Had a 5s before I switched to Samsung and holy hell this phone was my favorite. Went back to using it for a few weeks about a year ago and the buttons were SO tiny, especially the keyboard lol going back to using it after using a note 5 for 2 years was a huge difference and fun experience
The same thing happened where the glass below the home button cracked when my iPhone 5 was being Worked on by some guy in the mall. Super cheap and bad.

I just bought a MINT condition iPhone 5s 16GB Gold running iOS 8.3 for $60. This was my best offer, as the phone was originally costing $66. I had no idea what iOS it was on at the time of purchase, so I got super lucky! I won’t be updating this phone, as it’s great for my collection.
check out ifixit, they have great repair guides. I use their guides but also videos i find on youtube if I need to see something in huge detail. I repair phones and do it well and I started a few months ago by doing this.
I've found that buying Activation Locked iPhones are a great way to buy parts. You obviously can't use the Logic Board, or the Home Button if you care about TouchID, but you can use everything else
Would be great the see the 5s body be fully stainless steel, but have the rear middle that currently Is aluminum be switched to glass for wireless charging, and where the glass strips are have that be the stainless with the rest of the frame. Would make for a sturdy phone. Then update it to all screen like the newer iPhones.

there is no reason not to update your devices. ALWAYS update because of security features eg. facetime bug. It also gives you new features and especially in the case of ios 12 makes your iphone faster. I understand that you may want to keep it on it's original version of ios but only if you're not going to use it.

I think you should update this iPhone 5s to iOS 12 because it runs a lot faster. My 5s on iOS 11.4 scored 2215 on Geekbench and after the iOS 12 update scored 2261
iOS 12 stuffed up my iPad Air 1s screen; it just let goes randomly when I press and hold, which is really irritating since most games require pressing and holding.

My iphone 4s was jailbroken in ios 9.3.5 but something went wrong and it got stuck in a boot loop. I restored it to ios 6.1.3 then updated it to ios 8.4.1 and it works fine but, whenever i try to update it back to ios 9.3.5 i get an error '29'. Any advice?
My mom has an iPhone SE,and she got it from her work with ios 10 and I kept telling her not to upgrade it!. She will be getting a new phone soon so that means I get her old one. I've actually had the opposite problem with aftermarket screens. The glass doesnt break, but it separates from the lcd.

At least you can run all the latest apps on iOS 12. And iOS 12 on the SE is still pretty fast, nevertheless.
