My dear friend, Thank you for this footage. My Father was posted to India during the war and when the war was over we moved back to UK and my parents lived in Leigh on sea. I was four years old and we stayed there for three years . We lived half way up Church Hill in one of the Fisherman's Cottage and I was so pleased when you turned your camera to look along each of the little lanes as you climbed up the hill. Sure enough I spotted our home and could see my bedroom window. You have brought back quite a few memories for me. I used to walk up the hill every evening to wait for my Dad to come home from work. He worked for an engineering Company called Moulin Rouge and on Saturdays I would go to the Church yard and collect mushrooms. I also clearly remember going over the old Railway bridge and colleting Mussels with Dad. Great photography and an excellent Camera. Thank you once again Kind regards Dave Welch …. from Australia
My Dear Friend, Thanks for replying. We left Leigh-on-Sea when I was seven which would be 1949 as I am now 76 years old and I am impressed with the excellent condition that the Fisher-mans Cottages are in considering they are built of timber and would have been there long before I arrived....I wonder if anybody out there would know how old they are ? Being only seven when we left, my memory is limited to my immediate surround. I do clearly remember Traffic lights at the top of the hill which have now gone and I also clearly remember a Bakers and butchers shop opposite the Church wall at the top of the hill which have now been completely replaced by a Bank of some kind. My Mother would walk me to school and we would cut through the Cemetery and then on to the main Street and along a little way before reaching my School. I cannot remember the name of the School but it was not too far away from the Church, from memory. I must say that Leigh -on Sea looks very nice and quite a quaint little place. If ever my wife Lyn and I should ever go back to UK for a holiday then we would certainly revisit my old home. Further along the Coast in Southend -on-Sea I recall on one occasion when my Father took me to the Life Boat Rescue and we were shown around and I was so impressed with the two boats that were under some kind of Awning but ready to go at a moments notice. I don't know if the old Rail-way Bridge is still there but I have very vivid memories of crossing that Bridge and waiting for the Steam Engine to leave the Station and the smoke would engulf the Bridge with me and Dad on it …. although I don't think that Dad would have been too impressed . Thanks for listening to a snap-shot of time of my Child-hood. Kind regards Dave Welch ….. from Australia.
I think the school you may have gone to is North Street school - does that sound familiar? Leigh has become a lot more affluent since you left, but you're right, it still has charm. there's a little museum in the Old Town which I think you'd find interesting if you do visit - it's an old fishing cottage set out as people would have lived in the past. There are still pedestrian bridges over the train track - three of them I think!
Thankyou my friend for going to the trouble of finding out the School name but the only memory that I have of a School that I went to, was a Pantomime in which I was dressed up as a Golly-wog. I was dressed by my Mother in an outfit that she knitted. It was a black woolen face mask with cut outs so that I could see where I was going and it was hot and itchy and I had to endure that for about an hour ….. which is one of the main reasons for leaving Lea-on-sea and going back to India with my parents. Jokes aside, I am not too sure if I will make it back to the UK for a holiday and I wondered if it is at all possible for you to film this little Museum of the Fishing Cottage and put it on You-tube for me to see ? Kind regards Dave Welch ….. from Australia.

Great Video, My Sister and her Family moved to Leigh-On-Sea last Saturday from North London, So I'm looking forward to my first Visit to this Pretty Town. 😃🐷🏡💖
Thanks, takes me back to growing up, lived all my young years in Leigh, learned to swim when my brother threw me off Bell wharf, saw V.e day in down on the bit of beach next to the wharf, lived over the railway line by the old station (Leigh park road). Got married in 1959 at st clements church, have to pay a visit before to long .
How lovely to receive your message derek and to hear that. I do hope that you come back to visit our home town sometime. Glad to have brought back happy memories to you in the meantime. Happy Christmas to you
I now live in Texas to be able to sit in my office and enjoy a virtual walk my old hometown is fantastic. Great video you covered the best of Leigh on Sea. Thank you!
Hi there Mark, ah Texas is a mighty long way from 'ol Legh on sea. So very pleased to have brought it back to you. It makes it worthwhile to receive such nice messages. BTW We have a Christmastime eve one in Leigh if that grabs you too. All the best to you.
The town I was born in during the 1950's. All so familiar but also different. Thanks for posting this footage. I've walked those paths so many times over the years....
Pure nostalgia: was brought up here. I recall my mothers always taking me to buy bread at the bakers in Leigh Broadway there while I got to work taking bits of the fresh bread to her annoyance (she was busy with the pram with my sister in it !) The bakers son became a friend of mine at school. Went to the Sea Scouts there then my favourite watering hole was The Peter Boat while my brother preferred the Smack Inn. Most of my cousins still live there and I regularly get Facebook updates of them swimming in the sea at Leigh Beach. There is something about Leigh in sunny weather.....I can even can feel it on me now where I currently live, by the sea again but in Malmö where like Leigh I still have the cries of seagulls and beaches I swim from!!! Incredible footage and thanks for leaving it as it s with now annoying music....

Please do connect if you ever visit. We would be very happy to share some time with you down the old town, perhaps for a warm beer and a plate of cockles! Happy too to hear that you enjoyed the walk without music! All the best to you.
Sorry to tell you but Leigh Broadway is NOT in Leigh Old Town. Lived on Canvey and went to Westcliff High which despite its name is located in Leigh, not Westcliff. Vic Ellis, the artist, was a family friend who had his studio in Old Leigh yet lived on Canvey.

Well hello there Michael. What a pleasure to receive your message. Thanks for sharing a little bit of your life with us. I have lived here most of my life and I'm sure I often take it for granted. Hope you have a good and happy life in California?
Had the pleasure to live in Westcliff-on-Sea for nearly a year and used to walk almost daily that path with my dog, from London Road all the way down to the Two Threes Island, beautiful natural reserve...i can remember the Pub next to the Museum with live music and nice food. The chip shop and that van at the corner after the fish market where i could get a quick english breakfast on the way.Lovely! But there're loads of places all over the city, such Gardens, pubs, restaurants and clubs as well,in Southend-on-sea especially.Good memories even if It wasn't the best moment of my life.Anyway,Thanks for the upload, you got lucky with the weather;) I saw that you have never walked in Italy, should give It a try, trust me...

It's so nice......... A couple of lovely pubs just down the bottom of the path & towards the right, ye old smack and Peter boat. Hello M&Y my dear friends! Wow, Leigh is really so lovely....It seems definitely a wonderful place to live! So quiet and peaceful! And I'd really love living in a place on the sea... Ah thank you so much for watching the video of our town. We enjoy living so close to London but by the sea. Now I'm looking forward to seeing your neighborhood dear Renata.
Love it there. Stopped off last couple of years walking this road from the station before going to Southend rides and always as a kid with mum and dad .If You were their filming end of August you would of caught me and me sister struggling to turn our dad in wheelchair right at the front of the ice-cream shop toward the benches ..😳just as you go up those stairs opposite at the side.
Ah, glad to hear you enjoyed our home town. Hope you managed to turn your dad in his wheelchair ok in the end? Thanks for dropping by and taking the time to comment.
If you pause the video at 9:13 you'll see a blue plaque on the far right of the screen only for a second or two. That plaque shows where the water level rose to during the big flood of January 1953.
Thanks for connecting Danny. Yes interesting isn't it. BTW, We have over 100 similar walks here if you find you need another virtual walk at these times when we cannot travel. All the best to you.
Leigh on Sea is nice (One of the better parts of Southend borough) but i always found it plagued by restricted parking and parking wardens on a sunny day and the Peterboat is almost impossible to get served at due to the queues. We used to buy drinks in the Smack and walk them down to the Peterboat to overcome the queue issue. Also most days the water front is just a muddy outlook from the Peterboat due to its positioning. I grew up near Burnham On Crouch and that has a far superior water outlook (No nasty train line next door), boats and pubs and also has the old fashioned town vibe and is not plagued by traffic wardens / too touristy.
I feel the same as it's our home town too. These times certainly make us appreciative of different and more simple things. Thanks for dropping by neighbour!
I wish we had never left My husband has a nice bungalow there he won't let me have it As to Leigh I am a florist and worked at Lindsfarn on the London Rd
Ok am just taking a peek and I can see clearly I WILL ENJOY your videos, I am a huge fan of Watched Walker and Roberts London as well. I have just also subscribed to you. :)

Both of my parents are from Leigh; my father's ashes are off the Bell Wharf, in fact. Plenty of Willders have fished off its shores for centuries, but they are all gone now...
look at the state of the back of the cockle sheds, looks like a construction site. those cockle merchants need pulling into line, they have Fxxxed it right up, I was born down the old town before the bridge was built. that is when it was better a great place to visit.
Hi Brian, I remember the old town before the bridge too, the cobbles were lovely and the new bridge didn't seem to have a good reason for being there. Ah well! I wish you well.
what a shame you ended in the coffee shop, I was hoping you was going to walk to the corner where the grand public house was / is, I used to live in the broadway many many years ok
Ah, I guess we stopped because the grand is boarded up behind a hoarding so not a l to see, perhaps we will do another walk when it’s complete to show you.

Thanks for connecting Danny. Yes interesting isn't it. BTW, We have over 100 similar walks here if you find you need another virtual walk at these times when we cannot travel. All the best to you.
Lovely video. Thank you
Thank you Ian, you're really welcome.
What an interesting place, thanks for the insight.
You're most welcome MA.
Ik I live there
Lovely place. Always happy to visit my family here 👍
Glad you like it Pip, I'm sure there's certainly worse places to reside. Thanks for dropping by.
The Endeavour, the boat by the shore at 5.30. Went to the Dunkirk evacuation
That's right, Ray - and there's a nice write up about her here: www.essexlifemag.co.uk/home/a-tale-of-endeavour-in-leigh-on-sea-1-4312955
@@BoyInAFridge A lot of the fishermen from Leigh took there boats over to Dunkirk, my ex's family were the owners of the Endeavour who went.
@@dazza9326 the incredible bravery of those men...
What a great video. You actually can forget that that you're looking at a video in Essex and not on the med somewhere.
Ha ha, thanks Darren!
Amazing footage, so clear. Does the camera have stabilisers? It's so steady. And thanks for not putting background music on it.
Hi there bengunn99, ah really pleased you enjoyed it without music and that's right the camera has a built in stabiliser and I walk ninja style!
Thanks for taking the time to give your feedback on the town, which I hope will be helpful for others. All the best to you.
At around 10 minutes of the video, on the left hand side is the old leigh on sea railway station, now the sailing clubs, club house.
Thank you for mentioning it Darren
Lovely video, very
well filmed
Thank you Joseph good of you to let us know you enjoyed it. All the best to you and hope to bring you many more.
My grandad used to own the boat yard down there
Thanks for dropping by Billy. Sorry about the late reply btw, I've just discovered you in my junk mail for some reason.
I took for granted however lovely where I live
I feel the same as it's our home town too. These times certainly make us appreciative of different and more simple things. Thanks for dropping by neighbour!
@@LivingWalks The whole county is full heat places to visit. The weather is normally fantastic too
Yes @@TheCoomer, we have a perfect little micro climate don't we.
@@LivingWalks Indeed!
My home town During the floods I lived on the sea front over a cafe.
Hi there Frances and Truly, that must have been an experience. When you see the flood marker it doesn't seem quite possible!
@@LivingWalks we were lucky to be living above the çafe
I wish we had never left My husband has a nice bungalow there he won't let me have it As to Leigh I am a florist and worked at Lindsfarn on the London Rd
Hi @@FrancesandTruly I remember the florist it's not far from us and we loved it!
Ok am just taking a peek and I can see clearly I WILL ENJOY your videos, I am a huge fan of Watched Walker and Roberts London as well. I have just also subscribed to you. :)
That's lovely - Thank you!
Happy Pre Covid Days and glorious weather..
Yes indeed! It seems like a lifetime away, such innocent times. All the best to you.
Fastest walking in the world 😁 great footage.
ha ha thanks Simon, the gopro just makes it look that way, we've had to learn to go more of a snails pace now. Thanks for dropping by.
@@LivingWalks if you don't mind me asking what Gopro model do you use, looks so sharp
I'm going to Leigh on Sea soon 👍🏻🌊🏴🚇
Hope you enjoy it!
Good video
Thanks for the visit Tony, pleased you enjoyed it.
Just subbed (186), great video what camera are you using.
Thanks for the sub! I'm using a GoPro Hero 6...
Great videos! I have just found your channel. Is this with gimball, or the GP6's EIS?
It's using both :)
Could not help but notice Wallace and Grommet’s iconic vehicle parked by the side. 🤓 🤔hmmm
Ah yes, still a few of them around in Old blighty Ian!
can i just moor up anywhere? i have puled in there before and started to run a ground, heard nothing but good things about the place and fancy spending few weeks there on my boat, if anyone has any more info please???
Hope someone can help you with that info Jamie, as I'm really not sure if you can. Hope you enjoy the visit if you do go.
@@LivingWalks thank you
Aarh...the tangy smell of the Estuary salt marshes....unforgettable when you live in London with its traffic pong.
Ah yes Anthony, we live here and we always notice it when we get off the train from London!
Old hometown of David Amess....Leigh on sea
That's right.
Home sweet home 😭
Our home town too Artvid, good to connect with you.
Me and my family live there and it’s so weird seeing it on camera XD
We live there too Rosie, it comes out well on camera doesn't it.
Both of my parents are from Leigh; my father's ashes are off the Bell Wharf, in fact. Plenty of Willders have fished off its shores for centuries, but they are all gone now...
Hope this helped to bring back good memories for you Mark?
Love this, even spotted people I knew in it! What was the date it was actually filmed, please? :)
I'm not 100% but I think it was 30th June (this year)
look at the state of the back of the cockle sheds, looks like a construction site. those cockle merchants need pulling into line, they have Fxxxed it right up, I was born down the old town before the bridge was built. that is when it was better a great place to visit.
Hi Brian, I remember the old town before the bridge too, the cobbles were lovely and the new bridge didn't seem to have a good reason for being there. Ah well! I wish you well.
It looks so continental now.
Ah how nice that you think so Ed!
what a shame you ended in the coffee shop, I was hoping you was going to walk to the corner where the grand public house was / is, I used to live in the broadway many many years ok
Ah, I guess we stopped because the grand is boarded up behind a hoarding so not a l to see, perhaps we will do another walk when it’s complete to show you.
Could have spent more time on Ye Olde "Clog" slapping ritual at 12.12. Driving away bad luck
Ah yes, I should have lingered!

Hi Shark, thanks for the feedback, we have a new setting now on the sound and have learned to improve it over time, but thanks for your feedback, hope it didn't hinder your enjoyment too much?
