In fairness to Dr. Berry, he changed from eating the Standard American Diet to eating low-carb Paleo and then went onto the keto diet. Dr. Barry found that he still had a number of medical problems that were reduced but not eliminated on the keto diet. He found by eating carnivore almost 100% of the time, his health problems were almost eliminated.

@@hugoanderkiviI've started buying and cooking roasts in the crock pot and then cutting them into thick slices and freezing them. I have found that it's the cheapest way to buy real meat. I bought a 3kg corned beef which gave me 13 servings between 140g and 160g. I've done a leg of pork and a leg of beef the same way and I'm literally currently cooking 1/2 leg of lamb. I also buy ground/minced meats (beef, lamb, pork) and cook them up and freeze them in portions. If I fry up 500g of ground/minced beef I add 3 beaten eggs and divide it into 3 and eat that over 3 or 4 days. Before I had been relying on beef, pork and chicken sausages, cooking them all up and freezing them. I will still do that for a change but I doubt that I will be eating as many of them as I had been. I just need to have some variety and convenience. I do eat avocados, onion, zucchini and sometimes cauliflower, broccoli and brussell sprouts. I'm not "clean" because I make paddle pops from sugar free jelly/jello mixed with a can of coconut cream and make mug cakes using coconut flour (stopped using almond flour) and use stevia and artificial flavourings. I've limited cheese but do eat sour cream and thickened cream and sometimes flavoured Greek yoghurts. I make my own bread using the 1 minute mug bread mix but use coconut instead of almond; it contains psyllium husk powder and ground flaxseed. I egg a lot of eggs. For work lunch I have a small tin of salmon or shredded chicken and mix it with gherkin, soy sauce, mustard pickles, or mustard, but that is only 3 times per week. Occasionally I will have a tin of soup but I take out the potato and pasta, and usually add bought cooked chicken or a couple of sausages to it.

In addition, most Americans are addicted to sugar, grains, and other very unhealthy foods that all stimulate hunger hormones. Switching to a low or very low carb diet is the only way most people can lose weight and keep it off. There will be people who have difficulty changing diets because for these individuals, sometimes food is the only good thing in their lives and meat just does not have the same associations as carbs. When it comes to sugar, etc for processed foods, it reminds of something that George Carlin once said: "There doesn't need to be a formal conspiracy when interests align."
Companies want to make money. Many of the people making the decisions don't care about anything except making money and they know that they will never personally be held accountable if they push the lines a bit or even a lot. Many companies include fines as a line item. "Part of doing business..."
If you looks back to the cigarette companies, they added a chemical to the cigarettes so they would keep burning even if you weren't puffing on it. All so they could sell more product. They actually got sued and lost because of that due to a cigarette burning down a woman's car. It would have died out if not for that chemical addition. How does that chemical effect human health? Who cares, it raised profits.
Potato chips are basically designed to be addictive. Pleasant crunch and dissolves away so it doesn't actually fill you up. Salty plus umami (savory) is the one time where 1+1 = 100. That might be more of a personal issue, tbf though.
Seeds oils originally started as an industrial waste product that companies had to pay to get rid of. Altering and putting in food suddenly turned that waste product into something that brought profit. To this day, seed oils are used as calorie fillers for processed food because they are so cheap.
Most of the processed food in America is owned by a handful of companies under different brand names to give the illusion of choice. You only need a handful of executives to push directives down the line for most of the processed food to be like this.
And it could be unrelated to that. The original food pyramid in the US had issues. The government commissioned a group of scientists to come up with a guide. When the scientists came back with their findings, the politicians laughed and said it wouldn't work. It was too expensive to feed people on benefits what they were recommending. That's how the original food pyramid in the US ended up with so many servings of grain... because grain is really cheap to buy. There is an interview on youtube by one of the lady scientists who was involved.
It's a tough situation for the common person. A lot of people trying to save money, earn money, and lie about product quality to sidestep them using inferior ingredients. We just have to do our best. Try to vote with your wallet. Try to support your local farms, etc.

Great post that is factual. I knew about the USD food pyramid and I am so happy that I did not have to explain all that although you did leave out one bit. I am certain that the USDA also wanted the grain farmers and manufacturers to keep making money and paying taxes to the US government. There were several incentives to kill the healthy diet that the dieticians recommended. And until recently, most dieticians have toed the line and lied about what humans actually should be eating. It is ironic given how much chemistry and biochemistry dieticians have to take to get their degrees. But as Dr. Ken Berry pointed out, he had those chemistry and biochemistry courses in med school and the very obvious implications regarding diet and health went totally over his head also.

@d_gaming Carnivore and vegan are both extremes. And if the food isn't clean, both are worse than, let alone better, than a diet of clean, whole food. And unless you are getting your meat from a local source, and or, can verify it is what the label says, you are fooling yourself about eating healthy. What do you think those animals are eating? ''Hundreds of recipes'' gets really small once you start eating clean meat, because it isn't easy to get, and it is telling when people say they save money on carnivore. It shows how lost they are. Again, what do you think those animals are fed? For starters, pesticide riddled grains.

So far the only way has been crowd funding. At this point, the BEST we're going to be able to do is piece together research done with small systems or issues because no one wants to touch it with a 10 ft pole and an 8 ft extension. Competing interests have the deepest pockets, deep enough to make even practicing professionals as well as tenured professors ignore the basic science they learned in their first year of college. Scientist: "Wolves need to eat meat."
    Human: eats meat.
Scientist: "Where's the data to show that's okay long-term?"
I understand that there's some nuance to this because most known societies have included plants, too, but if it's demonstrated that humans as a species have always prioritized meat when available, do we really need robust data? Is it even reasonable to accept data that shows that any species has been eating wrong for their entire history?
I'm sorry, but humans eating meat for as long as they drank water IS data of the most robust kind. Any newfangled study that contradicts this data needs to be cross-examined for sources of error or special circumstance.

"Lion: eats meat. Scientist: "Lions need to eat meat." Human: eats meat."
It's little more nuanced than that: Cats, including lions, are obligate carnivores. They can't eat anything else. Wolves can make do, for a while, with some plants as a survival food. That doesn't make them omnivore, it's just to (hopefully) get them through an episode of starvation, they can't do that for long. Humans are more like that: plants can be eaten as a survival food. If too much of the survival food is eaten, it's not good for us. Not quite as bad as for wolves, but it's a closer analogy. Dogs may be a better analogy, since they have developed a greater capacity to handle carbs than wolves since they began domestication. They can eat more carbs than wolves and stay reasonably healthy, but carbs are still only supposed to be survival food until "meat is back on the menu".

    • @pondboy3682

The "food" I used to LIKE to eat was destroying my health.
Seeing chronic veinous insufficiency worsening to the point of some day requiring one or both feet to be amputated helped me to reconsider priorities for what I liked -- to feed cravings for engineered "food" (even including modern produce) or to reverse unhealthy conditions.
I still miss eating many of the foods I had enjoyed eating for so many years, but the likelihood of getting to keep both of my feet for as long as I live (along with all of the other improvements I have experienced) makes the choice easy for me. The doctor told me I was diabetic and ill always be a diabetic.
He prescribed me with metformin and a Staten. ( Took neither ) I am taking Berberine.
Well, that didn't set well with me.
So, I started my own research, that's when I found Dr. Berry , Dr Fung , Beat diabetes pod cast , and several other's on RUclips.

In doing this I've lost 30 pounds, blood pressure is in normal range , and my A1c was 5.8 on January 29 2024. This took me 6 months to achieve.

I struggle with the notion that processed hot dogs, spam, bologne, etc are somehow better for you to eat in bulk (for a person not able to afford quality meats on a regular basis) versus, say veggies or even lentils, etc. Does Dr. Berry, who I respect GREATLY, not take into consideration what they make hot dogs from? Obviously the lowest of low quality corn fed meat possible, but more importantly, the huge levels of preservatives and other additives that I fear would kill you far faster than non meat-based alternative foods. There is a reason most people have extreme gas after consuming a bunch of 4th of july hot dogs... your body doesn't like it. Eating them daily or multiple times per week as a staple food is bad advice in my opinion.
Just my two cents on this topic. Good information overall.

    • @alexr6114
      @alexr6114 Месяц назад

Do you really think that humans two million years ago were eating quality meats? They were primarily eating what was left after stronger meaner predators killed large antelope and other animals in central east Africa. They cracked open the bones and the skulls and also consumed whatever muscle meat was left on the bones after the predators left. The vegetables and fruits that were available for human consumption were tiny and would only make up a small amount of the human diet. My guess is that the women were most likely to eat root vegetables. Hybridization of crops over the last five or more thousand years has produced vegetables and fruit that are far larger, sweeter, and far less nutritious than what was available to our ancestors though millions of years of our evolution. Dr. Berry advocates eating the best quality of meat that every individual can afford. The reality is that many people cannot afford good quality meat. That is a major tragedy.

I think we should distinguish between "standard" carnivore eating (meat, eggs, fish, diary) and lion version (meat only). I was for more than half century carbholic, always loved fruits, sweeter - better, but also loved broccoli, asparagus, zucchini, potatoes, rice, ... All but meat. Eating a lot of eggs was only good thing I did as vegetarian. And vegetarianism got me countless health issues solved mostly after regular keto, better even on carnivore. Some damage is however permanent (like scarred stomach lining confirmed by endoscopy after decades of gastritis one after another; haemorrhoids, somewhat enlarged colon "thanks" to massive amounts of fiber consumed through years, some scarring in liver because of severe NAFLD, reversed later on keto, ...).
Currently keto 7+ years, 4+ from this on carnivore. Month after i have dumped all plant matter I never felt anything restrictive about not eating anymore avocado, broccoli, asparagus, zucchini, ... Simply they were not part of my life anymore. All I now "crave" (not in sense as I was craving once sugar) is meat, eggs, cheese. Period. Never cross my mind to eat anything else ever again. And I TOTALLY enjoy my every single meal out of 2 daily usually. Nothing changed so far in this past 4+ carnivorous years.
Only lion version sounds to me restrictive as I love also eggs, cheese and other fermented low carb diary. Tried few times but I was soon back to my "regular" carnivore, plant free world.

Hey Dr. Eric. Much respect to you and your experience and level-headedness :)
I'd like to point out a few points that one might consider when assessing the legitimacy of a diet like the carnivore diet:
The vegan diet for example will heal you, somewhat, when you come from the standard American diet, but as you know, most people ditch it in the first 5 years because of health complication due to the significant lack of nutrition. Those who last longer are supplementing like there's no tomorrow, and still their health wouldn't be optimal.
-How can a diet that heals fatty liver (A cause of death), clears arteries, cure diabetes, gut issues, auto immune issues, inflammation (in all its forms), mental issues (A psychiatrists just posted a video about it), gum issues, strengthen bones, add muscle mass and reduce visceral fat (And the list goes on) be doubted for the long term adoption????!
-Here's what should be doubted for long-term adoption, every other diet. Having a strawberry or a some blueberries, or even some honey ONCE IN A WHILE while on the carnivore diet (our diet for millions of year PROVEN by science (That I can refer you to if you'd like) ) is not a crime. But being "Keto" having spinach every day (Like I did and messed up my body) is not a better option. Logically speaking.
-Now if you'd like some long-term observations, is a 65-year-carnivore enough time to tell whether a diet can be sustainable or not?? Check out Maggie the rancher and try to guess her age by watching her video with Dr. Anthony Chaffee. She's healthy as a horse. She can pick me up and walk up a mountain and has more energy than all the 20-year old girls I work with. I'm not exaggerating a single bit here!!!!
-Dr. Chaffee has been consuming only red-fatty meat for about 11 years now and doesn't consume anything else. Check with him about his health and ask him if he has a single health issue that needs attention. There's none!
If a diet can yield so many benefits in a short period of time, and the benefits continue to happen over time (per thousands of people experiencing the same results. It's all on RUclips, just pick one and click on it) why would a sane person be weary of it? I'll tell you why. It's the noise around us. People trying to sell their products that are available in every corner 24/7 365 days a year!!! That's why.
Remember that the carnivore diet is not a "new trend" but it's rather going back to our roots and allow our bodies to thrive on what ALL our genetics were designed to accept and understand how to process for AT LEAST 350, 000 years as homosapians and more than 3 million years before that!!!
-Also, it has been proven that plants have toxins that are BAD for you. I personally experienced this. Especially the oxalates. Why the hell would I need to put those toxins in my body???!
Is there anything I need from plants that I can't get from red meat?? No, the answer is no. And for those who want to argue otherwise, I will destroy you with science so don't write anything before you do your homework.
-Here's a fun fact that doesn't require research to see what's what. No one left the carnivore diet and their health didn't take a sharp dip, and no one has left ANY OTHER diet for carnivore and didn't feel much better and healed all their issues. That alone should wrap it up.
-Lastly, all you need to prove is that red-fatty meat has EVERY nutrient a human body needs, and once you prove that, it should be end of discussion. And this has already been proven unequivocally.
I just dropped my mic 😂
I have more to say about it. That was just me being lazy and not getting into the Randle cycle, gluconeogenesis and other things that even most doctors are illiterate about.
The Carnivore diet is a step up from the ketogenic diet. Many people had to take that step because Keto alone wasn't cutting it.
The carnivore diet isn't extreme. What's extreme is the amount of options we have now for things to shove in our mouths!! That's what's really extreme and ridiculous.

The common food studies done were often paid for by junk food interests to show the benefits in eating high profit junk food. As to any study, one should ask, 1. What does it say? 2. I would LOVE to see in-depth discussions between Dr. Berry and Dr. Michael Gregor (How Not To Die / How Not To Age). In his books and videos, Dr Gregor makes a compelling argument (individually citing and critiquing over 13,000 studies) for a whole food, plant based (WFPB) diet. I wonder if, whether carnivore or WFPB, the key factor is eliminating processed frankenfood? At any rate, both doctors seem honestly convinced of their conclusions and I think the entire field of nutrition would benefit from ongoing debate in these two widely disparate conclusions.
The carnivore diet is intriguing to me, but ultimately I decided to place my bet with WFPB for several reasons:
    - The incredible complexity of the human body & its microbiomes should never be underestimated. I'm not convinced a uni-diet optimizes all of these systems.
    - The possible risk of getting "locked in" to a highly restricted diet as I've seen in some case studies.
    - The uptick of alpha-gal syndrome.
    - Future availability of affordable foods. As observed, meat is being targeted, and induced shortages are anticipated in coming years.
    - The science-changing Israeli study which essentially found that the statistical models used with food studies have a critical weakness in that they assume homogeneity of cohorts to achieve one "good/bad" result, when the reality is that there are groups of genotypes - even in the same ethnicity, gender, age, etc. which react very differently to a given food. I think this should temper ALL "eat this, not that" advice. Dr. Berry himself makes the case for this when he points out three generalized lipids profiles of those on the carnivore diet.
    - I don't have time to wait for the 50-100 years to get truly long-term studies done on this question. I suspect the health (and metabolic) benefits of a carnivore diet may be at the cost of overall longevity - burning the candle at both ends, so-to-speak.
    - I don't just enjoy my food (and variety in diet), but I enjoy cultivating it, preparing it, fermenting it, and cooking/eating it for/with others, etc. It shouldn't be an idol, but it is a valuable connection to our world and others. And while I have no conscience problem with taking an animal's life to support my own, I see the carnivore diet as something to be done more of necessity (for instance, generalized food allergies).
Again, any "extreme" diet, whether carnivore, other ketosis, vegan, bread and milk, etc. is something we *should* be discussing and studying. As I've learned more and more about nutrition, genetics, the microbiome, and their effects on every aspect of our lives, I'm shocked at now little emphasis the medical community places on genetic analysis (for drug/dietary advice and informed health risk monitoring), nutritional education (for disease prevention), and voluntary nutritional monitoring (for disease management or reversal).

yes but, Dr Greger looks really gaunt / decrepit , Dr Berry looks a bit overweight here. Here is my theory : Humans are paleo- omnivores, so organic plants and meat like we have had for thousands of years, but in this day and age we are so very affected by pollution, toxins, glyphosates, oils .. A diet free of processed oils, pesticides, and excess calories, should be beneficial for most. Some need to go plant based some need to go carnivore, whatever works, the best would be to be able to eat both meat and carbs , in proper amounts not overeating and consuming good proteins ( plant or animal) and feeling satiated . Unfortunately todays chemicals and additives trick our brains into wanting more and more processed food with oils and chemicals that have messed us up.
