    The resemblance to the Unimog is no accident: Product director Gustav Krettenauer deliberately used proven components from the U 406 to bring the MB-trac onto the market as a low-cost competitor despite the low production numbers. At the same time, the standardisation of the major assemblies ensured efficiency in repair work and customer support.

    My No1 tractor is the Massey Ferguson 35...... The first tractor I drove and in my opinion, still the best. I used to use an International 955 back in the early 80s and it was a mighty fine tractor. It had a lovely sound. Far better than a smoky old 8210. Creep on the steering wheel is normal on hydrostatic steering systems due to leakage (for lubrication) through the orbitrol valve. I like the John Deere cab layout, the gears and the manual spools.

    As a International trained engineer, in my opinion the best two tractors ever built, are the 1455XL and the 956XL. I would say they were the most reliable tractors ever built and two of the best work horses you could have on a farm.

    Wonderful selection of tractors Olly. You'd laugh at my choice - The 59 and 69 series of Zetor, both 4 and 2wd from the 1980s and 90s . They went for years without needing a spanner, and had big cabs and oil filters you cleaned out with a penknife. The 4wd were immense on slopes.

    The MB-trac makes history: In July 1973, the tractor from Daimler rolled off the production line for the first time. As a dependable workhorse on the farm and field, the MB-trac has shaped generations - and is still providing inspiration to this day. The Unimog’s brother with angular contours benefited from the cutting-edge technology that continues today in the modern Unimog implement carriers.

    When I worked on farms back in the early 1980's the Case 1455xl was a sight to behold. Of all the tractors I have seen or driven I think the 1455 has THE best and THE most unique sounds. Looking at them now still makes me smile.

    • @Andy-ix2ox
      @Andy-ix2ox 10 месяцев назад

      We had a couple of leyland 2100’s but needed 4wd so in 81 or 82 we got a 1455 and thought we had more power than we would ever need, now 40 years later we have only one tractor less than 200hp just for the rake , leyland went defunct and we didn’t have much luck with the IH and went to ford for a while but have basically had Deeres and fendt / Massey for the last 20 years but like Olly says the cost of new ones is crazy expensive we used to move on all tractors at about 6000 hrs now we tend to keep them for 10,000 plus one of the fendts has over 20,000 and even at 10 years old is used any day we can travel. Forty years ago we were very busy to put up a thousand hours a year on a tractor now we find it hard to justify a tractors existence unless it is doing 2000 plus. Just had a thought a set of tyres for one of our tractors now costs more than what was considered a big tractor back then!

    Nice video…a Ford 7600 A1 would be at the top of my list,had one but had to move it on when my job went pear shaped….i honestly cant see why they cost so much nowadays,much like lorries the price new is ridiculous and reliability is a toss of a coin on anything,my boss wont run any lorry out of warranty nowadays…worlds gone mad…!

    Olly. I lived beside guys who had the first MB Trac 1500 in Ireland.. 1984 . What a machine . My brother and I spent hours and hours watching these guys with this and all their other equipment. John Deere 3140/ Volvo bm 648 loading shovel and 1075 combine. He later worked in the farm so I got to go in these things … you should get a1600 mb trac for sure..

    I liked the International 885 when I was a kid, the JD6910 a bit later but for timber work a 6 cylinder County still takes some beating. Today I drive a Ford 1910 made in Japan, basically a Kubota painted blue. The size of a grey Fergy , four wheel drive, and it can squeeze into little places in the woodlands I work in these days. A 1.7 litre engine with tons of torque, almost a baby County but it doesn't take an acre to turn around.

    Another superb blog Olly, you have a great collection of tractors including the 1987 big Case and the David Brown / case that you have the engine stripped down. Personally my favourite tractor would be those case tractors. I have happy memories myself sitting on the tool box of case tractors like that with my grandfather while he was farming. I know you don't like ploughing oily but there was something therapeutic watching the soil turn over looking out the back window. Plus those cases would have been British made if you look close enough you should find a David Brown badge on them somewhere.
