Sparks was so underrated. RIP James Avery
Sparks DESERVED more seasons! Rest in paradise, James Avery. 😔🙏🏾❤️🕊️
Yes I used to love Sparks! It definitely deserved better!
Job Corp forced their students to watch a tapeing of sitcoms. They got money, but we didn't get any of it. It sucked because I had to go two times a week. A taping would last 3 hours for a 22-minute show. I mention this because one of those shows was Sparks.
Sparks was a decent show even though Terrance Howard being the "ugly" son while Miguel being the "player" son really didn't make sense at all.
I loooooooved this show❤
I was today years old when I found out Whoopi Goldberg and Jean Stapleton did a sitcom together 😂😂🥴
Me too. I'm interested.
I knew about that show
😂😂😂
@@JuicyPopEntertainment
I remember "True colors" it definitely was a game changer
People born in the late 90s and early 2000s see that often in shows but back then especially in America it hardly happened
Since I had CCTV (Canadian Company Television) ive seen interracial relationships in many shows on that channel in the mid 90s especially on a show called "Ready or Not" which featured the leads dating both dating black teen boys at different times
Me too
We had sooo many black sitcoms in the 1990's!! I wish there was a dedicated network now in 2024 that would play all the reruns of those obscure shows.
TVOne was good at airing the forgotten shows when they first hit the air, but now it seems like they only show reruns of the more popular/iconic black family shows.
@@juju929yep they don’t even air soul train!
PlutoTV is one 👍
Bounce do
Dabl, Bounce TV, and there's another one that airs old black sitcoms.
That's Smokey's mom from Friday! 😂😂😂😂
Had to come to the comments see if I wasn't tripping on that being Smokey's mom...Make It Enough
HAAAHAAA YES I DID! 😂😂
Smokey: Get your @$$ up and cook, or clean up or do sumthin! 😂😂😂
It is 😂
The only one of these I remember is sparks
WOW!!! There was a plethora of African American shows that failed in the 90's. This is interesting.
there were a lot of start up networks who used Black shows to get viewers then eventually dropped them and then went back to primarily white shows just fyi
Yes, some were good but some were pretty bad...lol. Still, I liked how so many would come out for us to see, even if briefly. Even fewer would be successful today because of wokeness and how most if not all the shows would be heavy on race, victimhood, "whites bad" and light on an actual storyline...
Yeah the networks didn't give them a chance to succeed like the white sitcoms, that would stay on despite being low in the ratings.
@@terryindachat7296 yeah...perhaps there may have been racial consideration and mass appeal or lack of it, but to be fair it's also not unusual to have tons of tv shows that failed to take off or even air...and most of those where white casts.
What was the cultural landscape like during the 90's and how truthful were tv shows a reflection of it back then?
I do find something interesting in those tv shows however in that a few are fairly mixed with both black and white main casts.
@@terryindachat7296my exact thoughts
Sheryl Lee Ralph has aged like fine wine along with Lorraine Toussaint, Wendy Raquel Robinson, Angela Bassett, and so many other ladies.. A lot of these shows were very underrated in my opinion. I have a request, Good News.
Absolutely 💯
❤❤
Sheryl Lee was always a baddie to me, that never got enough praise. They all fine honestly 😂
Good news was a good show, but I personally always felt like it was cancelled because it was just a 90s reworking of Amen, that didn’t quite have the same flare as its predecessor.
@@PoyTroy I had the crush on Phyllis Stickney's fine chocolate self...Sheryl was def bad
As a 43 year old so many memories unlocked! I remember all of these shows
You do ??? Most of these shows never knew they existed. LOL.Till now.
Me too! I was a teenager growing up when most of these shows came and went. I'm 45 now! 😊
I’m 38, I remember some, not all.
ME TOO☺️
Same.
Lorenz was the kid in every show 😂
He sure was. 😂😂😂
He had acting talent even as a youngin!
Doug E. Doug, “Sparks”, and “The Gregory Hines Show” deserved more.
Absolutely
I enjoyed Where I Live. It had potential!
I also liked Where I Live and Sugar & Spice.
OOOH do 2000s tv shows that never took off pleaseeeeee
Yes!
@@JuicyPopEntertainment i told people Sara Rue debut in a different tv show prior to her famous role in "Popular" and people thought I was lying
I knew i wasn't wrong 😂
And please take a deeper dive and go back further into the 80s! I can think of a lot of shows from the 80s that never took off (Charlie & Company, Homeroom, He's The Mayor)! 😊
Yessss OMG that show ‘Taina’ definitely deserves to be on the list. I’m still pissed about it being canceled despite high ratings.😥
Pan AM
Graceland
Playboy (naturi naughton was in it)
Taye Diggs night drama where the day kept repeating
Halle Berry night drama (this was during the time where film stars were trying to crossover to the small screen)
Who remembers Cuts on UPN? That show was criminally underrated and I’m surprised it didn’t last that long after two seasons because when the series was cancelled, UPN continued to lose more viewers and financial issues aside and by September 2006, UPN and WB merged into The CW.
I do
I do 🙋🏾♀️
I do too.
Loved that show
When that happened, the majority of the black shows were gone. Those that survived didn't last long on The CW.
I remember “Where I Live” I liked that show.
the great thing is that I can discover these shows for the first time on the ‘rare gems’ channel 😊
That's right! Rare Gems is the place to go to watch full episodes of most of these shows. ❤
Cosby(the other show), highly underrated
And also RIP Dana Hill
And James Avery, Gregory Hines and Jane Stapleton
@@thepubknight6144Nancy Walker too.
New Attitude is on RUclips,I was bored one day and watched it…I see why it was cancelled lol s/o to Larenz Tate’s agent, that boy was in everything!
New Attitude was my favorite
The episode with wrestler Triple H on Grown Ups was great
“Where I Live” was a good show. It deserved so much more.
Sparks premiered on the same day as Malcolm & Eddie.
Yay! Thank you for adding Sugar and Spice, Sparks and New Attitude! I enjoyed these sitcoms growing up. I'm so grateful Sugar and Spice introduced me to the GIFTED and LEGENDARY Loretta Devine.❤
Full circle Shery Sheppard was on the Jamie fox show for a bit and of course Gerret Morris was one of the co stars o. Jamie foxx
As a huge Punky Brewster fan (my favorite show as a kid) and being a huge Steve Urkel fan seeing them both in together at 18:18 made me geek out as a 19 year old and instantly made me feel like a kid again, especially the meta jokes they did in that scene
Fun Fact: Before Sugar and Spice, Ms. Loretta Devine was on the very first season of a little show called A Different World! 😊
@@meaganhaywood3405 Fun Fact: To most A Different World fans, future seasons were more popular and more memorable. I didn't get into the first season until the series was in syndication.
Wait..Flex played a character that didnt have the first name Flex? 😂
He’s the black Charlie sheen 😂
So many black shows that should've thrived
And also, "Thunder Alley", "The Second Half", "The Good Life", "Phenom", "Can't Hurry Love" and "Maybe This Time".
‘Phenom’ was actually a good show.
Another awesome video!
“Grown Ups” was my favorite,
and I wish it would have worked.
Fun Fact:
Tammy Townsend,
who played Eddie’s girlfriend
Greta in “Family Matters”,
played the recurring
character Melissa in the series.
(I still have a crush on her,lol☺️)
Vikilyn Reynolds later went on to play as Smokey's mother in Friday
Thank you i was trying to figure it out
There are lots of shows for a third video. Kevin Hill, South Beach, The Lyricist Lounge Show, Brothers. Keep them coming.🙂🔥💯
Brothers was covered in Pt 1.
Great story on these short-lived shows from the '90s
I use to watch New Attitude and Sparks reruns on BET back in the day. I remember the show Sugar and Spice and it wasnt that good.
Thanks to RUclips I learned about many series like Sugar and Spice, New Attitude and Heart and Soul, another pilot that featured Morris Day but never took off
These were some of the best shows at the time even though they didn't sometimes do well in the ratings. The best way a network can mess up a show is to change the slot to Saturdays in the 90's.
Another good one! I loved a show where Whoopi owned a hotel and where Damon Wayans was a cop but I can't remember the name of them🤔
I was waiting for this video Juicy Pop! I’m so glad you added Sparks and New Attitude because those shows in my opinion should have been bigger.
For part 3, add Frank's place, Snoops, Linc's, and City of Angels with Blair Underwood
Frank's Place was in 1988... but a most wonderful show nonetheless.
Also For Your Love with Holly Robinson Peete and Tamala Jones. ❤️
@@danavixen6274 For Your Love lasted 5 seasons on TV... it had a great cast. Holly Robinson Peete went from 21 Jump Street (1987-1991) to Hanging With Mr Cooper (1992-1997) to For Your Love (1998-2002) to Like Family (2003-2004) to Love Inc (2005-2006). She stayed consistently working on TV from 1987 to 2006. That is incredible.
@@IceManLikeGervinAgreed! 💯
I loved City Of Angeles. I remember writing CBS to save it. It worked the 1st time.
Grown Ups was a decent show and the show premiered a week before The Parkers premiered on UPN
Smokey's mom should have told the creators of sugar and spice to make it enough.😅
I love the show True Colors
So did I!
You Take The Kids with Nell Carter Roger E Mosley & Dante Beze AKA Mos Def
Could your channel also discuss Nickeledeon's Salute Your Shorts?
🎶 Camp Anawanna... 🎶
@@PHSDM104 "It's i hope we never part, so get it right, or pay the price!!" 😂😂😂
@@PHSDM104 We hold you in our hearts
Bobby E. McAdams II who played Trevor on Minor Adjustments played Mouse on New York Undercover in the episode Manchild
I also think every actor who played a Jackson 5 character in "Jacksons The America Dream" was in each show in this video
Please do Waynehead.
Out of all these shows, i only remember Sparks & Grown-ups. True Colors, & the series with John Amos & his family living in Archie Bunker's old place, both had the most potential! It's truly sad that both of them failed, & even sadder, that, as late as the 1990s, it was still seen as taboo to have a series about a black man being married to a white woman!!!
SPARKS was my favorite on this list and it really was a good show. My Granny, heaven ready her soul, LOVED the Gregory Hines show. She loved him!
Also, I wouldn't liked to see PARKER LEWIS CAN'T LOSE on the list. It was a pretty good show too.
I used to love Sparks! Great video
We need a Part 3 please!
Could your channel talk about Disney in the Afternoon and also do a part 3 of this?
And what's crazy is that Cleghorne premiered the day after Kids WB premiered
I hope you talk about You Take the Kids, Two of a Kind, Freaks and Geeks, My So-Called Life, Space Cases, The Journey of Allen Strange, and Muscle in Part 3
Space Cases!!!
Do “Good News”
Kinda wished Yunoka Doyle's career would've taken off after her spot on Star Search back in the day. It also sucks that Jaleel White, Terrence Howard, and Miguel Nunez are only remembered as Urkel, Juwanna Man, and anything Mayne related (respectively).
Terrence Howard is Oscar Nominated still one of the biggest actors today…. Jaleel has been definitely typecasted since Urkel… he got the Skreech treatment… and Miguel Nuñez is always gonna be DeeJay from Street Fighter lol
RIP Sullivan Walker
My favorite is a pilot that never took off...Sunday in Paris. That have Debbie Allen and Diahann Caroll as daughter and mother. With Jennifer Lewis, Essence Atkins, etc. 😢 it was good
Please do 1979 sitcom “A New Kind Of Family”, costarring Janet Jackson 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
I love Where I Live and Sparks. Those shows had potential.
You work so hard ❤
Yes I do! 😝
@@JuicyPopEntertainment2:23 wow 😧😳.
It's funny watchin Chappelles Show and seeing Dave throw shots at Buddies. When u can make fun of urself its always fun 😂
Love to see part 3 on more of these short-lived shows
I never heard of any of these shows. I can understand why some of these didn’t work. I would watch anything with Flex in it though, thought he was so cute ☺️
You Should've Added Good News
That was a good show too.
Good news was so good!
oh yes love Good News
Part 2 implies there is a part 1. I will watch this and then that one. Thanks Juicy Pop
I 'memba "True Colors", "Baghdad Cafe" 🍇
Bagdad Cafe and the Doug E Doug one were aired here in the UK. I remember them very well.
Cuts, busting loose, for your love, love Inc, and good news.. let's go and keep them coming
If you do a part 3 please add Goode Behavior. Show with a solid cast but was cut short.
Heard of very few of these shows before today 😮😮
Damn how many shows was Larenz Tate on? 😂
Every damn thing 😂😂😂😂
I was waiting for this comment. 😂
He should of been a big star
I think he mentioned his agent didn't think an "Urban" looking black actor could be a mainstream star and it derailed his rise
And now we got many black filmmakers, actors and actresses who look "Urban" and are a list stars
@@thepubknight6144 You don’t consider Larenz Tate a “big star”?? Not being funny, genuinely curious. I mean he hasn’t had Will Smith paydays but i’d say starting on so many failed sitcoms to his body of film work is very impressive idk
@@prestonpfeifferI personally thought Larenz Tate’s career was pretty successful myself. Sure he didn’t really cross over to more mainstream and stuck with “black films” so to speak but I don’t look at that as bad. He’s still working.
Where I Live was a magnificent sitcom premise with an outstanding cast and relatable storylines! My favorite episode was when Doug, Reggie and Malcolm moved out into their own apartment and got a harsh taste of reality lol. Also, Grown Ups would have been a better sitcom if Tammy Townsend and Bumper Robinson were cast as the married couple and Bumper Robinson was Jay's best friend from college in my mind. I'm still left wondering if Jay went ahead with the wedding or not? smh lol
Sugar & spice seamed like such a good show. I watched the episodes on RUclips
I got the feeling that tried to make Grown Ups a Friends clone. When I watched it that's the vibe that I got.
Well it would have been inspired by Living Single because Friends is a Living Single clone
@@more2neika Yeah except it looks nothing like Living Single. It’s like copying a knock off drink.
This channel is awesome. I love your content and great narration.
I actually kept the TV Guide issues each year that showcase the new fall lineups for the year. I have 1995 to, I think, early 200s. It’s fun to look back at what and how each show was being promoted. You can tell which ones they gave a lot of weight to, thinking they will be hits, and which ones were underdogs that took off.
I loved Sparks, I used to record the episodes.
C Bear & Jamal
Bruno The Kid
Mummies Alive
Nick Freno Licensed Teacher
Damon
Woa punky brewster as an adult was stunning!
The only show I knew about or watched on this list was Sparks. I never knew about these other shows but would have loved to watch especially with Larenz Tate. I love him so much!
I remember sparks being on BET with Thea & that church sitcom (i forgot the name of it). Im really showing my generation😂🤣
"Amen" wit Sherman Helmsley
Damn shame about True Colours... it was ahead of its time.
Thank you for bringing us part 2. Fun facts: Phyllis Yvonne Stickney & Larenz Tate were also on The Women Of Brewster Place & The Inkwell, Vickilyn Reynolds was Willie Manchester’s woman in South Central & Smokey’s mom in Friday & The late Gregory Hines, Brandon Hammond & Wendell Pierce were also in Waiting To Exhale. Can we please get a part 3 on the following shows:
Singer & Sons
You Take The Kids
Home Room
Tall Hopes
Arsenio
Built To Last
Damon
I really enjoyed going back down memory lane with these long forgotten shows that you featured in these two videos. Some that I remember fondly and others that I don't remember at all. And one that I rather forget (Homeboys In Outer Space)!!! 😂😂😂 However if you decide to do a Part 3, one show that I remember that you should feature is Arsenio Hall's short lived sitcom from 1997. Vivica A. Fox was his wife. Other than that please keep these awesome videos coming! ❤😊❤
I remember watching True Colors. I remember the episode that has to do with a prom and what kind of music to play and I think they do a black prom and a white prom. It left an Asian kid, I believe, not sure where to go, which is profound because segregation is short sighted and destructive.
I just want to give a shout out to Juicy pop for bringing history back from the 90s there are TV shows I never heard of before some of them are similarly I did but never thought I have existed I'm a 90s child and to be honest with you if I can remember every TV show in the world I would love to be able to watch them all over again
Not me wishing this was hours longer 😅
This Series has reminded me of a lot of 90 shows that I totally forgot about! Thank you!
Hi, Juicy Pop Can You Do A Segment On ABC's "Fudge" Which Aired From January 1995-March 1996
Loved that show. It was based on the Superfudge book series by Judy Blume.
Never heard of most of these shows
THANKS FOR INCLUDING SPARKS!
For a part 3, add "Rhythm & Blues", which aired very briefly on NBC's Thursday night lineup in the fall of 1992.
This is a side note, but Whoopi Goldberg has the prettiest skin ❤. I always thought that since I was little.
Thanks for consistently making all this wonderful content for us 🙏🏾
had no idea that Sheryl Lee Ralph & Phyllis Yvonne Stickney & Morris Day did a show together ❤ I love them all ‼️ I miss Sparks! RIP JAMES AVERY 🙏🏾 RIP GREGORY HINES 🙏🏾
I dont know if you did it already, but thr spin off to 227 "Jackeé" and the spinoff to Golden Girls "The Golden Palace". I'm an old head 😅
Part 3 please, Homeroom and Sister Kate.
I loved Sister Kate!
@@nicklepickle03 RIP to Bill Cobbs. He was on Homeroom.
Stop with the addictive content
LOL
! I can't stop watching! I love this channel! Brings back so many memories!!
Phyllis Yvonne Stickney deserved her own show. She is one of the funniest underrated actresses.
New Attitude was loosely based on the popular urban stage play "Beauty Shop". A lot of these rejected shows had gotten a second life in reruns on BET in the late 80s to the mid 90s.
Thank you sis, some of these shows I remember some I forgot about and some I didn't even know existed. Thank you Thank you 🙂🫶🏾

Camille Winbush AKA Vanessa that's cute
She was on the movie ghost dog too as a kid. She had a simple yet interesting character. If you haven't seen then I highly recommend it!
I clearly didn't know she was a TV star back then okay. She grown up now and my God she is a Nubian queen
Taking me back back back. Wow. Thank you
Wow I don't remember these shows! 😮 Thanks for covering them 😊
Larenz Tate was in so many failed shows in the 90's.
