able to stay in L.A. , with housing assistance, even if it was a tremendous struggle at first. The drawbacks are that I don’t feel a sense of community here, (primarily due to my lack of funds, I literally have no money to go out) so I am pretty much a hermit with the exception of some family and one friend. I know there are social alternatives, but I am old, nonbinary, and queer, within a fairly conservative community. Tbh, reaching out to any community in a huge metropolis is daunting

@@PrinceShakurRUclips yess ! definitely do grad school here. idk much about the art programs but you can use campus france to search for them (also in english). i did my masters here in 2021, it was a one year program and i paid 430 euros in tuition + a great experience and now i'm working, can't beat that. for the areas i'd say 13th, 11th, 18th, 19th, and 20th all pretty affordable and lively art scenes
1100 is amazing rent for safe area in NYC. Even for Washington DC, Boston, or San Fran. In cities, the neighborhood and location is sometimes more important than the apartment itself. No windows is kind of extreme though lol

Coming back to this, I want to leave Ohio myself one day. As an Ohio native,I have outgrown it here since i was like seventeen. One of my goals is to visit NYC, or even live on the East Coast. A friend of mine moved there at 18 right after high school with no money and no plans to go to college. She’s still there 8 years later and has built a life for herself. She had a few years of struggle and questionable living situations, didn’t have parents to help, but eventually found her footing. Kind of an insane path though, my hat goes off to her for her bravery.

I grew up in NYC (I'm 52 now). Housing has ALWAYS been a complete sh*t show. I finally left in my early 30s and moved to FL and then to GA. 10 yrs later I moved back to NY (stayed with my mom for just under 2 yrs) and then moved to NJ. NJ was good up until the last 2 yrs. Prices have skyrocketed since covid because so many people from NYC have moved here. You made the right decision. NYC is great for an extended stay to get the experience but to live there long term will drain your pockets and your mental health. Now you have me curious, where in OH do you live? NJ rents are unaffordable. I can move to OH or leave the country altogether but I can't keep paying almost $2K for a 1 bdrm. It's too much!!!

I so appreciate this video and when you dropped the bombshell that your roommates when you first moved were white - well that changes everything !!!! This city is incredibly segregated - and neighborhoods that used to be affordable are no longer . It’s the quality of life here . The thing is so many native new yorkers can’t stay here because they can’t afford to because there is some one willing to pay anything to be here and that’s a problem . The character the vibes of the city is not the same and that’s why in this city you can easily have folks in their 30s with Roomates because having your own space is unlikely
To each their own. I’m not a city person. I visit friends in a nearby city and I have fun, but could never live there. Too many American cities are dirty, loud, and expensive. I love that there is more diversity and eclectic stuff going on, but I love that I live in a smaller area that actually is quiet at night, and I pay a third of what my friend paid in rent.
I'm from Indy. I always had that dream of escaping my, then precieved, sleepy Midwest town and moving to New York. I ended up staying here and getting a good job. Eventually I moved downtown and honestly I love it. A lot of things that I thought I could only have in New York I have here now. I walk to the grocery store, I can walk to the doctor go to the gym or to get a haircut. It's crazy how life can bring you around full circle in different ways.

Just a psa. New york state law requires that landlords charge no more than $20 for a background check and credit check of applicants. AND if you can provide that information yourself, that fee must be waived. Curious to know what reasons landlords will give regarding these charges. If it's in writing, I would bring it up with tenant advocacy groups/NYS attorneys office. ☺️
I’m from Columbus! So my sister moved to New York years ago, like 11-ish or so, spent a year there and came back to Ohio. She was tired of that ridiculous rent lol. I couldn’t believe all she had to go through to get an apartment there.

I'm turning 17 and plan on moving there when I'm 18. I already started saving and I've done a ton of research. I plan on living in a cheaper area like Queens and having roommates. Been my dream to live in nyc since i was a small child im willing to make certain sacrifices and live in a shoe box to make That happen
@@richardgrobertson5293 I went on a bunch of apartment shopping apps/websites and there's apartments in Queens, Brooklyn, and the Bronx for like 1800-2k with more space and that rent can easily be split between roommates. Obviously OVERALL anywhere in NYC is expensive compared to anywhere else in the world but queens and Brooklyn is way more doable than somewhere like Manhattan where a 1 bedroom is like 4k

People have to do what’s best for them. I hate that they are making the city so inaccessible for those who aren’t wealthy. I live in Los Angeles and make decent money and I would love to move to New York. It isn’t the most financially feasible right now but I visit at least twice a year to live my NYC dream.
The aspect which makes New York so much costlier than other places is the cost of housing. Otherwise, the costs of a night out on the town (or even a day out on the town) that you were listing are comparable to even a Midwest city like Columbus Ohio where I live. I ate lunch (take-out) a few days ago at a Greek restaurant and ordered a Chipotle-style bowl to go with a small juice carton and it came to between $12 and $13 dollars. It wasn't anything fancy, just a bowl of meat, rice and veggies, similar to Chipotle.
As someone who is a black queer man in my early 30s, I moved to nyc straight out of highschool and stay for over 12 years. I wanted to live that movie show life. And I did!!! lol But that New York is no longer unfortunately. The culture which was created by the natives and poor artist transplants is gone. I know some ppl want to say “oh I live in NYC”. But it’s not worth it. New younger cities are on the rise and if I was younger I would consider going to one of those cities where you actually have a chance.
I moved to Ny in 2010. It was fun but I’m glad I’m out. The only reason I’d go back now is just the options for entertainment and fun. There’s much more live music there than in most cities
Wow! The housing situation in NYC IS worse than in L.A. We have very few third places here, though. Greedy capitalism has worked this place over. City services are a sad joke. It’s so hard dealing with the local bureaucracy, because it’s a mess. I lucked out with being low income and getting assisted housing when I did. Nowadays if a person gets a section 8 housing voucher, apartments aren’t available. They have wait lists. Everywhere in CA. It can give a desperate person a sense of false hope. Oh, and some section 8 rentals have lotteries. It’s so Hunger Games
I've lived in small towns and big cities, I find big cities better. As a regular person that works a quotidien job, NYC is the Bomb! Yes, you do have to have a "hook up" on the housing front and that will take a minute to develop the contacts with regular NY's that will give you tips, but it will happen if you are committed. All big cities are not created equally: there is no City like New York City, we simply have it all, all the time! You don't git tired or bored because you simply don't have to rush to do stuff, take your time, it's here and waiting when you're ready. Yes, something has to be done in NYC about the truly affordable housing for the majority of people making less than $100k per; housing as an investment has to be restricted. Although, a whole lot of that high-end housing in NYC is not full by any means, and is being pawned off to the subsidized market, which was necessitated when the criminal Zero percent interest rate on loans to the Oligarchy and their supplicants allowed these buildings to stay empty without penalty. This is not a 'capitalism' problem, this is a criminality problem, the two are not interchangeable. It's not about which economic system you have, it's about the ethics and character of the people that lead (America currently being led by "Genocide Joe", nuff said). The White West has always had an aggressive, conquistador attitude toward the world and that breeds personal hubris and corruption. As the Chinese take center stage and provide options for Modernity, let's see how their "Win-win" ethics will impact the destructive, warlike posture of the regular people in the declining White West.
Been there done that. NYC was not like that in the 80's when I moved there, Even early 90's. Anything was possible. Starting changing in the mid 90's and has gotten worse ever since. I’m from Harlem and went to university in Cincinnati, Ohio. Moving back to NYC after living in Ohio was depressing 😂 My qualify of life in Cincinnati was top tier. I now live in Washington, DC. I like it here but I plan on moving back to Cincinnati. My family live in NYC bubble and have no idea about life outside of the city. Cleveland is completely different than Cincinnati
I have lived in NYC all of my life...and I'm most likely older than anyone of your listeners. My first studio apartment back in 1985 was a $275 rental. My next apartment was a very small one bedroom $600 rental, which I stayed in for 33 years. It was a fifth floor walk up...and I lived on the fifth floor. It was also a rent stabilized building. When I moved in 2022...my rent was only $1063! That was damn good! When I moved out, I purchased an affordable co-op in a very gentrified neighborhood. I was on a waiting list for 12 years. So, I am saying all of this because it can be done. And I know why it's harder than ever to live in NYC...it mainly because of the ruling class who can takeover a city at a whim! Gentrification is horrible...it's a form of erasure!
I went to university in the states. Worse descission I've ever made. Lol I was enrolled in a uni in the state of Louisiana. I won't give names. But I was working in a restaurant. I was friends with everyone.they loved my British accent. Lol one day this one girl named Bridgette, that was my best friend at work. (She was gay , and black and so funny and sweet. I loved her so much. ) she wasn't at work. I asked the manager where she was. She said "I fired that , n word b!tch. " My chin dropped to the ground. I was shocked she was fired but more shocked at the word she used. I spilt the beans. I told every black person there what she had said. To make a long story short(too late) it went to court. I testified. And nothing happened. The next evening , I had people burn a cross in my front yard. With a mob calling my name and demanding I come out. I slipped out the back and ran to a neighbor's house. Called the police. And the police never came. I was evicted by my landlord the next day. This was in the 1980s. I transferred to NYU.

I go to Harlem nights during the week the drinks are less then $10 there are some cheap spots in ny when it comes to stores and bars the Bronx has the cheapest clothing stores in the city u can get cloths that look expensive but its cheap so me making less then 40 k a year and not paying rent my money life is good and im on my way to moving to a cheaper state

She’s not wrong. Lots of scammers out there and many don’t even want help. I’ve offered food before and gotten yelled at and demanded money instead. I understand most are mentally ill but all I can say is I hope they get the help they need. The homelessness crisis is created by the government and closing our mental institutions and creating a healthcare system that puts profits first. The gov needs to fix this problem. My $5 can only go so far.

This was really thoughtfully explained. I’ve definitely held romantic views of New York but (living in LA) I’ve come to resent how expensive and unlivable the major US cities are. They expect you to pay so much but offer so little. Having moved back recently from Tokyo where I had a 2 bed 2 bath 3-story house downtown for $1600, it’s been a shock.

I moved to New York in the late 90s, when it had that sex in the city feel. I've sinced moved, however I visited last year just an hour in from landing to the hotel to getting food with lift rides, I spent almost $400.
I spent about 60.00 from 42 street to upper manhattan. It was so upsetting.

I loved in NYC for undergrad, and the worst parts of the city are the transplants. They go there to become cultured, can be the most self-centered, and they drive the price up.
the biggest thing is its hard to find a smaller place that doesn't require a car that you also have community in. The US has so much car infrastructure. things are getting better, but there's a long way to go
People not from Cleveland act like it is the most dangerous and dysfunctional place in America, but it turns out there are actually a lot of advantages to living in a somewhat depopulated formerly large city like cost of living and housing. Cleveland sucks a lot but absolutely not for the reasons non Clevelanders think
This city is deceptively more conservative than advertised. Never felt more disposable on a daily basis as a human being, not so much from neighbors as much as from work, housing, and the city services that are supposed to protect you against the worst of those two things

I moved to NYC in 1998, then left in 2003, then returned in 2006 only to leave again in 2012. The city isn't the same as it was back in 1998. I barely recognize it anymore. Now I live abroad and see it happening here 😢 Globalization Gentrification 😢

The guarantor thing is what has barred me from finding a place here for two years, I currently live in essentially a dorm room (not specifying where just for safety) but yeah, my parents refused to guarantor anything the moment I turned 18 and I also live the poor artist lifestyle, as do many people here. Where I am originally from, if one person you lived with made the rent, or all of you combined did, it was a go. Nope, in NYC, either all of you make the 40x rent or all of you have a guarantor, they don't f*ck around and it makes it hard to find anything.
Born and raised in NYC. Lucky I was accepted into NYCHA after living in a shelter. I then received a new two bedroom for 1k a month. Problem is I’ll probably be kicked out after my lease is over next year due my income exceeding the income cap. So… back to the shelter me and my kid go. Hopefully that doesn’t happen.
I believe regarding nycha even if your income increases they will just increase your rent not evict you. You should check with management.

You make me wish I was younger. I lived in Prague for a while, and then moved back to Los Angeles in 1996. I just wish my elder butt was agile enough to move around again and have the ability to work. But I am lucky that I am able to stay in L.A. , with housing assistance, even if it was a tremendous struggle at first. The drawbacks are that I don’t feel a sense of community here, (primarily due to my lack of funds, I literally have no money to go out) so I am pretty much a hermit with the exception of some family and one friend. I know there are social alternatives, but I am old, nonbinary, and queer, within a fairly conservative community. Tbh, reaching out to any community in a huge metropolis is daunting

@@PrinceShakurRUclips yess ! definitely do grad school here. idk much about the art programs but you can use campus france to search for them (also in english). i did my masters here in 2021, it was a one year program and i paid 430 euros in tuition + a great experience and now i'm working, can't beat that. for the areas i'd say 13th, 11th, 18th, 19th, and 20th all pretty affordable and lively art scenes

1100 is amazing rent for safe area in NYC. Even for Washington DC, Boston, or San Fran. In cities, the neighborhood and location is sometimes more important than the apartment itself. No windows is kind of extreme though lol

Coming back to this, I want to leave Ohio myself one day. As an Ohio native,I have outgrown it here since i was like seventeen. One of my goals is to visit NYC, or even live on the East Coast. I just want to be in a different environment because of what I studied and went to school for. I can see why people are leaving NYC, since it has been dangerous in recent times lol.

A friend of mine moved there at 18 right after high school with no money and no plans to go to college. She’s still there 8 years later and has built a life for herself. She had a few years of struggle and questionable living situations, didn’t have parents to help, but eventually found her footing. Kind of an insane path though, my hat goes off to her for her bravery.
Enjoying New York starts with already having $$$. Wearing yourself ragged for food and shelter will drain you of energy to enjoy anything.

I grew up in NYC (I'm 52 now). Housing has ALWAYS been a complete sh*t show. I finally left in my early 30s and moved to FL and then to GA. 10 yrs later I moved back to NY (stayed with my mom for just under 2 yrs) and then moved to NJ. NJ was good up until the last 2 yrs. Prices have skyrocketed since covid because so many people from NYC have moved here. You made the right decision. NYC is great for an extended stay to get the experience but to live there long term will drain your pockets and your mental health. Now you have me curious, where in OH do you live? NJ rents are unaffordable. I can move to OH or leave the country altogether but I can't keep paying almost $2K for a 1 bdrm. It's too much!!!

To each their own. I’m not a city person. I visit friends in a nearby city and I have fun, but could never live there. Too many American cities are dirty, loud, and expensive. I love that there is more diversity and eclectic stuff going on, but I love that I live in a smaller area that actually is quiet at night, and I pay a third of what my friend paid in rent.

Just a psa. New york state law requires that landlords charge no more than $20 for a background check and credit check of applicants. AND if you can provide that information yourself, that fee must be waived. Curious to know what reasons landlords will give regarding these charges. If it's in writing, I would bring it up with tenant advocacy groups/NYS attorneys office. ☺️
I’m from Columbus! So my sister moved to New York years ago, like 11-ish or so, spent a year there and came back to Ohio. She was tired of that ridiculous rent lol. I couldn’t believe all she had to go through to get an apartment there.

Obviously OVERALL anywhere in NYC is expensive compared to anywhere else in the world but queens and Brooklyn is way more doable than somewhere like Manhattan where a 1 bedroom is like 4k

The aspect which makes New York so much costlier than other places is the cost of housing. Otherwise, the costs of a night out on the town (or even a day out on the town) that you were listing are comparable to even a Midwest city like Columbus Ohio where I live. I ate lunch (take-out) a few days ago at a Greek restaurant and ordered a Chipotle-style bowl to go with a small juice carton and it came to between $12 and $13 dollars. It wasn't anything fancy, just a bowl of meat, rice and veggies, similar to Chipotle.

As someone who is a black queer man in my early 30s, I moved to nyc straight out of highschool and stay for over 12 years. I wanted to live that movie show life. And I did!!! lol But that New York is no longer unfortunately. The culture which was created by the natives and poor artist transplants is gone.
I know some ppl want to say “oh I live in NYC”. But it’s not worth it. New younger cities are on the rise and if I was younger I would consider going to one of those cities where you actually have a chance.

Wow! The housing situation in NYC IS worse than in L.A. We have very few third places here, though. Greedy capitalism has worked this place over. City services are a sad joke. It’s so hard dealing with the local bureaucracy, because it’s a mess. I lucked out with being low income and getting assisted housing when I did. Nowadays if a person gets a section 8 housing voucher, apartments aren’t available. They have wait lists. Everywhere in CA. It can give a desperate person a sense of false hope. Oh, and some section 8 rentals have lotteries. It’s so Hunger Games
I've lived in small towns and big cities, I find big cities better. As a regular person that works a quotidien job, NYC is the Bomb! Yes, you do have to have a "hook up" on the housing front and that will take a minute to develop the contacts with regular NY's that will give you tips, but it will happen if you are committed. All big cities are not created equally: there is no City like New York City, we simply have it all, all the time! You don't git tired or bored because you simply don't have to rush to do stuff, take your time, it's here and waiting when you're ready. Yes, something has to be done in NYC about the truly affordable housing for the majority of people making less than $100k per; housing as an investment has to be restricted. Although, a whole lot of that high-end housing in NYC is not full by any means, and is being pawned off to the subsidized market, which was necessitated when the criminal Zero percent interest rate on loans to the Oligarchy and their supplicants allowed these buildings to stay empty without penalty. This is not a 'capitalism' problem, this is a criminality problem, the two are not interchangeable. It's not about which economic system you have, it's about the ethics and character of the people that lead (America currently being led by "Genocide Joe", nuff said). The White West has always had an aggressive, conquistador attitude toward the world and that breeds personal hubris and corruption. As the Chinese take center stage and provide options for Modernity, let's see how their "Win-win" ethics will impact the destructive, warlike posture of the regular people in the declining White West.

Been there done that. NYC was not like that in the 80's when I moved there, Even early 90's. Anything was possible. Starting changing in the mid 90's and has gotten worse ever since. The old idea of moving to NYC and discovering yourself and the city is almost an unreachable joke! NYC is only for the rich and fortunate. Better to visit friends and leave to a REAL place to call home. I would never live there again. Love the old NYC not the current.

My qualify of life in Cincinnati was top tier. I now live in Washington, DC. I like it here but I plan on moving back to Cincinnati. My family live in NYC bubble and have no idea about life outside of the city. Cleveland is completely different than Cincinnati

I have lived in NYC all of my life...and I'm most likely older than anyone of your listeners. My first studio apartment back in 1985 was a $275 rental. My next apartment was a very small one bedroom $600 rental, which I stayed in for 33 years. It was a fifth floor walk up...and I lived on the fifth floor. It was also a rent stabilized building. When I moved in 2022...my rent was only $1063! That was damn good! When I moved out, I purchased an affordable co-op in a very gentrified neighborhood. I was on a waiting list for 12 years. So, I am saying all of this because it can be done. And I know why it's harder than ever to live in NYC...it mainly because of the ruling class who can takeover a city at a whim! Gentrification is horrible...it's a form of erasure!

I went to university in the states. Worse descission I've ever made. Lol I was enrolled in a uni in the state of Louisiana. I won't give names. But I was working in a restaurant. I was friends with everyone.they loved my British accent. Lol one day this one girl named Bridgette, that was my best friend at work. (She was gay , and black and so funny and sweet. I loved her so much. ) she wasn't at work. I asked the manager where she was. She said "I fired that , n word b!tch. " My chin dropped to the ground. I was shocked she was fired but more shocked at the word she used. I spilt the beans. I told every black person there what she had said. To make a long story short(too late) it went to court. I testified. And nothing happened. The next evening , I had people burn a cross in my front yard. With a mob calling my name and demanding I come out. I slipped out the back and ran to a neighbor's house. Called the police. And the police never came. I was evicted by my landlord the next day. This was in the 1980s. I transferred to NYU.

Holy shit. 500 a month? Where I live, which is a Midwestern City....in "affordable" housing...the rent is about 1500. It's an apartment. It's two bedroom but the fact that it is supposed to be affordable is...Ohio you say? Hmm.

I live in a non gentrified community so nyc is affordable for me. 🤷🏿♀️ and I'm a native New Yorker so no where else feels like home to me.

I help people get approved for housing when the have evictions on the record, we won’t even help people in NY, the requirements for approval are ridiculous! I really don’t understand why anyone wants to live there
