This has nothing to do with cabinets, but I just tried your hawk and finishing trowel method on some drywall repairs in my house. HOLY MOLY Game changer! I suck with drywall but I used to be a concrete finisher so I have a hawk and a couple trowels so I gave it a whirl. So much easier to get a smooth finish and so much less sanding. Thank You for all the USEFUL tips

The placement of the handle mounting holes drilled by hand in the "template" cabinet door will be more accurate on the front of the door, than on the back. This is because the drill will not have been held perfectly perpendicular to the door when drilling those holes. So to properly transfer the desired hole pattern when making the jig, the laminate should definitely be held against the front of the template door and be drilled through from the back of the door. (When using the jig, it should of course be held against the front of a door, and the door drilled through from the front.)

    Classic. Nice, Ben!
I've been accumulating supplies for a bath and kitchen remodel. I did the smaller bath last year as a trial run. Turned out well, but the Kreg jig does look like a timesaver over mounting the oak doors I made in a mill and accurately drilling them out (my machinist friend is ultra precise).

Please appreciate the engineering marvel of these hinges. It is a second to snap them on and off, yet they hold the door and sustain thousands of door openings without any issue.
They look straightforward first, but it needs lots of work to come up with this design.

We got a fixer upper home and the cabinet boxes were in great shape but the actual doors had this really weird drywall mud texture that the previous "artistic" type owner had applied to the kitchen doors! (Imagine cake icing tips with gold colored paint on the tips of the drywall) ! Yeah, I'm serious! It was horrendous! Lol! Anyways I researched kitchen cabinet doors replacements. I was shocked at how incredibly expensive they are! Seriously even a basic shaker style mdf center kitchen door was around $80 dollars (US) on the cheap side!! After laughing at the ridiculous price I decided to go ahead and restore the doors myself. Believe it or not citris paint remover actually softened the drywall mud and I was able to scrape it off and the old paint. A little sanding and primer a painted them with advance benjamin moore paint and now they look brand new!! Even if I couldn't restore them I would and could build the doors a hell of a lot cheaper than the ridiculous price of $80 dollars a door for mdf!! Smh....

It’s cool that you showed how to make a jig. But I don’t even put the first one on without a jig. They’re not very expensive. For $13 you can get a pair that give you the holes for cabinet doors as well as drawers.

Not sure if it has been mentioned yet but most of those hinges types have Pozidriv screws. They look similar to the standard Philips but have a bit more to them. I had no idea until I won a Multi-Bit screwdriver that had Pozidriv bits and was told they were for cabinet hinges. It's like night and day since they are the proper bits for their screws.

I used this Kreg jig when I refinished 19 kitchen doors this summer. The jig was great … but was even better when I started running my vacuum while drilling the holes. Doing so resulted in less work for the bit and a better result. Also, as “narinwtf” said is his comment, you don’t have to unchuck your bit each time. The Kreg jig comes apart … but remember to use the jig to drill the 2 pilot holes first.

When building a door handle jig, don't use two separate pieces of wood for each side of the jig - they will never line up perfectly. Instead, use a thicker piece of wood with a dado cut down the middle. You can then glue or screw the template material into the slot.

    • @NormanRamsey
      @NormanRamsey 2 года назад

Yes! Also, the two pieces don’t have to meet at the corner! Just make sure your template/laminate/hardboard has two edges at 90 degrees to each other, then slot each edge into the groove on your piece of wood. The laminate itself gives you the 90 degrees, and you can leave a gap of an inch (that’s 25mm for you Ben) at the corner.

If you transferred the hinge locations with the doors hinge side to hinge side, and they weren't both the same distance from the top and bottom of the door, wouldn't it be wrong when you flip the new door over? I guess as long as they're pretty close to the same dimension, you can adjust it out?

As far as centering goes.. did you ever try douing this without a jig at first...1)take one old door with hinges removed and lay it down squarely on top of the new door to be bored... 2) then run the proper size fostner strait through the hinge hole of the old door boring it just until you begin boring a hole into the new door... 3)then undo clamps and remove the old door, 4) finally, attatch the jig which has the depth gauge on it and bore the hole in the new door to its proper depth.

As an American that works in trades and also does finish carpentry….. There are times, that will work using Metric measurements. Why, well; simple….EASIER to call out numbers, send in measurements and so on; than using imperial measurements. It’s true, and know others who do the same.
Also, ya know the medical profession here in states Use ALL METRIC MEASUREMENTS, ain’t that interesting 😉

There's a reason why those plastic inserts for the hinge screws are used. MDF just doesn't hold a screw for very long. Inserts are very inexpensive. If you really don't want to use inserts for some strange reason you can put a drop of wood glue into the drilled screw hole and that may (maybe) strengthen the MDF hold on the screw. Probably not, but maybe.

One issue with some imported hardware is the screws are metric, and if they are too long and need cutting to length, it can be a challenge. For Imperial screws, some of my electrical pliers have built in cutters for a #6 or a #8 screw, and when you unthread the screw from the pliers any "flash" is cleaned off. If anyone knows of a maker of pliers with built in bolt cutters that have metric threads, I'd love to know of them. I've had to thread on a nut, cut the bolt to length with an angle grinder, then unthread the nut to chase the threads. (not exactly a fast operation)

My GF is presently trying to collect money owed her from a cabinet maker who couldn't deliver what she ordered. It's been way over a year, two trips to small claims court and even though she was awarded the judgement against the cabinet maker, she still hasn't been able to get the remaining money owed her. Yes, she went with the low bid and the cabinet maker wasn't even a contractor. We suspect he's also an illegal alien. She has to hire a collection agency because the Marshall's office doesn't do any collections anymore.

Never use an impact to install cabinet hardware, might as well just use an automotive impact gun, they're both too aggressive for this application. And using a manual screwdriver is for kids. Use a drill, and turn the clutch way down so that it limits the amount of torque, and you'll never overdrive or strip a screw.

Name anything, that can be measured in metric, but not English units... you cant. Therefore, metric is the problem, because it was never needed in the first place.
