    The no DNR 4k83 was gorgeous! I was amazed at how well they did. Would really like to see the UHD but at the same time, I do enjoy being a purist and seeing the films as I remember them. It's been difficult over the years to watch the original trilogy after they have been added to and added to. I'm patiently awaiting 4k80 to complete my collection of unaltered originals. If you end up having the time, you should talk to everyone about the differences of the originals and the newest releases. If you care about it that much of course haha. So many people are unaware of all the addons over the years.

    I totally agree that A New Hope looks the best of the three. The shadows are unreal in that version-looks almost like it could’ve been filmed last year. It was pretty stunning to see what an upgrade these versions were to the blu ray. I’m pretty fond of the noise reduction. I feel it brings out the most detail possible. Loving these transfers! Also, you should give Episode III a shot if you have the time/budget. I thought it was a pretty stunning upgrade with incredible HDR

    This film used to be my favourite of the three films until the special editions. I can't bring myself to watch it anymore so I was super excited for 4K83 I just wish the colours weren't so faded. Still crossing my fingers for an official 4K transfer of the original unaltered trilogy... in the meantime there's always fan edits/transfers.

      @@SavageAirCinema to me, these colors are much more neutral. The 2011 Blu-Ray was really overly saturated, and I really don't like the skin colors of the humans. It may not be the greatest transfer that us out there, but I do like these transfer.

      Scott Tilden Have you been under a rock? Lucas doesn’t own anything from Lucasfilm anymore. And with Fox being sold to Disney, Disney owns everything from Fox now as well, which only included theatrically (from the main canon) the original six films (in addition to the Clone Wars film that made up the first few episodes). Stop assuming that Lucas still had absolute control over everything.

    From what I understand and have read'ed over the years The 2004 DVDs / 2011 Blu-Ray Discs / 2015 Blu-Ray Discs of The Original Trilogy had rushed color grading on those releases and on these newer 4K UHD Blu-Ray Disc releases the color grading is closer to what the films originally looked in 77 , 80 and 83 and what they looked liked back when the Special Editions came out in 1997.

I did purchase the Skywalker Saga back in December (a pre order from Best Buy) and I have seen the first two prequel films as well as all three original films. I will say the quality is better than the 4K streaming on Disney +. I think the quality is very impressive for the most part. I'm sure this has been covered in the comments already but just in case as I'm in a rush.. I'm 3:43 seconds so far in the video and the content so far keep talking about HDR being this revolutionary new colour. It is nothing to do with HDR what you're seeing and pointing out is COLOUR grade!!! The new Grade is simply far closer to the original theatrical versions. The 2011 blu ray colour timing/grade is a result of Lucasfilm pushing the grade and saturation up inch by inch over 30 years and the "New" 4K sweep is more like Disney stepping in and snapping back the settings to 1983. I have the Laserdisc of these and they seem so similar in colour and that of the 1080p 4K83 project. HDTV test proved that HDR on these transfers is shameful low peaking around 400nits and 80% of the image is only 100nits SDR content. So this fabulous new HDR is as good as the 100nits performance of my 1990 Laserdisc transfers NOT HDR10. This is not a bash, if I come over as a tit i apologise and remain subscribed and looking forward to more great videos 👍😎

      Martyn Ottley no you’re right. I was about to say the same thing. If you want to compare the impact the HDR has had compare the 4K disc to the Blu Ray that comes with the 4K not the mess that is the 2011 Blu Rays. Makes no sense and it’s comparing Apples & Oranges.

I figure this may be the last physical release the series gets, best to get them while they are still available and (vaguely) affordable. I bought them day of release at $30 a pop at Target. The following Sunday, Target did the buy 2 get one free deal. Had I waited one week, I’d saved $30. There really is not much an incentive to get films the day of release for 4K like there used to be when blu-ray was in its heyday. Movies would be on sale the day of release. Now, it’s just to wait for a sale on the 4K to save money. Especially when Best Buy does those 50% off Disney steel book deals. Though those sales still haven’t tempted me to make upgrades from blu-ray on my old Disney or Pixar classics.

    Compared 4K83 and this release a few nights ago. 4K83 walks all over it; in terms of picture anyway, will be nice if someone muxed the Atmos track from this release onto 4K83.

    • @VIDEOgameDROME
      @VIDEOgameDROME 4 года назад

      As much as I'd love to see that I don't think it's possible as Atmos uses metadata... they can't just strip each channel out and remix it, to my knowledge. It would have to be done at a professional level. The issue with 4K83 is the colours are very faded. They can't really fix that imo... they can correct colours but they can't add colour back that's been so faded and that's a shame. So I'll wait for a hybrid version of the 4K disc and 4K83 (D+83) if someone is up to the task.

    • @0270212
      @0270212 4 года назад

      Yeah you would have to do a hybrid mix using the Atmos track as source where it matches and use the 4K83 track as source where it doesn't. The Atmos track would be able to be mixed into 90% of the movie I would say.

      jtryland101: The new "Master" will give you a better quality picture, on both the 4k and the blu-ray version of this and any other movie, unless they did a poor job. The work that was put into the older versions isn't usually as technical or as well done as the newer versions, for the most part. You can always read/watch the reviews on the different versions on different sites throughout, but to answer your specific question, the 4k and blu-ray in this set, will look similar to each other, other then the HDR and sharper picture of the 4k.. This blu-ray has a different transfer, (same as the 4k) then the one from 2012, and I like it better, but that's my taste. I like it more natural, then to be "hued" to a specific color. ie: blue, orange, red etc. G

    Funnily, my brother and I - who are original purists since '77 - have been arguing not only about the latest trilogy, but now, about the jump to 4K. I find it hard to quadruple-dip,honestly! From laserdisc, to DVD, then Bluray, to now 4K?! Enough for me. I have purchased Episodes VIII and IX in 4K and positioned their Blurays into my 2011 'Saga' box set (bumping the 3 bonus features elsewhere), thus completing my saga, albeit in HD, only. PLUS, isn't it true that all 'special edition' digital effects were never rendered in anything higher than HD, so 6 of these films will have lower-res digital work simply upscaled, right?

    Disney had nothing to do with the scan it was done by George Lucas before the sale for the 3D reissue Reliance did the scan. Lucas paid for the scans not Disney. Disney just sat on them for most of a decade.

    Looks like I'm boycotting another release.

      The longer in the tooth physical media gets the less likely a release of the unaltered original trilogy is. This might very well be the last time the SW films are released on physical media, so the hope for an OT release will soon lay with digital and streaming media.

    I bought the Skywalker Collection. If you have Plex and a good internet connection I would be willing to let you try watching these at full resolution. Would be the same as the disk if you have the Nvidia Shield since other devices don't handle Atmos well.

    Shame because Empire is my fave. I cannot believe they messed up the most cinematically beautiful (arguably) in this trilogy.

    I wish it came with a DVD instead of a standard blue ray. I think 4K blue rays should do that instead, come with DVDs if they have to include another disk

    Am I the only one that won't buy the prequels after Lucas added all dumbshit CGI? I remember the originals from my childhood and that's what I want to see again. I know he has said the original negatives don't exist anymore, so I guess I'm just never going own them, but still sucks.

    Hi World, it's me, the one guy in the galaxy that loves the prequels. Kinda worried how they look considering their digital tendencies and that Disney reeeeally doesn't care about them that much. I might grab the AOTC ones, cause my DVD is in 4:3? Hey, one dollar at a yard sale.
    I almost wanna see if III on 4K has... the high ground? Eh? Eh?
    ...I'll leave.

    I will never buy these at any price point - donate to Team Negative 1 for the superlative work they've done on 4K77, 4K83 and the work they're doing now on 4K80. Team Negative 1 are true passionate Star Wars fans. Disney is trash - their Star Wars movies are trash - Disney+ is trash - their 4K Blu-ray's are mostly trash - their censorship of timeless classic films is trash. I don't boycott anything and I'm boycotting Disney.

      HDR is what's keeping these discs at the front and center, that's the part of 4K that is most alluring.

    • @TomlinsonHolman52583
      @TomlinsonHolman52583 4 года назад +2

      @@EpicB787Animations - HDR is just average on these discs at around 1,000 nits peak, (Disney+ versions don't even give you real HDR). I'd much rather have original-print-sourced 4K SDR with all the life and grain - over these versions which are scrubbed-down with DNR, feature low bit-rates, frozen grain and lackluster blacks - not to mention they're the inferior Special Editions.
      There's always the possibility Team Negative 1 will go back and give the trilogy HDR grading after Empire is finished as well - especially if people donate.

      @@LILGHETTI Disney deserves to go out of business after treating Star Wars (and its fans) so poorly (with their awful Sequel Trilogy disaster). Disney's censorship of classic films is also a detriment.
