  • Cowboy Beans with Bacon & Hamburger - Best Baked Beans EVER - Loaded Baked Beans - The Hillbilly Kitchen
Cowboy Beans loaded with ground beef and bacon are the side dish that goes with everything grilled. Season them to suit your tastes sweet, savory or spicy. There is no wrong way to make them. They are a must at big summer cookouts like Memorial Day, Father's Day, July 4th and Labor Day and hang on to the recipe for Tailgating Season. You can pack them up and take them with you to potluck dinners or make a big pot on your next camping trip.
Psalms 46:1 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
    Remember to Put God First!

    1/2 pound Bacon

I'm Australian and my parents had a big cattle station (ranch) in the Northern Territory when I was a kid in the 60s and 70s. 40 Jackaroos (cowboys) worked the land. The English cook would cook a similar version of this about 3 times a week. It was always a favourite with everyone. Except it was cooked with sausage, English baked beans and fresh tomato, if we had them. Fresh ingredients were always hard to get as the nearest store was 6 hours drive away (we got truck deliveries once a month) and it was hard to have a garden as the area had little rainfall. Mum called it Hash. I still make it, and my kids now feed it to their families.

I used 1 1/2 pounds of mixed dried beans that I soaked overnight, one pound of ground beef, one pound of bacon, one pound of Lil Smokies, two tablespoons of Balsamic Vinegar, 1/2-Cup Golden Sorghum Molasses, 2-teaspoons dried mustard, 12-ounces Tomato Paste, 28-ounce can tomato sauce, beyond that, my ingredients and process followed your recipe exactly. Just finished 33 days of radiation and 2 rounds of chemo for colorectal cancer, so the scripture really was a blessing for me to hear, too. I was blessed to be in a Christian hospital where I was prayed over by the nurses and able to give my testimony to so many. I had begun to think that the world was filled with so much evil and had been asking God where were the Godly people. Even the Rural Rides bus drivers were Christians! God allowed the cancer to bring me hope and to show me that He created me with an inner strength and faith that I never knew I had. I bless His holy name.

I love your channel. And all the down to earth dishes I grew up on.
Growing up in a large family, mom made this frequently. The beans and veggies varied. Ground beef or venison. Bacon, hot dogs, little smokies, ham, spam, kielbasa.....You get the idea. Whatever was on hand. But, the flavor was almost always the same because of how she doctored them. Very similar to this but, with mollases. Game changer. Baked in the oven for several hours until all the beans were tender and it thickened up. No runny beans. Everybody thinks of beans as a side dish. Nope, these were the star of the show. She'd boil up a bunch of potatoes. Mash them. Put the beans over the top. Mmmm. Still do it once in awhile. And have you ever been to that cookout where someone heated a can of beans for 5 minutes? Running all over your plate and you just have that cheap plastic fork? Crush a handful of plain potato chips into them. You can thank me later. Lol.
My dad has a saying. If your beans taste like doo doo cold the next day, then they probably did when hot. It's true. If they rock in your lunch pail the next day, you got a keeper recipe.

If you're worried about bacon grease splattering all over the inside of the oven if you cook it there, you can always put some aluminum foil on the skillet to keep that from happening. You don't even have to put the foil on there tightly, since it's not going to be moving around. An added bonus is that you'll have more bacon grease left over for other meals.

I was a cook in the Army and we always baked the bacon in the oven it saved a lot of time because we would prep it the night before by just putting it on baking sheets and then in the morning we would just put them in the oven and let it bake no one had to watch it just wait for the timer to go off

My Mother called it 'Rocky Mountain Potato Salad" she tossed in cubed potatoes. I just made this for a brunch. It is great for the main dish with a side salad and fruit.

I have a similar recipe that doesn’t have ground beef but includes bacon. I made these beans today. I use a different liquid to sauté the vegetables with plus some additional spices and ingredients. My recipe has been in our family for over sixty years. The combination of the two recipes was out of this world delicious. Thanks for making this video. I use many of your recipes and ideas.

Boy Howdy. That sure does look yummy. My Father made a dish very close to this recipe. It was so good that no matter how much was taken to any family event.. it was always swooped in on and everyone was always asking him to write down the recipe. But the funny thing was he didn't go by a written recipe, He just cooked it up and everyone simply loved it. 😊

Thank you so much for the Cowboy Beans recipe!! That will come in handy the last weekend in July for our Family Reunion that we have every year. We all bring something for the meal on Friday night, then we switch out on Saturday night and different family members supply hamburger meat and buns and fixings or hotdogs or both! Then another family member brings cookies, cakes, brownies or makes ice cream! Then Sunday after lunch everyone heads home! Then the next year, two other family members are picked!
Thanks again Becky, you are a blessing!! Love you!!

When I was growing up in the 60s and 70s, occasionally, my mom would make stir fry ground beef and pork n beans over toast. SOS. Slop on a shingle. My grandpa and uncles made it also. I learned how and evolved. My dad always said SOS was a Boy Scout favorite.

I love this recipe. I've made it several times and it's always a hit. Yes I've noticed that some cuts of ground beef have no fat at all. I've put some vegetable oil in some of those dried ground beef so it doesn't stick to the pan.
