This is hands-down the best review of this game that I've yet to see. I really love Five Parsecs and you've highlighted all of the things that really make it great, and presented them in a charming fashion. I love your crew! I enjoy discussing the game with you and the others on the Discord. Regards, HeadHunter.
This is straight up the best review of this game on youtube (and i've watched any and all that I could find). The work that you've done to present the game here is tremendous and I will be purchasing it based on your recommendation and you have gained a subscriber in me. Thank you and I hope your hard work pays off and your channel gains the level of traffic that it's quality clearly deserves.
This is a fantastic review, thank you so much for taking the time to actually play through a campaign and not just do a quick read through. You can really see the passion you got from this game! I've been playing Warhammer since I was a teen but honestly spent more time playing X-Com in practice, so I really appreciate that comparison, it sounds like a great fit during these times when it's extra hard to hit the table with people :)
Great review, insightful, knowledgeable and comprehensive. I love your painting style, the games look the part. All-in-all very inspiring. Thanks for taking the time to do this. I'm off to watch your other videos now.
Just stumbled across this. Gotta say, you’ve presented a fantastic, comprehensive and highly entertaining rundown of this game. Truly enjoyed your review. Thank you for this! Liked and subscribed for sure.
This was an incredible review & very satisfying to watch, with stellar production values. The structure & cadence of your voice is enjoyable. Thank you.
I love your review style. In-depth and thorough well punctuated with moments of humor, interesting camera cuts, etc (love the One Piece reference). Not to mention the dedicated marathon-style testing method. Mad props. I bought reign in hell based on your review and will be playing this one as well. Tabletop has become such a huge space it's hard to navigate the options. As someone who heavily enjoys narrative play, a solo option is fantastic to me. I had no idea this was a genre/option in tabletop wargaming. Your videos are awesome keep it up and I'll keep watching.
An excellent review with fantastic miniatures and terrain. Love your painting style. As I watched your video, the visuals really did a great job of immersing me into this little game world you’ve created. I’ve recently received the book and have future plans of running this in 15mm scale. Your review has inspired me to get back to work on this project. Thanks!
just a small correction - while Five Parsecs from Home *was* originally an expansion for FiveCore skirmish system, from the second edition onwards it has its own, completely different system, with basically nothing in common with FiveCore. While Five Leagues from Borderlands is 5PfH Fantasy, and Five Klicks from Zone is 5PfH Post-Apo, but Five Men at Kursk is definitely not 5PfH WW2.
Fantastic video! Really enjoyed watching and appreciate all the work you put into it to deliver a fair review, instructional video and compelling tale all in one. High production standards carried me all the way to the end in one sitting. You've made me buy it.
Great review! I'm glad you're playing and covering other games. I found your channel from your Reign in Hell game. And while I've always been interested in Gaslands, I'm sort of interested in every game, haha. I love how in depth and informative your reviews are! Some of these so called "review" videos are someone unboxing and flipping through the rulebook, which doesn't help me at all. I have this pre-ordered and have been painting up a ton of sci-fi minis for Stargrave (series on my channel) so I'll have quite a bit of minis ready to go.
Thanks! There's definitely value in getting your eyes on the product. But I do acknowledge the lack of more considered discussion, especially of smaller, less popular systems. I do get why, though. Getting enough games in to really have a solid foundation for your opinion can take ages.
@@CementSaul 100% agree with that. I've seen some board game reviews where the reviewers clearly only played a handful of times to get the review out ASAP. You really need a ton of plays to get a better feel.
I haven't even played a single combat turn yet (only rolled my crew and ship) and already, Five Parsecs has become my favorite tabletop game _ever_ . Your review really captures all the reasons why. I'm working on building and painting my crew and their adversaries (and probably the unnecessary indulgence of their ship) but I'm eagerly looking forward to rolling some dice on the tabletop too!
Happy to hear that! The ship was actually a really handy terrain piece. Having the crew deploy on or near it at the start of the mission makes things so much more immersive, I highly recommend having one handy.
@@CementSaul Someone posted a Pelican from HALO so I bought the kit. I also have the Hornet dropship from Mantic but it doesn't look like something capable of interstellar travel. Maybe as a shuttle to an unseen orbital ship.
A sci-fi solo game? Well, count me in. It's always hard lately to get my game group together, so getting into a Solo game sounds like a lot of fun. I have a metric ton of Warhammer 40k, fantasy and other miscellaneous bits and parts that I can use for this one
Thank you for a clear concise and above all a very entertaining look at this system, i'm a mature returning gamer/modeller and can't wait to try "Five Parsec's out...Thank you so much and keep up the great work...Thank you.
I have been looking for a game like this for years now, with my time divided between family and work, I really have taken a shine to solo/co-op wargaming as my free time is precious as you get older, and its the best way to come down from a busy week listening to music and having a drink with a buddy.
Excellent review thank you. I did far less prep and played my first two campaign turns with some unpainted minis I never got around to finishing for Stargrave, and half a dozen wild west gunslingers, in a papercraft wild west town dressed with Gaslands' scatter terrain. The result wasn't as visually pleasing as yours but was more than satisfying enough, especially with the attachment I have already formed to some of my crew :D
Thanks for the list of STL sources. How many broad categories were you able to get your list of enemy types down to? That was something I was trying to do, but got overwhelmed. I'd like to see your list if you were able. Good video!
@@CementSaul so, you got it down to 9 broad categories. That's way more manageable, and easier to expand to from starting at the 3 he recommended. Thank you again!
Could you do a video about how to combine 5 parsecs with Ironsworn:Starforged? Some say they fit perfectly (5 parsecs for battles, Starforged for the rest)
Great review, thanks! Subscribed. I'm going to check out Ironsworn and Rangers of Shadow Deep. I'd be happy to see your review of Starport Scum and Chrome Hammer as well. Cheers and good gaming!
Not that I know of! It's pretty standard preshade + translucent wash/ink/glaze then some chunky highlights. The highlights for this set of models in particular was more exaggerated than my usual.
Just bought this, having a lot of so far making up the story as I go. Playing with 3d printed minis and cardstock terrain on a kill team size board, game rules scale great.
This was an amazing review. I’m watching it to prepare for my first playthrough. I have one question: I can’t find where it says all humans get one luck? I see it says they can have MORE than 1 luck, but only the captain gets 1 at character creation, barring background events
Quick question: Maybe I misheard you, but I thought you said that Humans all start out with a point of luck? I'm looking through the book and I don't see that. I only see where the leader starts out with a point of luck. Am I missing something?
Yeah you're right, humans can exceed one point of luck, but don't start out with any spare. I might have been confused since I only had the one human in my crew, who was also my leader.
Heya, I dont know if it is intentional or not, but your STL List document is all Gaslands parts. And I was really looking forward to seeing the Ship and the terrain you feature.
@@CementSaul you wont regret it. 2 boardgames, Melee & Wizard. That can become a full fledged rpg. They hace pre programed solo aventures AND material from the 70s to this Day. Its pretty awesome
Lol i was just playing the bug hunt version with a crappy dry erase arrow on a 6 sided dice. I saw the guy use an 8 sided dice for an arrow and i am actually ashamed that never occurred to me.
I've had two campaign turns so far and both times it was against rampaging enemies. First five Krorgs and then second five wall crawlers. Both fights on planets with 10 inchs of visibility! Eliminate Krorgswas th first one and the second was a delivery to a station overun with wall crawlers. Somehow all crew survived so far.
Wait humans start with luck? I think thought the rule was your leader has luck to start but humans can aquire more thna one luck but don't start with one?
So I guess this is not a game for beginners who are unable to bookkeep/resource management? I love the backstories and premise but I doubt I would be able to do all the pre/post game stuff...im bad at math too😢...or is there someway even an idiot could learn and enjoy this game?
I think most of the math is front loaded, once you get rolling it only changes numbers a little bit at a time. That said, yes it does need a fair bit of bookeeping to run a campaign.
There's quite a bit of it, but it's not hard. And it doesn't matter if you make a mistake. If you're someone who hates books I could see you having an issue, but I don't think it's beginner unfriendly. On the contrary, there are many tips on making it easy to get in to. Sorenson doesn't assume the reader has played a wargame before.
