  • Syzygium australe or the Lily Pilly is one of Australia’s favourite plants - mainly because it makes such good hedging.
But it's also very popular thanks to its wonderfully crisp fruits, which are very tasty and make excellent jams and jellies.

Great, are the leaves scented at all?

I have hinterland gold Lilly pillies in 500mm pots. Only wanting them to get 2m in that size pot! They spend 4 hours a day in sun. Temperature is never below 15degrees. Watered once a week. But they are dieing from the top down. Dead leaves and branches complete brown and snap crisply. I realised tonight the pots only have 2 tiny holes in bottom so I drilled 3 more. Could this be a factor?

Can i ask if these fruits are meant to be slightly sour? It is very crisp though. But I can't see how it's tasty as it's not as sweet.

Yes they are a bit tart, but make great jam with added sugar.

@@GardensOnlineVideo I see and are you meant to pick them when they're really pink or red?

Excellent video but how are they in frost?

A bit marginal - need to be in a sheltered spot with lots of mulch to survive real frost.
