    Here is another Mateba 6 Unica video. Disassembling the mechanism is not something to do unless you really have to.
    Here we cover the basic field strip of the revolver, as well as opening up the indexing system.
    This is a UK legal version, so unfortunately the semi automatic function is disabled, making it a single action or double action revolver. It is still an incredible piece though!

    Excellent video, I have a Grifone with cylinder lock up issues, the cylinder rear doesn't look worn but there seems excessive play on some chambers but not all. The chambers that lock up do so very tight but the chambers that do not seem to have excessive play, does the locking pin jam sometimes or does it wear, have you any advice on how to proceed?

    What modifications are made to the gun to stop it from working its normal, "semi auto" mode?

  • @northernrebel1375
    @northernrebel1375 3 года назад

    It looks like with some modifications you could easily turn this into a normal single action handheld revolved. I know that is illegal in the UK, but its still doable.

    A few months back I had a look inside the same area you did (firing and cylinder rotating bits) because my 6-Unica is "jamming". I now _suspect_ the hand arm is jamming internally, because that part is all munged up. But, I don't _know_ for sure it is. When assembled, it exhibits the issue by preventing you drawing back the hammer. If the issue is the hand arm, and you fire it, no problem, the slide will just fail to go forward. IF, however, the problem is in the lock work, the pressure of a cartridge firing would surely irreparably damage something. It's frustrating as only intermittent faults can be! What I found is that back plate with the two screws, well the two screws were not torqued at all, and the manual I have says they should be loc-tited. PERHAPS the plate was loose, and the firing pin block was hanging up during cocking, causing damage to the hand arm. It's frustrating because I *think* I have fixed my incredibly rare Italian revolver, but I can't be sure, and I don't want to break it using it!
    On further watch, your carbine hasn't got the firing pin block my revolver does. It goes through the back plate there, and hooks onto a protuberance from the center bit the opening rod goes through.

    • @bangNbark
      @bangNbark  4 года назад

      That sounds very reasonable, I would suggest it could also be caused by that forked arm bit on the right hand side of the hammer, or associated parts as I can cause it to jam by incorrectly assembling it and attempting to dry cycle. Something to at least consider.
      Curious regarding the pin block. I wonder if that's a carbine difference or an update in manufacturing standard?

    • @Hansengineering
      @Hansengineering 4 года назад

      @@bangNbark That's what I am calling the 'hand arm'. I am not terribly versed in revolvers, but I believe the bit that spins the cylinder is called the 'hand'? That part, where the forked lever is hinged with the bit that actually spins the cylinder, is pretty torn up. It _looks_ like it was allowed to wobble and ground itself on the walls of the area housing it.
      It was rather *completely awful* to reassemble in the revolver version. Getting those 3 pieces back on the pin was next to impossible. What finally worked was tying the sprung hand to the hand arm with some dental floss, reassembling, then removing the floss.

    • @bangNbark
      @bangNbark  4 года назад

      @@Hansengineering Ah yes I'm with you. The dental floss is a great idea. I can tell you for nothing now, it took me many, many attempts. I occasionally would forget to locate that pin into the forked bit.... Drove me mad!

      Not without gunsmithing. Although, for the UK market part of the stock can be removed, but it leaves a small section of stock bar on there to maintain the correct length

    Thank you so much for the video. I had a few follow up questions as a new owner of a Grifone.
    Can the barrel on the Grifone be removed just like the revolvers, and swap between the revolver barrels?
    How is the stock retained on the beaver tail?
    I hope we can keep providing more info on these beauties as time goes on. If there was enough interest I’d love to create spare parts for these firearms. Especially reproduction rubber grips or 1913 optic or accessory mounts.
    Again, thanks for the content!

    • @bangNbark
      @bangNbark  3 года назад

      Ah awesome! Are you US or Europe?
      The barrel ls can be swapped out, there is a pair of flats on the barrel which I believe is the same as the Unica revolver and they thread out.
      I believe the stock is held in place with a permanent style of rivet. Mine looks like it's not intended to be removed without severe damage.
      You know I hadn't thought of other accessories. I have a rail up top which does me. However there is a lug which is threaded to take the stock. A block could easily be made to fit that for all sorts of things. Lasers, lights, bipods etc if wanted.
      Enjoy!

      Thanks for the lightning fast reply!
      I haven’t taken possession yet. I’m in the US and won an auction for it. It’s the Grifone in 44 Magnum.
      I was told by another collector of Matebas that he has seen one example where the Grifone parts were installed on a standard Unica, and sold as the carbine. That’s where a good portion of my questions stemmed from, as I bought the carbine sight unseen for a small fortune. It’s surprisingly easier to get the carbine transfered in the state I live in (California), but I really wanted the revolver version so I figure I could just have a collection of parts to switch between carbine and revolver.
      That’s fantastic to know I can use a wrench to remove the barrel. I wonder if your stock was riveted due to UK laws? As I understand, the 357 stock is meant to collapse or fold, but the 44 is meant to be fixed?
      There was a limited supply of rubber reproduction grips on Gunbroker, but it seems that supply dried up. How has your grip held up, and in your opinion, what do you think is the fatal flaw that causes the grips to break horizontally?
      Looking at photos, it seems the Grifone has threaded holes at the receiver for both the stock and optional weaver mount. The standard revolvers seem to have this merely as an option. Two styles of mount could be made based on the platform - a mount utilizing the side mounted threads, or a mount that bridges atop where the original sights would be threaded. This is just from what I see though. Without the carbine in hand I cannot say for sure how viable my idea would be.
      Can’t wait to get the carbine either way!
      Since there isn’t much info or forum for these firearms I’ve resorted to polling owners wherever I find them.

      Oh you are in for a treat! These really are special. I bought mine without seeing it too. I phoned the dealer, asked what stock it had (there is what I call the spas12 style like mine and also like a wooden M16 style one) and then said doesn't matter, take my credit card number. I'd tell you how much it cost, but it'll make you sick ;)
      I don't think it was riveted due to the laws. It looks too nice! Most things when converted are done not to the best standard and the mateba is a nice standard of quality.
      There would be no differentiation in British law for the calibre. These are all in the same boat. To my knowledge they are all fixed at factory, and then the importer here had them modify not to fold but to detach. All the ones I have seen - which, only mine in real life others in pics, detach under the cheek rest which complies with British law. You then have quite a wild hand cannon.
      This thing, shoulder fired, in let's be honest a noisy calibre with a muzzle break gets a lot of attention on the range here. We are only allowed semi auto .22 rim fire and shotgun's, so that adds to the ".... how on god's earth....." Questions too 😂
      Regarding the wood.... In my opinion, it is due to poor storage (wood dries out) and/ or impact. So owner neglect really.
      Mounting options would be easy. Does yours have the optic rail with it? How about the owners case? I have safariland speed loaders for mine too. I'll have to look up which. It's a S&W model that works

      I can’t wait believe me. It’s been a long time coming. I spent around $5000 for my carbine. Looks more like a shooters grade rifle, but that’s okay. I shoot what I collect 🙂
      If the stock is indeed riveted to the rear tang or beaver tail, I may elect to just remove the rivets and instead use fasteners to remove the stock on and off from the rest of the gun. I’d like to preserve a lot of the wood furniture if I could. It just looks way to nice.
      I’d imagine it’s a flat and pleasant shooter from all the features that make the Mateba so cool.
      My particular carbine did not come with the optic rail. There was another 44 on Gunbroker with the rail, but I could not justify paying an additional $2000 for the rail. Unless I made a mistake by not getting it. I just figure I would recreate a rail with proper 1913 rails, so I could mount a more modern optic (thinking an older Italian Konus scope to stay with the theme of the gun, but I wouldn’t be opposed to a modern optic like a Trijicon SRO or Aimpoint). Seems a lower rail could also be added for a light or even a small bipod.
      I already get weird looks at the range. In a world of Glocks, 1911s, and AR15s, I’m the weirdo with the oddball European stuff. I did just finish a Accuracy International L115A3 build. Shoots like a dream!
      I’m thinking if I had to recreate the grips in wood, I’d either use a different type of wood or just a rubber or aluminum grip, and thicken it up internally. I’m full of hairbrained ideas right now, but that’s the excitement talking. 🤣. No original case, just the gun. Last one I saw with all original packaging was $10000.

      @@romeo_alpha0176 I'm sure! How long does the process take for you to take delivery?
      The wood is gorgeous on these so do what you can to look after it. They aren't super fragile, it's just replacing it isn't as easy which makes people nervous. I shoot mine alot. I just wouldn't run over it with a Silverado or whatever.
      They are very soft. A pussy cat to shoot. I can't imagine the 44 being significantly worse/harsh.
      Watch your face too. That cylinder gap blast is big even on a 38 load. A 44special will be for sure. The magnum will step it up 😂. There is a blast diverter for want of a better word in there, but they get lost. It's that Cresent blues metal piece held in with 2 grub screws.
      I don't think it's a mistake not having the optic rail, especially for £2k extra. The iron sights worked well for me. I can hit an 8" gong from the shoulder at 200metres comfortably. Revolver cartridges aren't known to be accurate, and have the ballistics of a brick in molasses. But, the barrel length, stock and awesome trigger make it an absolute blast.
      I have a few videos of mine. If you notice it's almost always with different optics. I play about. I can do an in-depth video of any other aspects of you would like to see anything else.
      I had heard that these can go north of $10k. Mine came with the original case, optic rail, and 3 safariland speed loaders. Remember I said I stopped asking questions and just gave over my credit card number? ....I paid $600 shipped. Yeah. I wasnt mucking about then.
      I also love the oddball stuff, well certainly for UK terms. I have a video of all my UK guns you can take a look at if you are interested too.
