It's a good idea to absolutely cover the key that connects to the engine in grease so when the engine starts it kicks the lever out easier

Some good advice Curtis!! Just one thing I'll add. Make sure the tractor is out of gear before you do anything. I remember about 20 years ago a guy at a show was hand starting a old Allis Chalmers WC I think. Started up the first crank. He didn't get run over he kind of fell back and off to the side. He was able to jump back up fast enough to get it stopped. Probably went a good 25ft or so before it got stopped. Thankfully nothing was in its way.

Very true ! I should have mentioned that but I make it a habit to never leave anything in gear after I shut it off but I always check !

Wouldn't you be able to feel resistance when cranking if it was in gear?

@@wildman510 No not really because of the gearing. The engine rotates many many time before the tractor would even move a foot. With good compression, hot spark and the timing set properly these engines can start up without even one revolution. You figure too even a electric start tractor can start up being in gear. The battery and starter motor have no troubles getting everything going either.

Make sure your out of gear (neutral ) and go right over top dead center you won’t have any problems

I have a mystery engine that came with a sawmill and I am building a new crank for it how would you go about finding the position of the roll pin on the crank to interlock with the racket tabs on the engine
