- Slow Pitch Jigging Yellowfin Tuna | JohnnyJigs | Offshore Fishing
We headed offshore on the American Patriot for a 3 day long range Yellowfins Tuna trip. The big question for us is can a traditional slow pitch jigging set up handle a large yellowfin tuna. We came with the goal of getting this fish on a slow pitch outfit no matter how long it took. The trip was a success for the American Patriot and us as well. Our channel is dedicated to offshore fishing mainly slow pitch jigging. If you like this video please head over to our channel JohnnyJigs Tv and check out some more of our slow pitch jigging videos.

Awesome guys!! As a San Diego tuna guy, I love to see y'all doin the long-range thang🤙🤙❤️
Yeah man thanks...🤙
Didn't know what you guys were about until this video, and I'm sold. Totally the love group behind Johnny Jigs! Keep doing what you guys are doing, keep pushing this amazing technique. I've switched to mostly slow pitching jigging myself, and more people should experience the excitement of the hookset and fight with minimal gear. Johnny, I think you're totally right about the required gear. I just got back from Tortugas where I caught a 44 lb black with a Temple Reef g2, and the fight was under 2 minutes. On the other hand, a 60+ amberjack took me 18 minutes, but he was over 400 ft deep and I was tired from a big red from that same spot. I thought for sure those that a large grouper couldn't be caught on that gear. Now I'm just excited to hook a 60+!
Miguel, Thank you for taking the time to reach out. Congrats on your black. I caught a 38# amber jack on a Accurate Valiant 300 spj power 2 pro jigger over the weekend in 350' of water. I want to say it took around 5-10 minutes max. It wasn't on film so I couldn't tell exactly. I'm always amazed at what can be accomplished on such light gear. We are super fortunate and grateful to do what we do. I believe I speak for the whole team when I say Thank You and Jig On! ...Johnny
Awesome,nice job Johnny!!!
You got Capt Mikey, man is a overnite legend up here in Nj/Ny
He definitely knows his stuff... I was great to pick his mind on big tunas and the gear used...
@@JohnnyJigsTV him and his crew on the hunter are the best boat in brooklyn.

Johnny, love your content! I landed an 80-85 pound yellow fin in Baja on 30lb line and a saltiga 30ha. He almost spooled me and I fought him for 1hour and 45 min! He kicked my butt!

Great boat! good jobs guys!
Thank you..
Love your videos! Just got my temple reed SPJ rod this year, the Benny Ortiz version. Looking to try out SPJ for pelagics out here on the West coast. Got a 2 day trip coming up in a couple weeks. Theres good signs of some bluefin in the 1.5 day range. Hoping I score a bluefin on a SPJ set up. Your vieos have helped me learn so much about SPJ, cant wait to try it out here on the Pacific coast.
Awesome bro..that is a great head boat SPJ rod..would love to hear how you do on a bluefin...Good luck Eric...Johnny
Awesome. Dying to go on that boat.
Thanks Dennis
Man that trip looked sick. I LOVE that watermelon torpedo you guys hooked me up with. I'll be by the store next week, looking to get some more at different weights. Can't wait for the rod to be back in stock too!
Yeah man!! Trip was awesome. See ya then...🤙🤙

45 lb long fin on a 6,000 spinner with chaos 200g speed jig rod 40lb braid 50lb floro. Lighter tackle is king
Waiting you guys restock the Jonny jigs slow pitch rod !!!!!!!
Me too! It could be as soon as the end of next week.......
@@JohnnyJigsTV i will be looking 👀
Ironically, we’ve been jigging tuna out of NY since the 80’s, but it was all slow pitch. Never burning it in. We also called it yo-yo jigging at the time. By the way - that is a sick boat.
Excellent video, I'm a smidge jealous we ain't got anything like that here in south carolina where I am.. but the reef donkeys are always a blast!
Dude jump on one of those trips. It's a blast for sure. AJ's are power houses and fun for sure...🤙
Yea I've been thinking about it but I really cant afford it 700-800 for the trip plus the travel time and accommodations.. then there is the wife lol. Maybe one day!

Thank You
@@JohnnyJigsTV Np always
Gotta get you guys up to NJ jigging some Monster Yellowfin! catching the XL tuna up to 140 lbs right now. I am using a Shimano trevala px jigging trigger rod with a Shimano speed master 12-II speed
I fish in the north east for bigger tunas and we use 65-80 p braid with 30-100 lb fluorocarbon . BUT AN OLD SCHOOL TRICK IS use pink ande line for deep dropping because it disappears after 30 ft
Usually use 65 or 80lb braid for the 70lb plus class fish. Plus up here you can hook a bigeye on a jig. 30 to 40lbers are fine on lighter tackle.
C.H. Doyle with the subtle Zyn plug
😂😂😂
I live in SoCal and between 50-75 lbs it's fast to land yellowfin, but over a 100lbs it's getting really hard! Over 200lbs it's kicking your ass bad!
Thanks Gene we are heading that way in April
Good 👍 mantap 🎣 salam dari Indonesia 🎣
After catching a bunch of them in costa rica i noticed the fish pushing 100 plus pounds the easy game really started to change they take really deep dives and if you cant get there head flipped your in for a fight, also you dont want to put heavy drag on these fish 20 lbs is what i was told not to go above do hook pulling out. That being said i'm fairly sure you could wack one up to 100 lbs on slow pitch fairly easily, after that i'm not so sure. The california long range guys or north eastern guys may already have done this on big tuna im curious myself on just how big a fish you can actually bring in on slow pitch gear.
Up to 200# on torsa 20 with 65 # braid and OMT Spanko jigs.
Yeah Paul thank you for chiming in on that. I would love to get the conversation going.👍
My bluefin setup for the OBX would be my goto for targeting 100lb YFT. Jigging Master PE7 reel and a black hole 450g rod (80 or 100lb braid and the heaviest leader they will eat). Large YFT are pound for pound the best fighters out there.
Agreed! I have an acid wrapped BH450 blank that I reach for anytime I see YFT over 80#
When is the new 9 1/2 foot rod going to be available
Hey John we have the blanks in and should be offering them by summer time if not sooner. BTY good eye you picked up on something really cool.
@@JohnnyJigsTV reserve 2 for me please... gonna check out your new store next week
NP will do..
Wait what!? 9 1/2 rod? For long fall I'm guessing? Sign me up!
Great video! Here in NJ we vertical jig bluefin from 40-80 lbs with 65 lb braid on reels as small as a Shimano torium 16.
From watching your videos I see you generally use much lighter braid for slow pitch. I’m putting together an outfit for slow pitch tuna here. So far I’ve got a Saltiga 15 with 330 yards of 30 lb J-braid. I’m thinking this may be too light, but still gonna try it.
What rod, reel and pound test line were you using on that yellowfin?
Thanks, Bob
Bob I love the info man Thank You. I was using 40lb yo-zuri super braid with 12' of 50lb fluorocarbon top shot. For this trip instead of using a FG knot I went with a PR for the strength. My assist hooks were Gamakatsu 620 single assist one on top and one on the bottom for the reasons that they are super strong hooks and lessened my chances of snagging a large fish making it more likely to have a successful fight. I also used a Accurate Valiant 600nn. If by the chance I did get into the 100lb class fish I'm confident I had some great stomping power but also had the line capacity to break the will of the fish if needed. Not fishing in heavy current or great depths allowed me to bump my line up from my usual 30lb test to 40lb and stay vertical for a reasonable amount of time. Thank you for your comment and I would love to hear some feedback as you get into those large tunas on SPJ outfits....Johnny
My first yellow was on a medium ugly stick with a 5000 reel with 30lb braid and 30lb fluorocarbon, took about 20 minutes to land, 31lbs, the biggest I've seen landed 56.5 lbs was on much heavier gear and took over a half an hour
Tdubz Thanks bro..
@@JohnnyJigsTV no worries. I've seen them come in quick also though, but likely a shark was chasing your fish up to the boat in my experience if you landed one that quickly
Spinning or conventional for jigging, can you do a video comparing. Thanks love the videos
I will take that into consideration. Thanks for the suggestion...
Great video! Planning on ordering a rod from your site for Pacific North West for salmon, lingcod and rockfish. Which rod were you using in the video?
Hey Bk that was a Pro Jigger power 3
@@JohnnyJigsTV Thank you.
About 40#. GJ.
I DID THE SAME THING! Still beating, blood coming down my face....by buddy almost puked. It didn't taste that bad though :)
Hey guys can you recommend a charter at maybe Hillsboro inlet: I am heading to south Florida for my birthday to see my pops. I really want to go fish with a good charter.
Try my Friend Alex from Pesca Mares Charter hit him up on Instagram @pesca_mares_capt_alex_
3:00 That song is dope
What’s the name of it please
Great clip guys
I purchased it from royalty free music. I will have to look it up for you. I spend hours going through music to try and match them to the video. Because RUclips has strict rules on music it forced me to check out alot music that is not on the radio in the process I have found some really great artists and songs that should be popular but are not. Thanks Johnny
I landed my first yellowfin off of Charleston SC on a Gosa 6000 with 30lb braid FG'd to 60lb fluro leader on a 8ft medium heavy Tallus PX. Took close to 15 minutes to bring him in. 55lbs.
This wasn't jigging though, caught him on a flatline at night
So I have a buddy that wants a slow pitch for big tuna. What rating could you use for that? 50-100lb bluefin is what he's looking for
Johnny, what color and size jig did he eat? I'm from southern Louisiana not far from Venice and we have been catching big ones on some lumps just east of Venice lately with tons of chum but I'd like to throw these jigs at the Yellowfin at our floating drilling rigs off our coast during the summer time at night. Have lots of success throwing just regular butterfly jigs in a glow color but mostly just catching blackfin in the upper water column then sending that blackfin back down for his bigger cousin. Would also like to try out a variety of your products at our shallower rigs just off the shelf for snapper and grouper. Thanks
Hey Jerry, I was using the Watermelon Torpedo jig. This jig gets down fast and can possibly get you past the neighbors tuna (blackfin) into its more delicious cousin. That is my theory!! I have fished Venice a few times and have had great success Slow Jigging the oil rigs. Venice Louisiana is a special place for me..🤙
@@JohnnyJigsTV roger that. Thanks for the timely reply!
Is there a auto-like setting? LOL
Please tell me you watched it to the end.....😂
I dont think there is
I’ve caught some 10lb+ Bonita on a 5000 stratic
How much line do you spool your reels for slow pitching tuna ? I do live In New Jersey what would recommend for this area
Hey Sid, I spool my reels to the top. For the tunas up there I would consider using a large class SPJ reel and Pack it with a min of 450-500yrds of 40# braid. Fill it to the top so you maintain as much retrieval as possible.
Japanese said choose your tackle based on the depth and conditions, not on the size of the fish 😝
Agreed...😉
I got the latest technolagy to catch yelowfin....and its very cheap🙈🙈
What jig for albacore on the west coast?
Go to Indonesia.... YFT MAN
Dua if was a rich man I would be there in a second...🤙😍Indonesia
Does a power rating of 3 mean PE 3 or is it referencing something else? Thanks
It's referring to the suggested gram size of a jig. Although I could have used a power 2 I opted to go with the 3 for a more punchy action. I found the faster movement attract tunas.
@@JohnnyJigsTV ok got it. What pound test braid do you end up using on a power 3 rod?
Vietnmese very good
Might be a dumb question but what is the Canaveral bouy? Is it the bouy offshore of port Canaveral Florida?
Yes, that is correct
@@JohnnyJigsTV that’s crazy, I thought you said the other side of Gulf Stream. The Canaveral bouy isn’t that far offshore and didn’t know people get tunas out there. Also been on your website everyday building a jig list to buy.
@@JohnnyJigsTV maybe there is more than one out there off Canaveral..lol idk but that video was epic and glad you got a yellow on the jig..I’m building my collection for chartering and hopefully putting some people on fish soon.
I thought it was for the space side of canaveral to monitor weather conditions when they used to launch space rockets
Eat beding with beer and mustad, hot spicy
I’ve got an Accurate 500xn with 30lb braid......With an 1-400 gram Ocean Legacy Long Fall rod....
Can it handle a 30lb TUNA like that ???
100% 👍👍
And expensive
Must mute so called music... dont want that stuff stuck in my head.
