    You can spray on leaves of plants, especially on plants that are brown with root rot! 1 tsp., Peroxide to 1cup water, in spray bottle. You can also spray the same solution on soil before you intend to plant anything. I learned on a channel called, Daisy Creek Farms with Jay Singh. I learn from you ,Gary and Daisy Creek.

    i'm a first time gardener, and i've followed your instructions and advice completely, used your seed shop seeds, and i've had tremendous success! in fact, i started more seedlings than i have room for and they all germinated, grew, and thrived! today i woke up and saw white fuzz and green fuzz on some of my pepper seedlings, only two things changed - i put my cold crops out to harden them off two days before, and i gave the peppers a tiny drink from the top the night before . . . i'm going to try the bowl of ACV first since that's the least invasive treatment. thank you so much for all of the videos gary!!

    Thank you, Gary, for doing this video today. This morning, when I went to check my seedlings most of the trays had the white fungus all over the top of the soil. I just took the top layer of soil off. There are fungus gnats flying around. I’m sure it’s because I’ve been taking my plants outside for a little while every day. So tonight I picked up my phone to research what to do about it and this video was the first thing that popped up. I didn’t even search anything, so yeah, I really appreciate your experiment and recommendation. Great job as always!

      It's not from taking them outside, it's because you're watering them too much and you don't have enough airflow. Try watering from the bottom, but if you can't do that for some reason, try watering a little less and have a fan lightly blowing on your seedlings while they're still inside

    Within commercial hydroponic systems we frequently use hydrogen peroxide to disinfect the growing trays. During actual growing of the plants I have found one of the most effective ways to control mold and fungal growth as well as nats is controlling the water. If you are consistently growing more knats then beneficial plants water less to the make environment less favorable for them to thrive.

  • @CrAzYAuNtSiSsy

    Hi Gary, What a GREAT video!! Thank you for sharing your experiment. Please if you can try to advise me... I purchased about 40 bags of organic potting soil on clearance in March and I have been planting petunia plugs like a mad women this past month. I believe I have about 2000 so far. The soil is sopping wet in the plastic bags, between thawing out and being out in the rain. I noticed small bugs in the soil along with tiny ants and I was thinking it might be okay because it's organic soil. I have always used fresh bags of miracle grow potting soil and never saw that before. I think I might have a problem brewing. I see plenty of gnats and I ended up putting the fly strips to catch them. Can I spray my little petunia plants with Hydrogen Peroxide and also water them with Hydrogen Peroxide? Or should I just try to water each and every tray from the bottom with the 4 to 1 ratio ? I am so afraid of killing these plants and I don't know what to do. I am growing them for neighbors, our local church and town. What would you do Gary?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  4 года назад

      So those are fungus gnats and they breed like crazy and the larva eat the roots. I would first let the plugs dry pretty well so soil is dry on top. Grab a flat and use peroxide as the 4:1 ratio. Test 1 flat see how they do at that ratio for like a week. Basically your testing the ratio. Keep up the strips. Are they outside or inside? I am assuming inside. Take the flats out too as often you can. And let the wind blow away the adults. Good luck

    Once I get my containers "refurbished" I plan to spray the contents really good with hydrogen peroxide before I add my seed started plants to the containers ..... some people put H2O2 in the water every time they water their plants. They say it makes the stems thicker and actually acts like a bit of a fertilizer. The one thing I also will do is rake the top couple of inches of soil in my containers a few times before I add my started plants to possibly disrupt any pest eggs near the surface. Thanks much for doing this experiment .... very interesting results. Hope you have the best year ever ..... take care.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN

      Id pick a ration and test it. Green leaves can be fragile. 2:1 may be fine but you might find you have to go higher and even if 2:1 was safe... a more dilute ratio is just as effective. You save money.

    I appreciate your instruction in the scientific method. Fungi communities are important to nutrient and water absorption. Most fungus is NOT pathogenic. Soil drenches in garden should be followed by mychorhysal innoculation to restore balance.

      For starting mix it is not as important. I do add in worm casting to help. I found the potting up, the next step really important for the fungi and soil life. The balance comes back fast at the speed microbes reproduce is crazy good.

    Good stuff! Since I switched to T 5’s a couple of years ago from the old heavy ballast lights I have had trouble with damping off. I figure it’s because the T5’s are so much cooler running the mold gets a good start in my cool basement. I have bought some heat mats for this year and I will be sure to have hydrogen peroxide on hand to drench the soil with a 4 to 1 ratio of water to hydrogen peroxide if needed! Thank you so much for this good work. I used to use a fungicide called No Damp on my seedlings but it was banned in our province several years ago!

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  5 лет назад +1

      So leaf spray is a different ratio. I had to cut it by a lot more that 4. I have as summer video on it for spraying tomatoes. I would use that dilution. Or if you try 4:1. Spray the leaves and soil tops for 1 plant and wait 4 or 5 days for damage.

    Mr. Gary as always a wonderful video. One question, how long do we leave the plants in the solution before we take them out? Also u said to use a 4:1 ratio. Which is 4 cups of water and 1 cup of 3% peroxide is that correct?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  5 лет назад +1

      Thats the ratio I am using. You can go 4:1 or 5:1. You should add enough that it all gets absorb. But if left sitting in extra. Just 30 minutes and dump out the excess.

  • @jordanxfile
    @jordanxfile 5 месяцев назад

    I have used 3% directly as a soil drench for a long time with zero issues, on the contrary it boosts plants. One thing though, I always top water with it, carefully holding up the leaves or using a watering can with a thin nozzle, and water multiple times. Because I feel like for the H2O2 to penetrate and work quickly, you need to give plants a good flush from the top, and then after some water runs through the bottom you can soak them if you must. Since things like fungus gnats breed in the top layers of the potting mix, I would do the H2O2 from the top, but generously. It works for algae and fungi as well. With bottom watering, by the time the H2O2 would be wicked up into the top layers of the soil, it could very well lose most of its potency. Long story short, I water with it from the top, slowly, taking breaks to ensure you have saturation, and then do another round as a soak leaving the H2O2 in the tray for a bit You also want to be hearing the sizzling sounds coming from the potting mix. With some kinds of potting mix, you may even see extreme bubbling where the soil rises so much that it comes out of the pot a little bit.

    I had some white fuzzy mold on mine I have been picking off and covering my seedlings with cinnamon. While doing this I noticed little clear larvae slipping around inside the soil 🤦🏽‍♀️ so I found this video and I am currently soaking them in the solution. I don’t have gnats flying yet! I have basil, spinach, oregano, collard greens, and pak choy, I hope this works I only have once of each. It’s my first time starting seeds. I hope it kills off the gnats because it looks like I will be infested if these things make it to maturity.

    Okay so is it just me? But the tomatoes that didn't get any hydrogen peroxide are much taller and why wouldn't you be able to add this 4 to 1 ratio into your starting mix before you even transplant your seedlings?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  5 лет назад +4

      You sure can do it to the starting mix early and clean it. Even at a higher strength. All the tomatoes are not the same variety, I was testing germination. That taller batch might have been some cherries that tend to grow fast.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  5 лет назад

      Well not being there it is hard to say but that isnt abnormal. Often the metal has stuff on it. As long as the light receptacle is rated for the bulb, you should be fine. Also if the clamp light is so hot, you cant touch it, I would be concerned. I gets warm to hot but not so hot it cant be touched.

      @@THERUSTEDGARDEN Thank you for your reply. My clamp lights are rated for 150w and if some smell is ok, I feel my set up is ok. I built a grow box out of a cardboard box (it fits one 72 cell tray perfectly) several years ago and lined it with aluminum foil. The foil tears and was getting in tough shape. This year a relined the box with foil mylar rescue blanket which seems more durable. I think the smell seems stronger because it's a small enclosed space. Also I decided to remove the shields of the clamp lamps since I'm germinating pepper seeds and they need the warmth more than light at this time. That also reduced the smell. I also put LED lights on my birthday list. Thanks for all your information you share on your videos. I use many of your tips and practices in my gardening.

    Have you ever used BT-I to get rid of the nats. I will soak the granules 2 Tbls. to 1-1/2 cups water for a day then screen it clean and add 3 more cups of water and put it in a spray bottle and give that to my wife to spray the soil (she has 15 or so plans that must stay inside here in Maryland) over the winter . So far its worked. 10 years ago we had white flies in the early spring on the seedlings it took about 2 weeks before the last ones died but they started dropping in 2 to 3 days. Thanks so much for the information I am going to use your way on the Jiffy starting mix on some tomato seeds tomorrow . My mom recently gave me rose seeds to start for her and everything I’ve read says to use hydrogen peroxide to get rid of any risk of fungus since they are easily susceptible to diseases. Can I apply the 2:1 ratio when starting rose seeds?

    • @Tinaejs
      @Tinaejs 5 лет назад

      Hydrogen peroxide in too high of concentration will fry the plants roots so you just need to make sure it's enough to attack fungus but not too much to damage roots/kill plants. I would start with Gary's radio of 4 parts water to 1 part hydrogen peroxide. If it's not enough and your plants are fine, bump it up a little.

      @@THERUSTEDGARDEN I always start all my seeds in reverse osmosis filtered rain water that has had Kelp meal added, although the Kelp meal doesnt offer much in the way of nutrition the logic is that the active growth hormones help the seedlings immune system development. The down side is that the environment created is also prime for trich,gnats, and some other issues, the good side however is the over 90% germination success.

    I could see doing this for something that isn't tomatoes, because my experience is that tomatoes don't care about fungus or gnats. They grow quickly enough that they bust through the phase where fungus and gnats could damage them. I'd sooner try this for, say, snapdragons or portulaca, something that stays tiny for a long time, but by the same token they might be more easily harmed by the peroxide. I just spray copper stuff for fungus and spray and drench azadirachtin for gnats or mites.

      You can plant 1-3 weeks earlier than the dates they give you if you have a small unheated greenhouse.

    Nothing seems to work on these fungus gnats. The neem oil seems to maintain a little control. Also, I don’t think I have an infestation. I have a habanero that it’s cotyledons are slightly curving down, wouldn’t say it was wilting. Could it be damage from gnats? Like I said there really isn’t many of them, they don’t even show up on the traps with Vaseline but they are flying around. Sometimes I don’t even see any. Plants look green and healthy except one bell pepper, it’s growing at a 90 degree angle at the top of the stem.
