Place the probe in the midline in transverse orientation.
Locate the splenic vein and portal confluence.
The pancreas is anterior to the splenic vein and portal confluence.
Angle the probe forwards and backwards to thoroughly scan the pancreas.
The pancreatic head will be in the left half of the image (towards liver) and the tail will be in the right half of the image (towards spleen)
Rotate the probe 90 degrees clockwise to scan in longitudinal plane.
Use the left lobe of liver as a window to scan the pancreas.
If there is difficulty in locating the pancreas, roll the patient in a left lateral decubitus position to move bowel gases away from the pancreas.
Filling the stomach with water also helps in locating the pancreas.
