Lave net fishing on the River Severn

  • The 'Lave net fishermen' are a unique band of people who are keeping up the ancient art of fishing on the challenging waters of the River Severn in Monmouthshire.
    Here is a short film I produced which captures this special tradition.

    This used to be the same on the river parrett my old neighbour jack sharren did it at Bibby docks and the pawlett hams the licence for it is now been removed and is no more also the salmon butts have gone as have the folk that did it thy used to sell cooked mussels in a pint glass in the pubs in the winter month to make a Bob or two always gave away large mullet thy had no market value but were good eating from Burt bridgwater

    Lave netting on the Severn, Haalf netting in the Solway. Virtually the same it seems, The two nouns are not too far apart to be disassociated. Still magical though.

    are you fishing off the peninsula at the former Army Apprentice College at Chepstow? I hope so because if you do I have a little story to tell you..
