I'm playing 50 years now, did countless shows, played and even produced and engineered numerous albums and I'm still learning and practicing every day even though I can improvise well. Your are never good enough.
I couldn't agree more that's why I personally don't use words like mastering or even expert in relation to guitar (I used it in the video title because It's what the author used that popularized the idea) Thanks for watching & commenting
Play to enjoy, I’ve learned walking away for a while gives you the want to play feeling. You can master foreign scales theoretically creating interesting lines. But at the end of the day even the best of the best enjoy playing pentatonics. Simple blues lines playing + -. G min blues is great, you have a B - Major scale starting on the 8th fret in the centre of the neck. Visually easy. Theoretically complicated for a beginner. But very rewarding for a small amount of effort.
I definitely agree people should play what they enjoy. 👍& for a ton of people that is primarily pentatonic scales especially if what you enjoy is blues, classic rock & classic metal (& I played a lot of that when I started out in 1982). But there are also a lot of people that love classical, Jazz, neoclassical metal, Etc. & they need to play a lot more then pentatonic to be able to play what they enjoy (personally I love playing diatonic scales, arpeggios, and exotic scales along with pentatonic so I do it not because I need to but because it's what I enjoy) 😊thanks for watching & commenting
Hope you guys liked the video 🤘 Check out my other videos on improvising, licks, arpeggios, chords, original pieces, practical theory, scales Etc. Thanks 🙂please click like, subscribe, comment, share so the algorithm will give my channel more views 👍
You've posted a number of videos that I have gotten a lot of mileage outta. I truly am grateful for that and all the wisdom you've shared. Don't like to say what I'm gonna do ...but do what I think I have to and then more satisfied talking about my achievements than my aspirations if that makes any sense. Guitar is a beast and I know one thing, use it or loose it. 🙂
Fully agree. I started guitar few months ago. I mostly pratice 95 % of my time with a metronome (1 H day) and when i play music it’s better and better although i rarely play music. Deep work is the dark side of the moon.
thanks for watching & the comment 👍if you've been playing just a few months I think videos on this playlist would help you (you can watch them out of order just find the ones that interest you) it covers fundamentals including chords, notes on the neck, scales, practice tips, practical theory, Etc. Yeah playing in front of people is good whatever level you're at it only makes you better (even if what you learn from it is you need more practice😊) thanks for commenting & watching👍
The best practice is playing . Play because you like to play , not because you have to practice . Either you have it or you don't . Just play and turn off the mind , which is the exact opposite of practising . The sub-conscious is a better learner than the conscious awareness of practice . The subconscious is where creativity resides , together with a vast library of music you heard . Let the subconscious do the work , it's better at it . You walk better when you walk without thinking of walking . Old Chinese proverb .
I completely agree clearing your mind is best if you're trying to improvise, perform be creative or even just sound good. I did a video on this topic actually called playing vs practicing ruclips.net/video/VubVDUtYgG8/видео.html But to progress quickly I believe you also need focused practice time in which you work on things you struggle with paying attention to your technique, timing, Etc. & also where you learn new things. It's like athletes they don't just go out & play their sport everyday (at least not at professional or Olympic levels) they have focused practice sessions then on gameday they clear their minds, relax & let the good practice that they've ingrained into their subconscious take over anyways thanks for watching & commenting 👍
As an engineer I am very suspicious of round numbers. That’s always a spit ball. And don’t forget the 80/20 rule. You will get most of the benefits up front then spend a lot of time getting the rest.
Yeah & to make this even less accurate of a guess it's not an estimate of an individual looking at their practice habits, skills, Etc. but a generalized guess that is being applied to everyone. Like trying to say how long it will take to build any building not a specific one there are way too many variables to be accurate. Thanks for watching & commenting 👍
I'm going to link a video I did on avoiding injuries. But It's mostly about using good technique (using natural/relaxed positions that don't add strain), taking regular breaks, listening to your body, I also in the video talk about warm ups, flexibility, showing bad habits to avoid, Etc. Thanks for watching/commenting ruclips.net/video/sv6Ozn1Aex8/видео.html
@ericnaylorguitar Thanks. Some time ago, I practised acoustic guitar, ignoring the discomfort in my arm, and ended up with tendinitis. Very, very painful and lasted about 2 years ! I now want to start again but fo not want to go through the same experience again. I'll watch your video! 🙂👍
Yeah check out the video if you still have any questions just leave a comment on the video & yeah injuries suck (between 35 years in martial arts & home improvement projects I've had a ton of them)
I would say learn at whatever age you can I've had students that started in their 70s & personally I'm still learning new things all the time (& I'm 58). But having said that their are things that children have an easier time with. One example perfect pitch (which even most professional musicians do not have) is almost always developed at a young age. So definitely go for it if you work hard you can become good at any age🤘👍

@@ericnaylorguitarthank you very much. A whole universe to discover. Best regards
Agree about not obsessing over getting licks exactly right. Doesnt matter.
Playing in front of people live will speed you up considerably more!
