    Just wanted to let you know how awesome this pattern is! We purchased it and used the it to make 4 helmets and shields for a winter canoe race in Kenora , Ontario we just participated in. They were a big hit with the crowd and stood up well to the elements and rigor of a race. I think they helped us channel our inner Vikings because we WON! Thanks soooo much!

      I'm curious as to where the myth came from like was there another group with horned helmets and people just confused them with Vikings or was it just movies that portrayed them that way

    • @logan_fulford
      @logan_fulford 7 лет назад

      darkest3angel3 Well they used horns as, well, horns, like the instrument kind. But when one was found next to a helmet it was assumed that it was part of a helmet and not as an instrument. But I have no idea whether that is right I could be completely wrong, I'm sure being RUclips someone will correct me :)

    • @grimgirl99
      @grimgirl99 7 лет назад

      SuperNova they were also used for drinking. I think one of the main reasons for the horned helmet stereotype happened because of an opera of some kind, although i am not sure if this is true or not.

    Wow, I've never seen foam work done with hot glue before. I can't even manage a helmet with contact adhesive. I'll definitely be trying the 5cm at a time 'technique'. Thank you for the video!

    • @LostWax
      @LostWax  5 лет назад

      Yep, I have been using hot glue almost exclusively for the last couple of years and love it. It is really helpful if you have a glue gun with adjustable temp so you can keep the glue as cool as possible- less burnt fingers, and less time to hold sections together until it cools. Also here's a little vid about getting smooth seams: ruclips.net/video/KqUxAOILUnM/видео.html

    So I purchased this pattern from you and made three helmets for my buddy's annual Viking Costume Party... Love the pattern and your videos! Keep it up, I'm already planning next years Halloween costume (I usually do 2-3 costumes and go pretty big) and I'm probably gonna use some of your plans for that too. One thing I added to this helmet was a metal wire around the outside (beneath the foam band) to help with a more of a custom fitted shape.

    I used one of your patterns about 4 weeks ago to make a top hat, and after a lot of searching for cheap foam, I found a diamond plated foam floor mat at Walmart. It was HUGE, and I thought..."that's a lot of top hats." So I bought it. Glad to see you're using the same stuff. So my questions for you are: Your videos are so professionally done, do you have someone that helps you write a script, film, and edit? I'd love to see a behind-the-scene video. And do you have another side job, besides the things you sell on your website and your patterns? And where can we find you're upcoming podcast?And about this video... I have no need for a Viking helmet, but this was so hilarious and oozing with awesomeness, that I just can't help reconsider. Hey, a Viking helmet can come in handy, right?

    • @LostWax
      @LostWax  9 лет назад

      +Jennifer Clark Thanks for your awesome comments and questions,. I LOVE my big foam floor mat that I made the viking helmet from, it's denser than the camping mat foam that I have used in most of my other vids, so it holds it's shape well. I will answer your questions on our podcast, which I think should be this Tuesday- I will put the link in the video description once it is up.
      Have a super great day!!!!

    i am not hating or aything now, but to make an accurate viking helmet, remove the horns, as vikings here in scandenavia didnt use horns :) but this looks really cool :D i really like it :D

    • @LostWax
      @LostWax  9 лет назад +11

      +tornado77881 Yeah, I did realise that when I made the pattern, but the cliche works- if you see a helmet with horns, you immediately think- VIKING!

    • @arnjhon
      @arnjhon 9 лет назад

      +Lost Wax when you see a medieval style helmet with horns you emmidietaly think viking, or skyrim!
      Me being quite a viking fan 'hate' all 'viking' helmets with horns as they keep spreading the wrong message about vikings. And this I'd say is more a roman style helmet with horns, vikings did not have neck guards nor cheeck guards, although some had chainmail down protecting the neck, and very few had chainmail covering the the whole face, except the eyeslits. Although chainmailed helmets were considerably more rare as they were obviously more expensive than without chain. :)

    I hate hot glue! not really, but I sort of do after doing the main part of the helmet with just hot glue! is the reason for not using contact cement just the toxic fumes aspect? it was so much easier on the other projects, after this on I might make it again with contact cement and just wear my respirator. I can't believe you got your horns to work with the hot glue lol, I have ripped mine apart 4 times now to start over.

    • @LostWax
      @LostWax  9 лет назад +1

      +Christine Virginia Yeah. Contact cement is way easier to work with. If you can do it outside you are alright, but I just can't think doing it inside even with a respirator can be good for you. I guess I have been rethinking a lot about chemicals since my son was diagnosed with leukaemia. You just don't know what they are doing to you….. Hey the one good thing about hot glue is if you mess up, you can heat it up with a blowdryer, and it all comes apart:)

    • @christineschihuahuas
      @christineschihuahuas 9 лет назад

      +Lost Wax I only use the contact cement outdoors (for safety of my kids and because the flammability issues scare me too), but I have asthma so I wear the respirator anyways.
      sorry to hear about your son I will keep him in my prayers :(
      I didn't even think about reheating hot glue! Will it work with the high temp stuff? if not I will have to get a low or multi temp glue gun, since all I have right now is high temp.

    • @byronboy55
      @byronboy55 8 лет назад +1

      You can do either, If you are just gonna wear it once or twice, you could just leave it. The metallic paste will wear off over time, so I like to apply a layer of mod podge after it is all finished.

      Yep, generally once you glue something together with the hot glue, if you try pull it apart, the foam will rip rather than the glue. The great thing is that if you mess up, you can heat up the seam and unglue it to try again. Just don't leave it in a hot car.....

      +Mr Jara At this point the only way to accept payment for me is with credit card or PayPal. Have you tried your debit card with PayPal?
