1 week post Kidney removal: pee, poop, breathing, and more

- Milestones to achieve:
Pee, poop, breathing, gurgling, pain management, dressing removal, exercise, anxiety and flexibility.
Peeing due to a catheter, had to pee in bed with a bottle :/
Pooping waited for 3 days before anything happened. Then it was just simple and easy thanks to a laxative.
Breathing exercise machine, through practice I ended up getting all three balls up.
The gurgling of gas in the torso cavity. Sounded like I was constantly hungry, but it dissipated.
Dressing remove, I did them all because I wanted to control the pain.
Exercise, just walking. My brain wants to run and jog and do weights, but I'm just walking. Incrementing 200m each trip.

Thanks - had my op to remove a kidney on 26/11/24 .. your symptoms are very much what I’m having now - so very informative and helpful.Your last comment about thanking the Hospital Staff was very touching and so right - they get criticism ( media etc ) when things go wrong - but never get applaud when they do well. a UK patient .

Thank you for videos! What is your GFR now? They say the remaining kidney is getting bigger, as it is doing job for two.
I'm doing an update video shortly. I have a doctor's appointment soon to find out my GFR, but 12 months ago it was 58 (should be above 60). The remaining kidney feels bigger, but that could be my imagination.
Thank you for making your video, I have just had to have my left kidney removed and fully intend to make a similar video once I have recovered .

Thanks for your thoughts, I'm glad it was useful. I looked for a video when I was doing the work up so I had an idea, there was nothing.
If I remember correctly, on the third day I felt like things were getting better. And the best news is everything gets better by the day.
Having said that, I relaxed way too much. I have just recently done my 2-year checkup and I haven't looked after my body. My kidney function is slightly worse than post-op and my cholesterol is very high. So it is back to rabbit food and lots of exercises.

2 years ago when you posted this I didn't realise how important it is for some. Add to that I was not doing so well mentally. But now I am better and trying to contribute to this community more to help others.
I am 72 and had a radical nephrectomy 3 months ago. I was getting better as far as being able to walk farther and farther. One day, about a month ago, my dog pulled me hard and that night I had bad chest pain that was a muscle issue, but I am now very short of breath after walking 50 meters, requiring 5 minutes of rest. After this much time, I expected to be much more mobile. The doctor found nothing that was damaged from the dog pulling incident.
Oh no did so you never recovered from it?

I was just diagnosed with a growth that may be cancer and need one of my kidneys removed..How are you doing now with one kidney ?

I was really scared also. Dont be. Mine had a cancerous tumor on it, but now they remove the entire kidney.m and zero cancer.
I was in and out of the hospital in 19 Hours.
My recovery is going great !!!.and So Will Yours !!!.

My partner had his left kidney removed a week ago on Tuesday and is still in a lot of pain on his left side. He says it feels like spasms that come and go around where the kidney was. Is this normal? We were told as he's a younger man it maybe harder on him because of the muscles in his abdomen. I'm just worried as he's not really sleeping and is exhausted!!
I remember spasms too. This is major surgery, if worried definitely speak to the surgeon. Sleep was really difficult for quite a while, plus constantly being tired as your body tries to repair. I don't like sleeping on my back, but that was the only way for the first few weeks. I remember sleeping with my knees bent to take pressure off my abdomen.
How long it takes to recover right after surgery I mean can move ?
They wanted me up and moving immediately. The painkillers helped, and I wanted to pee in the toilet rather than in a bottle, so I was motivated to get up soon. I won't lie; it wasn't easy on the first day, but it gets better each day.
How are you keeping nowadays
@@gerry4915 battling the bulge. Overweight and out of shape, including mentally. Working on both. I will do some updates when I am motivated.
@@KidneyDonor-Davecan hardly believe you got out of bed first day. If I get my bilateral nephrectomy anyone who tries to get me up too early… is going down. When I can move again that is. Stay well. Cheers
Husband recovering ofter kidney surgery July 1 it's now July 5 still feeling like someone punched me in the stomach hospital was no fun no sleep
I understand and remember that. It will get better. Hang in there. What you do will make a lot of difference. My wife was just unimaginably fantastic.
Just out of work for 6 weeks the doctor doesn't want me to do anything to do with lifting or binding mainly taking it easy and drink a lot of water no soda for a guy that was working at Goodwill for 3 years never calling in sick it's hard to just do nothing sit in a recliner
@@robertellis6505 I thought the 6 weeks would be like a holiday, where I could get things done. a big NUP. The recliner was my best friend. Streaming services my close buddy.
I was partway through studying for a masters degree and thought I could finish that, but brain fade and concentration were shot. Plus you just get so tired from doing simple things. Just laying about waiting to recover was the best thing to do. Remember you just had major surgery and the body needs to recover. Try to make the most of your rest.
