  • In this narrowboat vlog, we turn onto the rarely navigated 16ft Drain and wild moor for a week. We spend part of our journey on this stretch just drifting. To find out why: sit back, relax and enjoy our mindful cruise along this unique waterway. Take care x

    The boat next to me grows chillies all the time on his boat. Never been down that drain, loved the thought of just drifting down the river inspired idea as there was no one about!

    Hi Vanessa.. hope you are all ok .. lovely shots of the Brown Hares enjoying the day ..
    When I heard you say your drifting , it reminded me of a time I was fishing The Thames
    And a narrow boat came drifting past me with not a soul on board heading for a weir pool,
    So I quickly cast a line out and hooked the rope it was trailing from the bow end and managed to
    Get hold of the rope and stop it .. I then re- tied it to a tree and went back to my fishing ..
    You can just imagine the look on the boaters faces when they saw their narrow boat 200 metres from where they left it .. I told them the story and they were just so thankful ..they gave me a nice bottle of wine
    Which was nice .. anyway thanks for your very welcome videos ..I enjoy them very much ..oh yes and the 67 lodges next to fishing lakes sounds wonderful ..think I will look into that .. sounds right up my street..thank you..
    Michael 🐕🆒

      Wow! It’s so lucky you were there to stop that boat ending up in the weir! So much for fishing being a relaxing activity!😄 I thought you’d like the idea of lodges overlooking fishing lakes!🐠🐟🐡🎣 Thank you for your lovely comment, Michael!🦋🌻

    Thanks again. Your beautiful films about the Middle Level are recording my everyday reality. There are a few of us who use the Sixteen Foot. Mooring on the drain has always been hazardous given the steep and often slippery banks. I wear the scars to prove it from the time my gangplank slipped and I went in up to my neck at Stonea. I’m intrigued that you note the Skylark “rural mooring” was built by the Gowlers and Fox Narrowboats. There was no acknowledgement of either on the MLC website last time I looked. I was under the impression that the new “rural moorings” were commissioned and constructed by the Commissioners. Thanks for giving the credit where it’s due.

    • @themindfulnarrowboat
      @themindfulnarrowboat  2 года назад +1

      Thank you so much for your lovely comment and how awful that you fell in the drain and have scars to prove it! I’m so pleased to hear that boaters use this stretch of water though as I really enjoyed walking to the garden centre and I absolutely loved the brown hares! Now in terms of the history of the mooring, I read that piece of information when I was researching about Skylark and the garden centre, but it might not be completely accurate although it made a lot of sense to me that a boat hiring company and a place of interest would see the benefit of putting in a spot for visitors? Let me know if you find out otherwise though. I hope you are managing to stay warm and dry! Take care🌻🦋

    Lovely. The pear desert looks yummy. Ice to see you exploring the sort of off pist waterways. What makes it the 16 foot drain? I live in the Lincolnshire fens and we have 40 foot drains which refers to the width of the original works - forty feet between the tops of the banks. Yours look decidedly wider than that. Thank you again for a super vlog. So restful. Take care yourself and yours and do have a great new year.

    • @themindfulnarrowboat
      @themindfulnarrowboat  2 года назад +2

      I bet the drains are pretty where you are. I am not sure exactly what the 16ft refers too as it was wider than that and I can’t seem to find the answer on the internet? The answer is somewhere…I shall keep looking.🧐 Happy New Year, MegaYosarian!🦋🌻🥳

    You are right about the lack of flow, that was a pond skater that you showed. I just watched this having come from an american couple vlogging about walking through english pick your own centres and associated footpaths and hoping that they didn't encounter a muntjack! Mind you! strange sounding "vampire" deer weird or what. Go With The Flow!

You definitely see a wide range of wild life on your travels l love the small muntjac deers that hide against the hedge rows, Thanks again take care till next week🙂xx

    A nice way to spend the day just drifting along the canal. I think your hares are rabbits by the way. Their legs and ears look too short for hares.

    • @themindfulnarrowboat
      @themindfulnarrowboat  4 месяца назад

      Thank you so much for your lovely comment. I'll have to go back and look at the hares again.I always look for black tips at the end of the ears to tell me that they're hares. Take care 🦋🌻

    • @diggers92
      @diggers92 4 месяца назад

      @@themindfulnarrowboat Hares have a somewhat leggy, gangly look about them as they move about, whereas Rabbits are a bit more bouncy. Rabbits usually have darker eyes than Hares too. They can be difficult to tell apart though.
      The curry soup looked delicious!

    What a beautiful way of life. I am curious what you do to maintain steerage of the boat when drifting. Do you have electric thrusters or anything? We don't have anything like your canals nearby but I love taking my jonboat up the backwaters of our 22000 acre lake to bird watch.

    • @themindfulnarrowboat
      @themindfulnarrowboat  8 месяцев назад

      When it drifted on the drain, it just went with the wind which is why we felt it was safe to do that there as it was a calm day, on a straight stretch with absolutely no other boats. I wouldn't do that on purpose in many situations. Some boats have bow thrusters ( ours are broken) and that means that a quick button-press would keep the boat centre, if it started veering. Thank you for your lovely comment. Take care🌻🦋

    Hi Vanessa, Great video as always 👌. Do you know why it is called “The 16 foot drain” ? Is the water 16ft deep???

    • @themindfulnarrowboat
      @themindfulnarrowboat  5 месяцев назад

      I think it's because it is 16ft across but I'm not 100% sure of that? Thank you so much for your lovely comment. Have a super rest of the week. Take care 🦋🌻

    Wow! I've driven alongside the 16ft so many times and never seen a boat of any description on it - but always thought it looked a perfect option. How did you get on it Vanessa? Via Popham Eau or a different route? I so enjoy your travels - thank you.

    • @themindfulnarrowboat
