  • Baker's Gas pulls out a 1988 Miller Electric Thunderbolt to compare it to the newer and much lighter Thunderbolt 160! We weld with both and do a complete unboxing and review. 110/220 power portable stick machine is affordable and small. (certainly smaller than they used to make them) Performs well for 6011, 6013, and 7018! We run a few welds and talk about the performance, value, and show what is included and how to set up.
Hot Start technology means quick and reliable starts every time.
    120V -- up to 3/16

In 30 more years, the new Miller will have needed a circuit board and various other sensitive electronics replaced and the old transformer welder will still be going strong.

I bought a new Miller Thunderbolt in 1980 and I have hard faced farm equipment, built farm implements, built bumpers and hitches and just run the guts out of it until I got my first SA 200 pipeliner and then I have had 2 different Miller Bobcats since with the last one I bought new in 2006 and I run a Lincoln LN 25 suitcase on my bobcat. I only ever overheated that thunderbolt one time while hardfacing a backhoe bucket running 5/32 rod hot, it was a good old machine and I still have it in a shed at my farm. I’m currently working on getting me a Miller 220 for my retirement machine.

In 32 years the new unit WILL NOT BE WORKING.... The transformer outlives inverter machines about 4 to 1 but I like the weight of my inverter machine. I have a Syncrowave 250 I bought 15 years ago that I am certain will outlive me.

would love to see there esab 181i vs the thunderbolt 160. I have a feeling the esab will out weld it, especially on 6010 ? 1988 machine still welds very good, also looks like it was abused.

Thanks for the video, would love to see what it could do on 120v, that is after all, one of the main reason people are looking to buy this particular model, well, besides the compact size and low weight wink😉.

I sold my old Thunderbolt 225 this spring, ( sold same day I put it up for sale got, $275 for it ) People still want the old beast. I think mine was 1985, the front face slightly different. Good machine but it kept blowing my 240v circuit when I went over 150 amps, a pain at times. I had a 40 amp breaker which was not enough. I stepped up a bit with my new machine ( Fronius 180) because it has pulse stick , does 6010/6011 as well and weighs about the same as the new Miller and draws max 24 amps at full draw. No more tripped breaker. The old 225 Thunderbolt still is a good solid machine , looks like the new Thunderbolt 160 is going to work well and the price is really good, beats all those imports from China for very little more $$$.

I need to weld some fence clips on to continuous panels out in the pasture. I am a complete beginner and was wondering if the new Thunderbolt 160 would be enough welder to do that? Also is my 4000 watt generator sufficient to power it? According to a pdf on Miller website it would be enough but was curious if anyone had real world reviews.
