Kiki Dee was the first artist Elton John signed when he started his own record label. She was a street/club singer. He heard her and was so impressed with her talent, he signed her. This song was him lending his name to her in order to launch her career. Very generous move on his part.

    • @knuteboy3778

Actually her career started several years before Elton's. She cut her first single in 1963. There's a clip on youtube of her in a British film with the Small Faces in 1965. He did sign her to his label, but it was her third label by that point I think. She was actually the first white British artist signed to Motown records, but she struggled to make hits. Elton was definitely a boost for her.

    • @user-gt2uf8cq9y

No no no. Kiki Dee was a hardworking pop-soul veteran, starting in 1963 with the Fontana label and then in 1970 was the first white British singer signed to Motown. A great, powerful example: "Why Don't I Run Away From You?" ruclips.net/video/Ipz5m7L4YgQ/видео.html

I think as one ages, one becomes more discerning. You wind up actually listening to the words instead of merely reacting to beat. Then you pick all the nuances of the words and the pronunciation of the words.
But, yes, that girl can sing.
Interesting aspect about duets: who is the better singer? The dominant voice or the undertone, the backing vocal? I think the backing vocal because they are lifting the other higher.

This is arguably the most 70's song ever created. (#1 in 1976)
If you want one song to represent the decade, this works really well.
Happy, "groovy" melody, lyrics about love and light, this was before disco, but leads you where the culture is heading, a good blend of the band feel of the early 70's transitioning to the dance feel of Disco

When this song came out (1976) there was no MTV, but thank God that there was Don Kirshner's Rock Concert, for which music videos like this were created. I used to watch Burt Sugarman's Midnight Special, until Saturday Night Live actually pushed Burt's show to midnight (it used to come on at 10:30). These two shows gave rock fans a chance to see rock stars (I couldn't afford rock concerts until I was an adult).

Pauline Matthews (born 6 March 1947), better known by her stage name Kiki Dee, is an English singer. Known for her blue-eyed soul vocals, she was the first female singer from the UK to sign with Motown's Tamla Records.
Dee is best known for her 1973 hit "Amoureuse", her 1974 hit "I've Got the Music in Me" and "Don't Go Breaking My Heart", her 1976 duet with Elton John, which went to number 1 on both the UK Singles Chart and the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. Her 1981 single "Star" became the theme song for the talent show Opportunity Knocks when it was revived by the BBC in 1987. In 1993, she performed another duet with John for his Duets album, a cover version of Cole Porter's "True Love", which reached number 2 in the UK. During her career, she has released 40 singles, three EPs and 12 albums.

This track was released at the end of June during the incredible summer of 1976, and it was no.1 in the UK for 6 weeks, and then knocked off the top spot by ABBA's dancing queen, which was no.1 for 5 weeks. It was also no.1 in the US at the same time.
The week before ABBA took over the top spot, the UK top10 in mid August looked like this:
1 - Elton John & Kiki Dee - Don't go breaking my heart
    2 - Wings - Let 'em in
    3 - Dr Hook - A little bit more
    4 - David Dundas - Jeans on
    5 - ABBA - Dancing queen
    6 - Johnny Wakelin - In Zaire
7 - Billy Jo Spears - What I've got in mind
8 - Bee Gees (with brother Andy Gibb) - You should be dancing
9 - Tavares - Heaven must be missing an angel
    10 - 5000 Volts - Dr Kiss Kiss

Elton was trying to give Brittney the courage to step back in the spotlight and show her she can still perform, that she still has it! He's done this with several other artists and says anyone can call him for help that is struggling and he will help with there careers. He's a wonderful person, I'm on his email list for announcing everything he does so I get to see videos most of the public doesn't. He really will help, wether it be career, drugs or alcohol treatment, he's very generous to those in need!
