It is strange to have three white guys moderated by an Indian to discuss Asia outlook. What they share are basically no different from those you get from the Western mainstream media. Typical armchair experts! We should expect better from Asia Society.
That woman rubbed me all the wrong ways. She sounds so concerned about democratic backsliding and opression of muslims while so conveniently ignoring that all countries that US, its allies (global north) have invaded, continue to invade, in the last 3-4 decades are all muslim countries. Its not India that recently vetoed the resolution to stop killing muslim civilians. Lets also remember how much of a concern democracy was when US supported and forced others to support dictators for their own agenda. Its not India where the incumbent refuses to accept election results. Its not india where you need the courts to convince people that ballots work and there is no fraud in elections. It is however in India where muslims, almost as many as the entire population of US, exercise their democratic rights regularly. The Pew research reports after the last national elections said that muslims feel free to practice their religion and customs in India, and India outperforms US, the bastion of freedom 🙄, on that count. I wonder if she ignorant or simply lazy
I wonder if any of these “experts” ever visited any of the Asian countries? I would like to see a historical reports of these “Experts” batting average. Economists the only job in the world where you can fail all the time and still keep your job. Thank God these people did not chose to be surgeons.
China IS reforming its economy. No more unsustainable investment on property sector, cracking down on property speculation that fuel the pockets of developers at the expense of average consumers who can't afford housing. No more free wheeling deregulation for the tech giants like Alibaba and Tencent that let them grew into giants they are today at the expense of smaller start ups and consumers. It is painful, but necessary transformation.
I was watching this program in the middle the way I’ll kind of a killer thinking about it now we talk by Aja how common is a bunch of Western or white people is talking about Asia. They should be talk about Europeans problem resignation problem, Asia Providence to Asian is that correct?
Especially with the development of AI, it seems the military superiority will be determined chiefly by technological superiority. If the U. S. To keep its military superiority, it needs to attract the best scientific minds from the rest of the world and strengthen its public-private partnership in technological development.
This panel of experts is very informative and in many repsects fairly objective. However, very few foreign experts know China well enough, possibly because Chinese policies and strategies are not that transparent to the outside world.
Conversely, what news or information you can receive in the western world about China? In fact, I am a normal citizen in Hong Kong. In the eyes of reporters, the HK government suppressed demonstrators in 2019, the execution of national security law is a violation of human rights. But to most of Hong Kong people, the so called peaceful demonstrations were never mild or gentle, but full of violence and devastation, and even destruction. And to be honest, they were never necessary. We are happy that the land we have been living is now undergoing recovery. Strange and weird, people, sorry, governments in the west are happier than us, happier to levy sanctions on Hong Kong and Chinese government. Please take more time to search more realistic information. Don't wholly rely on the information your government wants you to know.
@@Malachi1972 Dear Friend, I am also from HK. Born 1949. I have witnessed the development of both HK and China My thinking is much in line with yours. I studied modern Chinese history and have special access to top officials both in HK and China. Some of my family members and friends took part in the demonstration and unfortunately none of them knew what they are doing, they did not study history, not political systems. When they protested against the expatriation law, they did not even study what the law said. One of them was a professor in the University. I hope things will become better in HK.
Sidney has a monolithic view (kept saying she does not understand Indonesia, or Vietnam or Myanmar etc) … well it is clear she does not have full grasp of Asean sensitivities and should not be an “expert” in Asean .. we have enough Asean experts and it is disappointing to put a speaker that appear not to live in Asean … she has a skewed view about Russia too (given the fact she speaks to Ukrainian ambassador) and not to Russian ambassador … (it shows the skewness of her view) … plenty of good Asean speakers (Marty, Gita, Thais, etc)

Yea, agreed. This was shit for a panel discussion. I'm appalled

My goodness.... Paul Sheard must have been locked in solitary confinement. I hope his wife has noise cancelling earmuffs at dinnertime.🙄

One thing Sidney said is true is : if trump comes back, the occurrence of islamophobic and Asian hatred incidents may increase again ….
