Hello, I made a custom GPT for veterinarians, students and pet owners. I would appreciate it if you could test it and share your thoughts. chatgpt.com/g/g-Huwz5nFZi
I have a 20 pound dog with heart murmur & failure 😔 she was drained 3 weeks ago & they took out 1800 mls fluid. I think she now needs to be drained again, she has filled back up to near the same size. She is also on 4 meds. Pimobendan 3 times a day. How many times a day did your dog take this med? How many times did you have your dog drained before they passed away? Anything you would do different or any advice to keep my dog alive for as long as possible?
When they reach that stage of fluids accumulations in the abdomen most dogs need to be drained weekly or every 2 weeks. Your veterinarian may need to use two different diuretics to control the fluid accumulation better. If your dog is using Furosemide only as a diuretic you can ask your veterinarian if the combination Furosemide / Spirolactone is an option for your dog. Our dog was using Pimobendan twice daily.
My 8 pound 4 year old Yorkie was attacked by my ex's Staffordshire Pit mix ("always the sweetest dogs" until they're not) right in front of me... I watched her shake him he was like the letter J multiple times. Caused internal blunt force trauma. He started building fluids and it's becoming more frequent. Last week they removed 500mls from his abdomen (1.1 pounds for a small 8 pound dog) and they charged $690. Needs to be done every two weeks it seems. My ex takes no responsibility, has no empathy. Won't admit his dog is vicious. I'm afraid that soon the only option will be euthanasia. It's terribly depressing.
@@veterinarychannel4u Agreed.... I tend to keep a positive attitude in life but this one is pretty rough for me. The accredited vet hospital I used for my 5 yorkies (used to be 6 but I rehomed one to a wonderful home where my friends had one lonely dog, now they are amazing friends) performed exploratory surgery and found nothing and has said that it is from the physical trauma due to the attack. I do love my pets, and feel awful about this. Since then, I've yet to hear a single positive staffy/pit experience unless they're kept from other dogs and kids. I just wish there was a better explanation for what's causing this so I had a better understanding. I also wish there was a port I could have put on this little guy to continue to relieve this on a frequent basis. Until then, it'll have to be frequent draining of these fluids. If quality of life becomes affected, I'll sadly have to do the inevitable -and incredibly difficult - task of playing god with this guy.
This kind of procedure should be performed by veterinary professionals only. You dog can die from internal hemorrhage if you puncture by accident an internal organ like the liver or spleen.
Sadly our dog died about 3 weeks after the video. He needed to be drained at least twice weekly. Usually the frequency of need for draining can be correlated with the severity of the heart disease. The frequent need for draining can be an indication that your dog is entering the end stages of the disease. You should ask your veterinarian about increasing the frequency of the diuretics or use a combination of them to reduce the fluid accumulation in the abdomen. Low salt diet is very important.
My dog just lost 9lbs of fluid, she's very tired after. Doesn't want to go for a walk or the park. Can barely walk. Is that normal? What can I do to get her energy back up?
It is normal to be tired after the procedure. Ask your veterinarian to check the potassium levels in the blood. Low potassium can make them week. Offer some bananas to your dog which are rich in this element or ask your veterinarian to prescribe a good potassium supplement.
Our dog has been diagnosed with pulmonary Hypertension for about 2 years now. We've asked the doctor for diuretic but she tells us that she doesn't need it, or that something like a diuretic is not required for her type of heart condition. However they have told us her abdomen is distended.. I dont get why they wont give us a diuretic... Any advice?
Request a radiographs of the abdomen to confirm the presence of fluids. Sometimes a simple procedure called abdominal tap is useful to detect the presence of fluids. The presence of fluids can be indicative of your dog been in the end stages of the condition. If available in your area, a consultation with a veterinary cardiologist is the most logical step. At the time of the video, our dog Ace was on Vetmedin, Enalapril, Viagra and two different diuretics (Lasix and Spirolactone). Sometimes his abdomen needed to be drained three times per week. Unfortunately his condition was due to untreated heartworm disease by his previous owners.
@@veterinarychannel4u thanks for the advice. I will deff lee that in mind. We did get her a cardio gram last year but they recommend another . It’s so expensive $500. She’s been in and out of emergency for the past 2 months but they haven’t really told us any new Info. She’s only taking viagra, I wonder if she should be on other meds. Honestly for how much money we’ve spent on the elimination method I am surprised they haven’t brought suggested we get her abdomen checked
Do you know long it take for them to recover. Mine just had fluid remove also.she not eatting or drinking water.what can I do.an how do I stop the fluid from coming back?
Unfortunately heart failure is a progressive disease. Usually they develop fluid accumulation in the advanced stages of the heart condition. They only way to manage is by increasing the frequency of the diuretics or use different combination of diuretics ( per example Furosemide plus Spirolactone). Ask your veterinarian for an appetite stimulant if your pet is not eating.
My dog had 9lbs of fluid drained yesterday during heartworm treatment . Can this make him dehydrated? He drank alot after the procedure yesterday, but barely ate or drink any today..🤔
He can be dehydrated but just a little from the procedure. Usually the hydration status gets to normal quickly. The fact that your dog needs abdominocentesis is an indication that the condition is in advanced stages. Ask your veterinarian about the possibility of adding another diurectic to the treatment protocol ( Furosemide plus Spirolactone).
@@veterinarychannel4u ok thanks i will try anything rn.. he is on furosemide & Enalapril but he did mention upping the fluid pill some to help. He's just so tired

We would not recommend to do this at home. This is a procedure that requires medical expertise. You can lacerate an internal organ with the needle and produce an hemorrhage.

The cost of this kind of procedure depends of many factors. The cost varies from hospital to hospital. Usually if you are a client with a good establish relationship with the veterinary hospital you can get a break on the cost of the procedure. I would recommend to establish a client-patient-doctor relationship with a privately own hospital rather than a corporate hospital. Corporate Hospitals are not going to give you a break in the cost of the procedure for sure.

The procedure is called abdominocentesis.
