We used EVERY BIKE we own to try summit this mountain | White Mountain - Destined to Fail

- White Mountain is the third highest peak in California, and one I had been eyeing on the map for years. The plan was to climb and descend it in one day using the best bike suited to the terrain as it changed from tarmac to gravel to chunky trail. We gave it our best shot but as with any big mountain adventure you are at the mercy of the elements.

One of the best ever episodes!! Road, gravel, and MTB!!!
thank you :)
Love it!
I summited White Mountain (14,252 ft /4344 meters) July of 2017. I was lucky not to find bad snow until the last couple of miles up to the summit. I rode a Ritchey Swiss Cross steel bike with Canti Brakes on 35mm tires. I want to go back on a gravel bike. I would've loved lower gearing and bigger tires but that stuff wasn't widely available back then. It is truly and epic adventure! Kudos for getting as far as you did.
common man.. gravel bikes were a thing 7 years ago.. you make it sound like you went up there 1997
@@BadWithNames123incorrect. And please stop wasting your time commenting to me unless you have been to the summit of White Mountain Peak.
Magic. Thanks for all your hard prep work, Alex for great videos, and taking us on these adventures!
Safa please post more often and post more of your day in the vids as well its really enjoyable to watch
I post every week! Not a big vlogger but have more stuff like this planned for the future
White Mountain is the easiest 14'er in California but it's still a 14er. Your ride even tougher as you couldn't readily acclimate to the elevation as you were starting from Big Pine at 4000 feet. I hope you give it another go when there's less snow and you can get a support truck up to the Barcroft gate. Hikers coming in from sea level often acclimate by spending a night at Grandview (8600') or at the gate (12,000'). Great video, brought back lots of memories of White Mountain.
I miss having this level of fitness but not that level of craziness ; ) Thanks for another banger Safa!
Friend is carefully planning, calculating, and measuring his nutrition….you show up with 2 plain water bottles and some donuts… I can relate 😆. That was entertaining to watch- thanks!
White Mountain! One of my favorites. Been many times over the years. There's a grove of Bristlecone Pines up high, with the oldest tree in the world.
There used to be an event 'White Mtn in a Day'. Started in Laws and went up Silver Canyon to the gravel White Mtn Rd, and then to the summit. Lower slopes of the canyon are about 8%, upper 3 miles are more like 18-20% (the idea of an 11% kicker is just adorable). All on a mtb. The gravel portion is intolerable, especially the miles of climbing on the way back. ...climbing on a descent after already cranking out 12,000' of elevation is just the worst.
And we're talking close to 30 years ago. 2-ish inches of fork travel, no rear suspension, and 26" wheels. Having bike swaps would be sooo much easier. ...not that any of that ride is easy.
Still one of my favorite epic rides. And still have the t-shirt.
That White Mountain in a Day was beyond epic. Thanks for mentioning it
Absolutely great adventure! Thanks for trying that one! California cyclists know those roads and have dreamed of doing that. 👍
I've been to Bristle Cone Pine forest a couple of times. Drove up there. It's pretty but beyond that point, it's even prettier. Thanks for taking us to the beyond on bikes. 👍👍
Beautiful ride. Thanks for taking us along.
It's nice to see Brian saffa'
A buddy and I went up the backside fire road to try and summit this beast many years ago on Gravel bikes. It's like 25% grade for the first 10 miles and links up to the road further up. Absolutely brutal. My friend was able to stay seated and inch up the climb but I'm a pretty big dude so it took 800 watts to just keep moving.
I ended up hiking the first 10 miles. Long story short we got separated and my friend called search and rescue as all my electronics died near the summit and I was out there really late.
Some random lady showed up on my deathmarch down the mountain and saved me, I was completely out of water and food and bonked. She was in some Nissan Xterra and I noticed her tire was leaking air. SO here I was in my cycling kit eating her chips and rolling around in the dirt changing her tire out in the middle of nowhere.
She gave me a ride down the 25% grade fireroad which was super scary. The sun was setting and I met back up with my riding bro in some park across from the bakery and he called off search and rescue and we had pizza. It was a hell of an adventure!
Liquid food for long runs is the best. Thank you for your work.
I go full maple syrup chug like super troopers
And the subtitles were great.
Absolutely incredible video. Thank you.
Thank You!! I'm so glad I couldn't sleep and got to see this great video!!!
I love speed corsa bicycle in road and downhil..and your video very beautiful..safa♥️
I go up there all the time, I will there this weekend as a matter of fact, Snow stays on the ground a long time up there so it's better go in August. All that being said, Chapeaux on the effort your truly inspiring. This is a beast of a mountain and as you get close to the top the air gets a whole thinner fast. Even hiking it is hard from the research station. Oh and just really mess you up, before the final bit to the summit you actually go down.... a lot; then you have to re climb - yeah that's super fun lol. My last time up was in May - looked very similar to what your situation was with the snow. Anything north of Patriarch cut off not passable, only thing to do was go down.
Lovely Video! Thanks for documenting this
Epic ride Brian, beautiful places for sure. Thanks for sharing!
Looks amazing dude
I really enjoyed this. Great idea. More vids like this please
We need more content like this.
@SAFABrian Wow, what a beautiful terrain/views and ride guys!!!
Amazing episode, thanks for sharing 🫡
👏Safa, Taylor, Alex!👏FANTASTIC VIDEO! I Applaud your Stamina! It brings it into perspective that i occationally ride up a chalk escarpment with 20% grade for a mile on a Pro Emtb on the Isle of Wight UK and think its hard at nearly 60 years old! I couldnt ride this trail if i was 20 years old! Thankyou Guys for a staggeringly Beautiful ride! In AWE of your talents! POSITIVE VIBES👍😁
Glad you enjoyed it! Keep the cranks spinning past 60!
Great video. Well done to both of you
Cool. Nice effort. i ride Bishop a couple weeks every year, and what you just climbed up is my favorite descent anywhere. Done it about 20 times and ive never not had a headwind on the way down thru the canyon. Too bad cuz over 60 is definitely possible… anyway, keep em coming cool vid!
BUISNESS UP FRONT, PARTY IN THE BACK!!! Safa Rules!
Thats a hell of a beasty!
Nice climbing, Safa!
I like having more context and discussions
I would love to see more adventure rides like this and not just ripping descents
I bought Hammerhead 3 because of you Safa.
It's a great bike computer. Hope it's working out for you.
Lovely video
Taylor coughing from the shortness of breath not the weed pen!!
Scenic
Love this channel but why have views dropped
hey pals, kudos in being epic climbing disciples
two guys, six bikes - thought this would be a different kind of video...
Rất đẹp và rất rất đẹp. Xin cảm ơn video tuyệt vời!!!❤❤
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Bomber nation 🎉
Need a rim brake bike for that climb.
I would like to know what chain lube(s) you used.
And if you needed to add lube and if so, how often.
Thanks, i have not watched the whole vid so i may be asking an unnecessary question.
Im surprised you two dont have Scott fat bikes.
Best ride ever. I’ve ridden to the visitor center several times on road bike….always wanted to go to top so thanks for the reality check.
What an adventure! And amazing production quality as always 💯
One question though; why did both of you choose to ride the Foil and not the Addict for the road climb?
The Foil is so light these days it's a pleasure to climb with. We were both planning on sending the descent which is why we wanted the Foils.
Great video. Why were you walking your MTBs rather than ride it on the side of the road? It looked quite doable unless I am missing something?
Same speed, uses less energy, removes chance of puncturing.
How far above the visitor center could you get away with a road bike and 28mm tires?
About 500 metres before you slash a tyre. Really really rough 'gravel'
0:35 That's barely 80 ppm private! Give me 100!!! 🤣
your friend's shirt, the one with tiger and japanese letters, you happen to know where did he get one?
It’s a Team Dream/The Cubhouse jersey. Out of LA.
Got to the middle before i realised he was speaking english ,not dutch
You guys did it the easy way!! You're supposed to climb Silver Canyon (10 miles/12% avg grade), then hit White Mountain Rd. The whole climb is 32 miles of gravel @ 6.2% avg grade. It's way tougher & way more epic than Bristlecone Pine. You guys really missed out...🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️
Add a fatbike with a front suspension to your arsenal on your next try!
Brians beard costs him like 20 Watt 😅
With that much of height difference between you two guys, why it seems you’re riding the same bike size-wise?
We're on very different size bikes. Size large for me, small for Taylor.
Вы крутышы.
If you're gonna be dumb, you gotta be tough.
Is that a heart rate monitor under your shirt? 🤔 Cool video, harsh stuff!
Microphone
Aah right, ok cheers
What are your sunglasses?
100%
Submitted 2022, started from the gate.
#pastries
why you vlogging now???
He's done many vlogging vids before - it just depends on what he wants to do. A bit if variety never killed anyone lol
doesn't Scott make a fat bike
Hy
Wondering if you are still sponsored by Pedal Mafia they scammed me out of a order
Parted ways years ago. I'm sorry to hear that.
