central beijing has all the government buildings so that's why there's more security. unfortunately that's also where some of the main tourist sites are so you just have to deal with a few extra checkpoints. it's also worse when foreign diplomats and heads of state are in town which might cause access to some places like tiananmen square to be closed completely. for me it's no big deal because you are only going to these places once but I know some tourists have a fit about extra checkpoints lol. after a certain amount, you have to verify your id/card with the payment apps as a part of fraud prevention. should only take a few minutes and it should be cleared within a few hours. also make sure your credit card company knows you are in china so they don't cut it off from your bank side. if you are staying over a week in china, get a local number because it makes many things so much easier. just visit any telecom/mobile store in a local area and it should only be around $15 for a month. you can do more things with apps when you have a local number. also in the payment app there is a transport mini-app. set that up so you don't have to buy a ticket every time. it will generate a qr code on your phone so you can just enter the metro, bus, etc without having to buy a ticket.
Welcome to Beijing. In the past, when the economy was underdeveloped, I often asked you, "Have you eaten?" That was decades ago. Nowadays, greetings are rarely done in this way. Just say hello directly. Otherwise, it will be difficult for Chinese people to understand.

welcome to Beijing! One little tip. Chinese (as a language) has four tones. And what a word or a sentence could mean is “tone-sensitive”. The reason why the old lady in the alley and the little boy here 3:38 could not understand your greeting (ni chi le ma) is that you said it in completely wrong tones.😂😂😂 it sounded like some random syllables to them. The right tone is nǐ chī lē má. I suggest you follow the pronunciation in the google translation app and practice more😊
