Father and Son (1981), Allen Fong's directorial debut, is a shining example of the Hong Kong New Wave and a milestone of the influential movement. The film employs a social realist approach to tell a story about the complicated relationship between generations of a family, winning Best Film and Best Director accolades at the very first Hong Kong Film Awards.
In 2023, Sil-Metropole Organisation Ltd. donated the entire inventory of its film materials to the Hong Kong Film Archive for permanent preservation, including the original film materials of Father and Son. The following year, the Film Archive undertook a 4K digital restoration of the film. The project included colour grading, stabilsation, dirt and scratch removal, audio restoration, and subtitle replacement. The goal was to restore sound and picture qualities as close as possible to those of the original release. During the restoration process, the HKFA was fortunate to have worked with the film's assistant director Yung Chi-chung and cinematographer Bill Wong. They clarified many uncertainties about the production, greatly facilitating the completion of the restoration.
