    BK arguments are flawed. He argued that Asia is not one bloc and, therefore, the term Asian century shouldn't be used. But he conveniently accepted the term European century when all the small European countries had their differences. He claimed that Asian nationalism is another reason there will not be an Asian century. But he failed to menton that the European and American centuries were not smooth. There were world wars and hot and cold wars.
    Quoting Deng who was leader in the 80s does not paint what is happening now. If we want to be more geographically correct, we can call it the East Asian century

    • @busybeenick

      He used the example of European century to illustrate the problem of conceptually locating a century within a geographical context. I would hesitate to argue that he accepts the terms european & american centuries

    Kausikan is the most compelling and nuanced observer of the "Asian" geopolitical reality and straight shoots the historical factual narrative, as well as the plausible future outcomes facing all the countries involved. Unlike other celebrated commentators of the East-West geoeconomic/political struggle, Kausikan is NO LACKEY to the U.S. or CCP agenda and instead gives an honest and rigorous assessment of tactics, strategy and rationale of the individual political actor's. Brilliant man. Amazing English language communicator.

    Thank you so much to the Asia Society for bringing Bilahari Kausikan to make such a great "State of Asia Address" to be presented! However, as great as his assessment of Asia (in the world) today is, I would love to hear him (and others) talk about what we should expect will happen among all the people in Asia (and the world) if China attacks Taiwan, or maybe, what we (the world and others in Asia) should do to prepare, assuming that it will? For example, shouldn't we be planning on how to evacuate people who might want to leave, and start preparing in other Asian countries (or elsewhere) for where evacuees will be having to go?

    • @minloo3219
      @minloo3219 9 месяцев назад

      The Taiwan storyline is an US narrative to provoke China into a arm conflict which allow US to advantance it containment strategy on China to prevent China's overtaking the US economy. The western main stream media are part of the scheme to make the western world believe that China is the devil and US is the saivor. If that is the case, US shall plan for an evacuation strategy in event of the attack.

    Continuous self-corrections lead to a constant shifting of policies as the government changes every 4-5 years. It's time to address the obvious issue - people, by nature, often prioritize short-term self-interest, contributing to perpetual flip-flops in policy. The USA, for example, experiences persistent stalemates, indicative of a political abilene paradox.

      Kishore and Bilahari's views can be both correct and incorrect, either at different times or at the same time. This schrodinger's cat nature shows just how dynamic and fluid international relations can be, or may perhaps, has always been.
      I would not rush to dismiss Kishore outright though. Both persona comes from the same nation, holding the same job as their nation's representative to the UN.
      I do however feel that both Kishore and Bilahari's views are important for the present and the next generation. After all, both of their assertions came from their experience as diplomats.
      Kishore outlines this dream that drives the passion of SEA nations, whereas Bilahari outlines the challenges and rules the nations would need to be mindful about, in their bid to make this century theirs, if they so aspire to.

    Listening to the presentation is akin to reading a Masteral thesis.😢 It's a collection of quotes from experts peppered with the presenter's sporadic opinion, which of course he is entitled to. I still maintain that the future is Asian, and it's not because of China but because it's fated to be. It's the natural progression of things.

    I don’t think it’s a simple case of democracy (in its present form, as I don’t think democracy can only be expressed in one single form) vs authoritarian. An “authoritarian” system that is meritocratic, not personality-centric, forward-looking & adaptive with a robust accountability system might conceivably works better than the current guise of democratic system

    • @darthvader4209
      @darthvader4209 9 месяцев назад

      Your last sentence is simply based on hope and pure wishful thinking. Thousands of years of history have shown us that no authoritarian system stays forward-looking & adaptive with robust accountability. An authoritarian system has never evolved with the times, and almost always need a violent revolution to bring about a change in rule finally

    Some of his content are biased anti-China narrative that seems irrelevant to the thesis (13: 12-17.45, 46.31-48.00)
    1. Blaming China for the active disputes in the east, south China sea and Taiwan. He failed to put in context that US and its allies’ war ships/planes traveled thousands of miles to maneuver along China coastline. How will US reaction if China warships frequent its coastline?
    2. Blaming China for creating global anxieties that led to the formation of QUAD and AUKUS to counter. He choose to ignore that in first place US surrounded China with 300 military bases for decades. QUAD and AUKUS are just addition to the same strategies to contain China.
    3. China's has flawed political structure. Its state-controlled economy will continue to limit and slow China’s economy. A half century old China dooms day theory that proven wrong time and again.
    4. Blaming China for the long running China-India border dispute and China always initiated the bloody border scrimmages. There are plenty of public evidence to prove otherwise.

      Why does the US and the Allies war ships is passing through the Straits of Taiwan? To prevent an invasion. Why is China drawing a nine-dash line in this region? I feel Mr Bilahari Kausikan was being far too polite when he criticized China. Not only China is creating tension in this region, it is also supporting Russia in the invasion of Ukraine. Furthermore, China is supporting the Tailiban to mistreat the women in Afghanistan.

If one persists to see the worse (worst?) in something, one’s actions will likely invite a reaction that is self-fulfilling
