Why different lines are run by different companies is beyond me...the worst thing you can do is completely privatize different sections of a transport system is beyond me, especially the size of the London Underground system.
I was in London several times this year. It's not a bad system. The people in the video look bad, but they don't know what's going on. The people jammed in the tunnel, where all the cursing is heard, well, those tunnels get stuffy and a person's first thought is, 'Why are they stopping us in this cramped spot instead of back where there is more room and more air?' All these problems should be handled two ways, first what they're already doing to manage the problem, but second is to educate people on how the Underground works. Peoples' first response will always be a knee jerk, "I just want to get home, I don't want to learn about how to run a subway." But they are interested, they spend a lot of time on it. It's always better to try to learn more. I was stuck on a Blueline platform in Los Angeles, with a growing crowd of people, and two British Train Drivers. When the train finally arrived, they said, 'Wait. There's always a second car within in 2-5 minutes and it'll be empty." They were right. I had a job once where if I left for it at 7:15, I would just make my 8 am start time, (45 minute stressful commute.) If I could leave just before 7, then I'd have 20-25 minute commute on a fast moving freeway, but then I'd have 30-35 minutes to hang out in the parking lot. So I'd read and drink coffee. I had to start parking at the far end of the lot because the new problem was trying to explain this to all the people who wanted to tell me that what I was doing was weird.
I hope these passengers realize the employees are only doing this to keep everyone moving and making things safe. If they don't close an exit and the station is overflowing, people can start falling onto the track.
Having had the good fortune to visit London many times, my experience with the English people have been very positive. They're friendly and helpful. The Underground is a great way to get around. There's lots to see and do in London and the tube makes it much easier. The station attendants and staff do a great job and increase the efficiency of the system. If you're in London for a couple days or more, purchase an Oyster card, which can be used for trains and buses. It's worth the cost and saves alot of time, and will make your visit more enjoyable;)))
When I was 5, I wanted to be a train engineer. But when I turned 7, and started riding the subways, I wanted to drive one of those; I would beg my mom to get us on the first car, so I could look out the front of the train and watch us go through the tunnels. But being an engineer wasn't good enough for my parents, and they strongly discouraged me from pursuing it. I wound up becoming a nurse. But to this day, I still love riding the trains, whether above or below the ground.

Well done great production so far. Lots of incredible insite detail on the wonderful, wacky and weird ever evolving world of the tube network. I don't think we have an underground network here in good old New Zealand. On a side note the " coming up" appearing gets a smile every time.
I like how the original documentary called "The Tube" was so calm and peaceful like the theme song. But this series is all chaotic and crazy compare the two and see the difference.
I cannot accept this "it's old technology" argument, or like the lady at the beginning says, "these trains are from 1973!". Because... the trains in Berlin were from the 1930s, until they were replaced in the early 2000s by new stock. And after *that* happened, things broke down. There are times when only half of the fleet is in operation. And something like this never happened with the old trains. I now see the same thing in the west of Germany, where I live. As soon as old trains are replaced by state-of-the-art ones, everything breaks down.
@@wuloki New stock fails a lot when it is introduced but one those problems are solve they usually run heaps better than the old ones. Old stock can't be relied on forever and it becomes a headache after 40 years.

1972 Tube stock? They look so well maintained! Have you ever seen the stock that BART uses? It's the same age but about ten times dirtier. They also make a horrible howling sound when they run at high speed, so loud you can't even chat with the guy sitting next to you.

He got a look on his face and said " madam, the tube is fine ". Well, I've never been called madam and I never had any one speak with that kind of tone. Gotta love em. I got on the subway!

Those who plan to travel in London avoid using the underground between 7:30AM and 10:00AM and especially the Central and Piccadilly line. That period the Underground is overcrowded, smelly especially during summer and everyone unwillingly press each other. Those who have to travel these hours is better to wait for two or three trains in order to find one with less passengers. Trust me some times during peak hours the frequency of trains is between 3 minutes to half a minute. Those who wait 3 minutes will enter a train full of passengers. Those who wait for the next maybe after half a minute will find a train with far less passengers. From my experience usually the first and the last cars of the underground trains have less passengers. Between 10:00AM and 3:00PM the underground is fine. After 4:00PM to 6:00AM the Underground is crowed but it is not hell like the morning rush hours. Some workers prefer a beer in a pub than returning directly home. Another piece of advise is to validate your ticket near an underground staff member who is always at the entrances and exits. Also always look behind you. Some people are pushing the passenger in front of them at the ticket barriers in order to avoid the ticket. I really really hate that. It had happened many times to me and others. Holborn station until 10AM the working days has only exit and no entrance.
Raoul Simon True, but London is worse, BECAUSE the stations are older, the platforms are smaller and narrower, and the infrastructure is more overwhelmed. The NYC Subway, crowded as it does get, can deal with higher capacities of people. Stations are larger, with wider concourses and platforms. Most Tube stations are only two narrow platforms, smaller, narrower concourses; steeper banked escalators because a lot of the Tube stations are deeper underground than NYC Subway stations. That’s why during WWII they used the Tube as bomb shelters during the blitz, because its very deep underground. I love London (and lived there for three years when I was growing up), but the Tube is a little scary when it’s super-crowded. That’s why when I have visited I try to ride either REALLY early between 6-7:30am, or between 11am-3pm or after 7pm. Between 7:30am-11am it’s chock-a-block ridiculous with morning commuters. 3-7pm; same thing with evening commuters. After that it’s better, unless there’s something going on like a football event, or it’s a major holiday. That’s when I would avoid the Tube altogether and just walk. And if ANYONE pushes me, I get VERY hostile in return (as I try to be considerate of others space), so if they think they’re going to avoid paying their fare by pushing me, think again. I will call you out. And if you try and get physical with me, you will get turned into transit police. I have NO TIME for that 💩.

Here in Hamburg, Germany, you don't see a single staff member anywhere on the underground. It's basically just the train drivers and some screens on the platform announcing stuff. If there's a strike or delay, people just yell into thin air or write angry tweets to the operator :D And if you need help with directions....well that's your problem. It's a much smaller underground system though and less people.

Vancouver is so lucky compared to my city. You guys have a reliable system. My system, the trains break down almost every day. Ours is known as the botched system. Also the snow doesn't "break" it, it's just a safety measure cause the snow is too heavy so the system thinks that there's a person.
I think these guys working for the Tube ARE bloody Saints! So much pressure and they cope with a smile! I did this in melbourne by putting small flaps on hinges with springs on the edge of every step.. The people could not step up step to step and had no choice but to wait to get to the top. such a easy fix

I think trains can still be brought in and out of the branch line but the power has to be switched on manually or something. If the Holborn rebuild goes ahead then the branch line will probably become inactive, even as a film set, because they want to use one of the Aldwych platforms as a new passenger concourse.
There is a track connection, which is how it got to the depot, since they couldn't maintain the train on the branch. They also used different trains, at least 4-car 72 trains, and 3-car 73 trains. The 3-car 73s now run on the piccadilly, and that's why you sometimes see the third or fourth carriage of a piccadilly line train have a cab.
I get people need to be places but for me after school wen i wana go home if i miss a train its 30 minutes its not that long but a new train every 2 minutes during Rushhour on one line like id wait 2 or 3 traines so its not that full i dont get why people would squeeze on if u only loose 2 minuts

The people who made the documentary wouldn't put normally behaved people in it though, wouldn't be "entertaining". It is rare to see this horrid behaviour on the tube. The documentary is showing us when it all goes wrong, not on a normal day lol
TFL doesnt have the money too. In fact cus of corona they are relying more and more on the government because before most their income came from fares.
Japan and the uk are way too diffrent to be comparing. Especially when you consider the tokyo metro is more subsurface compared to over half of the tube being deep level which gives diffrent enviroments to work around.
Don’t feel bad about the Piccadilly Tube Stock being so old. In New York we’ve had to reactivate our 1960’s era R32 trains (some of the oldest subway trains in the world) cause the new stuff R179 fleet keeps having glitches and the older cars are still reliable.

our subway in Toronto, Canada is so old they (TTC) have to close part of it most weekends so they can try to do some repairs

I think trains can still be brought in and out of the branch line but the power has to be switched on manually or something. If the Holborn rebuild goes ahead then the branch line will probably become inactive, even as a film set, because they want to use one of the Aldwych platforms as a new passenger concourse.
There is a track connection, which is how it got to the depot, since they couldn't maintain the train on the branch. They also used different trains, at least 4-car 72 trains, and 3-car 73 trains. The 3-car 73s now run on the piccadilly, and that's why you sometimes see the third or fourth carriage of a piccadilly line train have a cab.

At least during rush hours you cam get in a queue at canary wharf so nobody pushes you out and you can wait 5-6 train and hop into your carriage

As for the escalator plan, they could just send a staff on to it to stop the flow on the left. Then you see results straight away.

I get people need to be places but for me after school wen i wana go home if i miss a train its 30 minutes its not that long but a new train every 2 minutes during Rushhour on one line like id wait 2 or 3 traines so its not that full i dont get why people would squeeze on if u only loose 2 minuts

Agreed! Just got back from Japan and no such problems... with way more bodies.
Japan and the uk are way too diffrent to be comparing. Especially when you consider the tokyo metro is more subsurface compared to over half of the tube being deep level which gives diffrent enviroments to work around.
Let this be a reminder to all watching.

Don’t feel bad about the Piccadilly Tube Stock being so old. In New York we’ve had to reactivate our 1960’s era R32 trains (some of the oldest subway trains in the world) cause the new stuff R179 fleet keeps having glitches and the older cars are still reliable.
