Duuuuuuude!! I always let my guard get passed just so I can get somebody into my half guard. But then I get stuck.... cuz they smash and pressure me. That underhook is key... then create distance and put in the butterfly... then set up the sweep. This, I realize, is what my professor does. He sweeps me all the time. And it's because he lets me pass his guard, he establishes the underhook, traps the arm and head, and inevitably sweeps me. Thanks for the breakdown and instruction. Can't wait to try this out on the mats tonight. :-)
We were working on butterfly sweeps last night! It was my third BJJ class. When we were rolling, I kept getting stuck in half guard. This is really helpful for a new guy. Thanks!
Haha I actually love the fact that you say bye to your students and stuff mid video. PRIORITIES MAN! They're in the right place! I've got a question but it's not about half guard though. I've been doing mma for about 10 years, but isolated jiu jitsu only for about a year and a half to two years. I find that a lot of the time even when i'm comfortable with who i'm rolling against I still find i feel like i'm just defending 90% of the time and when I attack it just seems inefficient - guard gets passed easily, subs escaped easily etc. I know i'm super early in the game, super early. But i'm not sure how to tighten up what i'm doing when I get minimal feedback? Trying to FEEL what I need to be doing, but yeah, it's tough when i'm not as confident as with my stand up stuff... Thanks again for the videos man!
Amazing move. My biggest struggle is always options when I have someone in my half-guard. This helps a lot. Also, thumbs up even before watching the video :)
Love your videos Chewie, wanted to show my little boy how to do this on me as he ends up in half guard a lot with me when we're having some fun rolling or just burning off some energy during lockdown, but couldn't remember how to show him properly because I haven't trained in grappling in years now, so that short vid was just perfect and will help me keep him engaged enough until I can get him into a bjj school. Karl.
I was going to give this video a thumbs up but since you told me what to do Chewey..........NO THUMB FOR YOU!!!!!! (nah I gave it a thumbs up, these videos are always awesome)
the shrimp to butterfly hook I find easier said then done. Those bjj scout videos (adam wardzinski) are helping me with the butterfly guard. But great video, helps me remember the details that are sometimes lost.
I want to first say thank you so much for making these videos. I have used them alot! Today was my first bjj class and I loved it. The next 2 classes that i can make it to a just "rolling" classes. Meaning people are just coming to roll. No instruction. I want to seem eager but I no so little that I think in a class of ONLY rolling I would be in the way. Go to rolling class or just wait until the next actual class? It is only a couple days after. Thanks alot
Could you do a video for nubes on what grips to and worry about with take downs, while someone is trying pass your guard and grips to try and grab that may help set up positions? Thanks Jesse Scriven
Hey chewie, one of things I've been wondering and especially after watching a lot of your half guard series videos, is what are some great moves to do in half guard from the top position. I only really know the knee slice pass and I was wondering if you have anything you specifically do to either pass half guard or even submit someone from half guard. A lot of times I can get the kimura from the top, but I feel I'm using too much strength to complete it and it's not a dependable technique. Great Video Btw.
Hey Chewy, love the channel. I have a question for you. My instructor is talking about giving me a blue belt in the next month or so and I don't feel like I am ready. I do train 4-5 sometimes even 6 days a week but it will have only been 7 months. Should I tell him I don't feel I deserve it enough or is that disrespectful? I trust him and he is a legitimate instructor. Is this imposter syndrome or is it actually too fast? I have read 18 months is more appropriate.
Hey man im only a BB but have been training 7 years im looking at starting a youtube channel but dont know how to start haha have any advice ? Thanks bro!
hi chewi! i train bjj for 5 years and im blue belt in GFTeam How can i stretch the intercostal muscles, and oblique muscles for my core? I injured those muscles several times in bjj and its are De-motivate me! >:(
Lifting weights (especially heavy compound lifts) is excellent for core strength and stability. If you're not into that for some reason you could look into body weight style exercises that target your core, or even do some form of Pilates/Yoga. You can easily find these exercises here on RUclips.

One of the things you have to develop with your game..... *LATER NICK*
Haha, I can't let my student go out without a goodbye! :P
Thanks for this video. Noob here and I'm getting caught up with holding on to the half guard (but not knowing what to do next). Will try it out.
