Such a great artist and a great human being. I would love to talk with her about the current Met... the whole Levine thing and the current crop of singers who are getting 'brava' shouts after a big aria, but clearly have a serious wobble in their voice: oscillating between two different pitches on every note longer than 2 beats. So sad. Marilyn is a gem. Got to hear her in a recital at the Meyerson Symphony Center in Dallas maybe 2-3 years after this interview. Sublime.
So true that modern day audiences seem to have no idea of what constitutes great singing. There has to be great talent around as in all.decades but it must be the teaching that’s at fault. Of course there are some great artists now but far too many sub standard that receive undeserved praise. Maria Callas was right all those years ago when she predicted that opera was a dying art.
Thanks for the inspiration and brutal honesty, delivered without pretentiousness. In this difficult Covid-19 time when performing opportunities are mostly closed for many of us, this is a shot of positivity to keep us going.
Your favorite and you don't know if she's alive or not? Sorry, but that's...peculiar, to say the least. She is still here - luckily. Too many of great opera stars have left us and this world too early. Still mourning Pavarotti...

Interesting! He is within his " USofA Forever!" comfort zone interviewing about USA politics. Not about Hornes singing career! Reads from a script , totally without empathy with Horne A really amatuer effort! Totally out of his depth interviewing Dame Joan, where his effort is even more amateur! .The limp interviewer is so much more animated with a USA personality. Demonstrably uncomfortable with Dame Joan. Why be surprised? ..fortress USA ...unless its Yank , they are ignorant!
Trust me she's quite nasty. My beloved voice teacher, the late, Chloe Owen was doing a 75th birthday recital and I contacted Ms. Horne's assistant and asked if she would ask Ms. Horne to say something. I wanted to surprise Chloe. Her assistant responded with I only met her once. My teacher had more of a European Career and she was a consummate artist. She never really gained notoriety here in the states our loss. How I wish she would have an opportunity to record The Four Last Songs of Richard Strauss but to see her the intellect, depth and artistic integrity remarkable. Chloe could be mercurial and I'm sorry to say she didn't think most men were competent. Feel free to search the web there's a recording of her singing Alban Bergs Seven Early Songs and one of her singing in a Bach work. Impeccable diction. In short My. Horne knew who Chloe was. Not at all gracious in my opinion. Blessings all.
You seem rather obsessed with this Chloe woman, going so far as to make comments about an unknown soprano on videos of Brahms Alto Rhapsody. There are thousands of aspiring singers who didn't make it and if she is so amazing there would be documentation out there. In the rambling, sub-literate tale you tell at no point to you offer no detail about Ms. Horne's supposed nastiness. Maybe, you ARE Chloe Owen?
I had my own run in with her 6 years ago. If you brown nose her, she will do something for you. Her assistant screwed me over and lied right to my face. She supports a group of people who have enslaved blacks and a President who has no morals, values and is wanting to tear us down. You have to be careful who you put up on a pedestal.
I have had the opposite experience with Ms. Horne ...and with her former assistant Anna. She was very gracious and approachable to me when I was only a wanna be singer.
Jeez. People like you can NEVER just be happy with wonderful art. You are the very definition of a fucking douche bag. I bet you're a real hit at parties. Get your pathetic face slapped much?
You reveal yourself as a sorry, bitter malcontent when you slam a great artist with an unfounded politically-oriented jab. You’re in serious need of some humanity and grace.
Marilyn Horne and Eileen Farrell (RIP) were the most down to earth major American divas of their generation. No hauteur, no artifice, no airs.

Holy cow, she’s is so charming and enchanting. Very regal
Love Marilyn Horne’s speaking voice. It’s so commanding, but calming. Like, when you hear Kurt Moll speaking.
Happy 89th birthday to Ms. Horne......January 16 2023!
She is 90 soon
Marilyn Horne is a true operatic icon.
Great testimony for every aspiring, in career, retreated etc... performers. 👍
My favorite mezzosoprano was also a down to earth, beautiful human being.
Shes still with us

I loved her appearance on the 'Odd Couple' in 1974.She played Carmen in a play put on by Felix. It's a must see.
One of the greatest singers of all time....and probably my favorite voice of all time. Love you Ms. Horne!
Joking?. She is outstanding! But greatest of all time? Well, guess you are a yank! Usual insular vision!

Because Rose is one of the worse interviewers !!!!!

Nice of him to stay completely dressed.
Maybe afterwards😝.

Did you know her personally? Hard to judge on an interview!
Talking about him maybe?
I’ll try to ignore the fact she’s a democrat.
That's funny...you know, it's not surprising that musicians are democrats. We are humanists after all. Do the math.
Rosario Cicero: And people will ignore that you’re alive.
She never even mentioned Sutherland .
mickthemike well it is an interview about Marilyn so...
There have been plenty where Sutherland didn’t mention her. Lols
She has talk about Sutherland many times.
She wasn't asked about Sutherland.
In another interview, she very humbly says that Sutherland was the main attraction and that she was the +one
