I worked at Walmart as a cartpusher and these thunderstorms are all too familiar we were ordered to get all carts in before the storm hit and the managers would send out workers from receiving to help get carts in and then I parked the cart machine and had to stay inside til the storm was over then the real fun started getting the cart machine keys and remote starting the cart machine up and going back out to clean up all the carts left everywhere playing catch-up there are many cons then pros with being a cart pusher at Walmart you gotta know how to dress for the weather keep extra clothes in your car and rain gear because no matter the weather Walmart don't care your gonna be out there 8 hrs a day keeping both garages full on carts plus everything else they want you to do clean up trash replace the flag when it gets ripped or worn plus do stuff inside when your not busy doing carts reshops helping receiving with frozen dairy truck oh yes all this for $11 hr total bull crap plus you will be lucky to get help when your backed up on carts and the parking lots a mess if you ask for help on the walkie talkie 90% of the time you get told we have nobody to send out but if there's a big storm coming oh yes Managers order people to go out and help get carts in .
@@TimeBunny I work for Meijer and our store has a backup generator but the shit-kicker is they don't operate the coolers or freezers. If our power outage lasts too long and we're not able to secure product to a refrigerated trailer (if we even have one on site), we end up losing it. I've been in the store several times now when the power failed and usually it kicks back on within ten seconds or so on emergency power. Believe me, it's not fun for us when the power fails and doesn't immediately return on normal lines.

the answer is because this country is huge, hundreds of millions of people require electricity and feeding power to that many people underground is not feasible due to geological challenges of the subsurface. Underground power lines are also much more expensive, require much more work/maintenance and again they can’t go everywhere like over ground lines can
One word:Money It's easier to maintain and fix/repair ppower systems when you don't have to dig 10-50 feet underground to find the wires then fix a fault. There's also less potential for something bad do happen. (explosions above ground aren't super destructive. If one happens underground, it can collapse an entire building in the absolute worst case.)
Hey when I went to watch a Soccer game in July 21 2019 there was a lighting and it was windy and the servers weather is thunderstorm watch and I went inside of a car it was raining very hard and lots of lightning and everybody is out side and when it’s evening there was a last lighting and at night it’s cloudy sky and I had a best day of 2019 ever :D and every body is at my house to party with barbecue and we Celebrate a team who won and I think it’s a best day of 2019
That last lightning strike was a positive bolt, and dang was that one close. I definitely wouldn't attempt reaching my vehicle at that point.

No, there was a breaker that was tripped, somebody reset it and the lights came back on, Plus, the lights have generators.
A lot of stores do have generators just in case power does go out during a bad storm or during bad winds and they will turn on automatic.

I think most major supermarkets chains in most countries have them for emergency power, mainly to keep chilled and frozen goods from spoiling.
