How can you not be awed by his playing? I remember seeing Buddy on The Tonight Show with Mr.Carson. He is what inspired me to play the instrument. He said in an interview that by playing in a pillow you get really fast hands..He must have torn up many pillows in his day!For example playing singles is a great warm up in the pillow then try it back on the snare.Amazing difference. Play on drummer! RIP B.R.
I have been watching his solos for years (saw him live many times). Take it from a conosuior; this particular solo is pure poetry. Honestly, that level of artistry is extremely rare today especially among drummers. Just sayin.
Magnifico Buddy Rich!!!.
I have seen many solos performed by this man. From all of those performances, I believe this to be one of the greatest displays of drumming mastery. After viewing this video hundreds of times, I cannot find a single flaw in technique or execution. We are all very lucky to have access to video footage of a true virtuoso. This medium allows him to influence many generations to come, and I wouldn't have it any other way.
08watchitsucka08: Nobody, ever, has played as well as the great Buddy Rich. Simple fact. I had the pleasure of meeting him several times at Berklee in the 1970's. Absolutely awesome. These videos bring back memories, but live he was incredible.
Let's consider a few things here. This was an outdoor concert in the Domincan Republic in summer. The temperature was in the 90's. Very high humidity. The stage lighting added at least 10 degrees to the temperature on stage. Buddy was dress is a full tux. This video shows just how spectacular he really was. Not just his drumming, but his total and complete dedication to Jazz, his band, and to giving the audience 110% every time - no excuses. All things considered - absolutely astounding ~
I think that Buddy's feel was a once in a century event, no doubt about that in my mind. Every single second of his solos is composed by brilliant phrasings and ideas which go brilliantly well with each other. I can never get enough of him and I'm always thinking about his incredible fills, swing, power, finesse, speed, incredible snare dynamics, hi hat mastery, one-handed mastery, single stroke mastery and pretty much any other conceivable. THE BEST drummer of ALL TIME.
Yes, you have to give Buddy all the credit in the world. This was an outdoor concert in South America, it was VERY hot and humid, tons of stage lights made it even hotter. They are in tuxes, no less. He was 65 at this time. This is the concert where he had a slight heart attack because of the conditions. This is why Buddy was the best -- complete and total dedication to Jazz and to drumming. No excuses - just clean, straight, and play ~
There are drummers who are noted for their speed, some for their independence, some for their feel and some for their techinique. Buddy was know for it all. What's lost at times is Buddy's deep desire to play music - good music. He was driven by the music he loved, and in return he was determined not to let this great American Art form die. God Bless Buddy.
Mr Rich is a master drummer. I was not born when he was at his best. But you are takling about the man who laid the ground work for all drumming and drummers everywhere. Without players like Rich, there would be no modern drummer magazine and I think we should never forgett him. RIP Mr Rich.
Absolutely adored, revered, respected, admired, and loved by the audience, and most deservedly so. The standard of excellence by wich all others were compared. I'm proud to say that 28 years of my life overlapped his.
Yes, I second that as well. I'm 26 and Buddy is my biggest inspiration to ALWAYS improve. What he played was nothing short of amazing. Phenomenal. Otherworldly. Every buzz roll had a magical and calculated aesthetical function. Every move had a beauty. Precise, fast, clean, musicaly beautiful and what not. I can feel every drum phrase this man has created and they are all calculated amounts of drum pleasure. The kind of atittude every true artist should give to his audience. One of a kind.
Buddy Rich is top of the line! Nobody can touch this guy,end of story. This man played different killer solos for decades using only 4-5 drums. He had the best hands in the business and footwork to match. His left hand is unreal.
I've seen this many times and it still amazes me. For those of you who know about Buddy, this was solo was fairly routine. There aren't too many folks who would question that he was "The Man" of drumming. There have been a lot of great drummers but he seemed to just have and to this day even long after his death maintains that slight edge over all of them imo.
I am not a big jazz fan, and I don't listen to many old school drummers. But when you listen to Buddy Rich you are like wowwwwww. I can't believe he used to play this stuff back in the day. I mean even for modern standards this would be the top for most of drummers out there. I can't imagine what drummers back in the day thought when they saw him play like that. I think they must have been clueless about what he was playing.
Yeah, man! Carter is my biggest influence just like Neil is yours. Both are amazing drummers. I love what Beauford does. He's so solid and consistent, but he's so creative at the same time. A lot of people debate him, Peart, and Rich. I don't have much of an opinion on it, but they are all the greats that we are fortunate to be able to listen to. Carter's my favorite, but all three are such great legends. Thanks for the comment, man!
With the years, I get more and more fascinated by drummers. The sound they produce and how they produce it. Of course, it has to do with a lot of different factors. But Mister Buddy Rich is without a doubt alone in his league. No matter what drumset he uses, no matter the size of the room he's playing in, the mike placement, etc, he always make it sound like God's playing drums. Not to mention his unrivalled technique and stamina. But the sound man!!! The Buddy Rich sound!!!
That's a good way to put it. Buddy was one of the most perfect drummers of his time, even his best friend Gene K. Said it best "the best drummer to ever have drawn breath". Is Rich him self.
NO DOUBT. The greatest drummers aline will be VERY lucky if they are able to perform ONE UNIQUE SOLO like THAT in their entire life! Weckl, Colaiuta, Bellson, Webb, Gadd, Chambers, Krupa, anyone... they were/are GREAT! But only buddy could blend technique and musicality like THAT sooooo perfectly put. His notions of space, rudimental combinations, speed, stamina, delicate sense, power sense, every stroke was throught to provoke a mind blowing sense of musicality. For him, drumming was an ART.
Right, capo - I saw Buddy live 30 times, and he had some monster rock charts in his book. His brushwork was flawless. His small band work was, as well. Check out his late 50's early 60's small groups. He was indeed a very funky player when the chart called for it. "Funk City Ola" is a great example. I've been following Buddy SERIOUSLY for 37 years now, and the man played for the music, every time.
I always got to his shows early. The band wasn't there yet. They were playing at an indoor ice (hockey) arena. A huge door openes, and in comes his bus. They all walk off. B is standing there alone, looking around. My friends said I didn't have the guts to go talk to him. Wrong. I walked right up to him and introduced myself. He said he recognized me from coming to so many of his gigs in the Chicago area. We shook hands and talked for about 15 minutes. He signed an autograph for me then as well.
@17SPIKE17 there is an interview somewhere with Cathy Rich and she stated that Buddy was indeed having a heart attack that night and he was in great pain before he went on. I was a freshman in high school that year and had tickets to go see him but the concert was cancelled because he had to have triple bypass surgery. Lionel Hampton ended up playing the date with his band so I got to see another great legend instead. I did finally end up seeing Buddy in 1986 about a year before he passed.
Greatest drummer EVER. No question, no argument, no contest. Plain and simple, no one can compare to Buddy Rich. Any drummer will say the same, nobody is as good as Buddy Rich was.
No doubt. That was - as usual - a very interesting remark, capo. One thing always stricks me in this video: have ever noticed how beautiful his foot hi hat work here gives his phrasings some beautiful punctuations? Sometimes it seems like an exclamation, at others, a subtle touch. One of the many things to amaze me here.
It doesn't matter how many great drummers you watch - Weckl, Smith, Chambers and even Barker. For sheer speed, power and control, Buddy is unreachable. He's in a universe by himself, and probably always will be. The left hand/bass foot combo at 5:40 is AMAZING!
Its absolutely scary Buddy's ability to create Mozart-like compositions on the spot. Every drum phrase is brilliant and memorable during his whole presentation. I've NEVER seen anyone that could play so brilliantly for so long and soooo accurately like him. Certainly a level not to be attained, but just admired. Art Tatum, Paganini, Buddy Rich.
thats great Budy Rich was a great person so good,he was the teacher from my teacher i learned much thanks Budy Rich you are the best!!!!!!!!!!!!!¡¡¡¡¡¡¡
Well said, indeed. Yes, for Buddy, it was ALL about the music. This is a man who led his own band, in various incarnations, for most of his adult life. That ALONE is amazing. I read an interview with him where he stated that if it was up to him, he would never solo. Just groove the band, straight ahead. But, as we all know, no WAY his fans would ever tolerate him not soloing. Worked out for the best, I'd say ~
Yes, his musicality here is out of this world (only surpased by Buddy playing on his pink shirt, IMO). Genius. His playing on the hi hat alone while his left hand gently complements his his up side with (backbeats!???) is breathtaking. People should pay attention to videos like this in order to understand his genius rhytmical and technical combinations. No doubt.
I've watched literaly thousands of different drummers from many drum fields. It inclides hip hop, swing/be bop, fusion, rock/prog/thrash/death/black metal, marching snare drummers from Scottland, Canada, Switzerland, DCI and DCA from the USA, Samba, Latin in general, Blues, Drum n bass, and the list goes on... and I still say with confidence that Buddy Rich was the greatest drummer to ever hold a pair of sticks. The only thing more incredible than his hands was his savant mind. Astonishing.
I love the suit.. I guest played (as a drummer) at a friends gig once with a suit on, and i actually played better than i usually do, That is the awesomeness of a suit! :D
Buddy was legendary not only in speed and technique, but in pure musicianship. He knew exactly what to play and when, and with feeling and intelligence. He did triply so in this performance, and what you see here is Buddy playing amazingly while suffering a heart attack as he plays. That's right: he's having a heart attack during this performance. His daughter Cathy explains in another video posted on RUclips.
As great as this performance is by Mr. Rich, let's not forget a few points that make this even more incredible. This was an outside concert in South America. The conditions were an above 90 degree temperature, as well as very high humnidity. The band, because of playing with Sinatra, were in tuxes. The stage lighting was very hot, adding to the temperature. Buddy was in his 60's when this was filmed. This shows talent and dedication beyond anything we see today. Buddy was the Best, period ~
There is absolutely no doubt. I've checked the very best drummers in the known world and NONE have surpassed him. Some come considerably close, but NONE as gifted since then. I've seen sooo many different videos from the man, I can't stress enough how much of a genius he was. A technically emotional drummer, no doubt. When you have technique not followed by monster musicality, you've got NOTHING. BR, R.I.P.!
I'm not a drummer although j wish I could've become one from early years because k know I would be peninsula like Buddy Rich. I mean man has inter-dimensional hands. He beats up those cans like no other. A real joy to watch and be awe struck
CreadorMex: A number of the faculty were sidemen for Buddy Rich and he came to Boston several times while I was there. He wasn't what I would call chatty (with a nobody like me), but it was such a pleasure to meet him and to hear him live.
There is something about this solo I really like. It has a certain lighness about it that solos from his younger days didn't seem to have. I like, it's my fave without a doubt.
there's drumming.. and there's buddy rich. buddy is the best ever period. insane speed rythm stamina technique creativity the list goes on. i only wish i could do a fith of what this great man did. r.i.p buddy.
I loved Buddy Rich, however, I gave up the chance to see him live in Edinburgh because I was playing drums in a local club! I knew I should play drums when I was 5 years old, and although I loved and still love Buddy it is more important to follow your dreams! X
Buddy Rich was the best & fastest drummer the world has ever seen & made more money doing it than any other drummer. When he was 5 years old during the great depression he was making a thousand dollars a day as "Traps the Drum Wonder" He had no formal music education & was leading bands by age 11.
real music!!!! i love it.... buddy rich man... bless his soul... ignore the ignorant ones guys.... we know that he's a high roller!!!! buddy rich!!!! what a legend......... JPSS97 i agree with you dude...
never compare The Greatest Buddy Rich and Travis Barker .. Buddy is one of the greatest and the most influential drummer of all time, he played his first gig when he was just 18 months. He didn't do a lot of practice, just play on he stage .. I can say He is the truly talented drummer on this planet.. R.I.P Buddy Rich,, you are the only one
How he did this solo in hot humid weather in his 60's wearing a fucking suit is totally amazing. Any drummers here ever tried playing in a suit? Rich is untouchable,he's the top of the line.
According to Cathy, he did have a mild heart attrack at this point. Check out the Cathy Rich video here on YT. His heart surgery was not until about 6 months later. All in all, a strong testament to Buddy's dedication to his band, and his extremely strong work ethic. Seems like they don't make 'em like that any more. I saw him live shortly after his surgery, and he was absolutely electrifying. My trombone player at the time, who had never seen Buddy live, said that he was a god.
Buddy had a brother named Mickey who was a tenor sax player, and who played with Buddy's big band for a little while. He also had a guitar playing nephew named Josh, who also played with him for a bit. Hope this helps.
Some have called him the greatest jazz drummer but Buddys ability und virtuositiy transcend genres! Of course he has not played punk rock or metal but his virtuosity and speed not only in terms of snare drum technique but also hand foot combinations are rarely matched AND Buddy plays with the greatest finesse, hipness and style that you can encounter! Buddy Rich is the Mozart of Drums!
How can you not be awed by his playing? I remember seeing Buddy on The Tonight Show with Mr.Carson. He is what inspired me to play the instrument.
BR, R.I.P.!
Buddy rich The Super Human.
This man was realy out of this world. Long may his legend be celebrated.
WOW, GENIAL!!!!!!!!!!
I'm not a drummer although j wish I could've become one from early years because k know I would be peninsula like Buddy Rich. I mean man has inter-dimensional hands. He beats up those cans like no other. A real joy to watch and be awe struck
The greatest of all. No one will never play like this.
This man is INCREDIBLE!!!! His technique is very accurate.
I really loved it =D
I loved Buddy Rich, however, I gave up the chance to see him live in Edinburgh because I was playing drums in a local club! I knew I should play drums when I was 5 years old, and although I loved and still love Buddy it is more important to follow your dreams! X
buddy rich continues to amaze me
WOW, all I can say is WOW Buddy, you are amazing!!!
Buddy Rich was the best & fastest drummer the world has ever seen & made more money doing it than any other drummer. When he was 5 years old during the great depression he was making a thousand dollars a day as "Traps the Drum Wonder" He had no formal music education & was leading bands by age 11.
awesome!!
real music!!!! i love it.... buddy rich man... bless his soul... ignore the ignorant ones guys.... we know that he's a high roller!!!! buddy rich!!!! what a legend.........
My trombone player at the time, who had never seen Buddy live, said that he was a god.
buddy rich is an amazing drummer and he's getting old and he still is drumming and good... amazing
Buddy had a brother named Mickey who was a tenor sax player, and who played with Buddy's big band for a little while. He also had a guitar playing nephew named Josh, who also played with him for a bit. Hope this helps.
greatest drummer that has every lived
Some have called him the greatest jazz drummer but Buddys ability und virtuositiy transcend genres! Of course he has not played punk rock or metal but his virtuosity and speed not only in terms of snare drum technique but also hand foot combinations are rarely matched AND Buddy plays with the greatest finesse, hipness and style that you can encounter!
Buddy Rich is the Mozart of Drums!
omg i will never be that good
great drumming, buddy is the best!
