So, having played and recorded every other Last Ninja game on the C64 and Amiga, I felt duty-bound to finish the series by doing a longplay of Last Ninja 3 on the Amiga.
Surprisingly, it's not just a straight copy of the C64 version. It shares many similarities, but there are different screens, items to collect and even an entirely new level that isn't even in the C64 version.
Unfortunately, these additions don't make up for the game's shortcomings, of which there are many. In fact, it took me several days to record this because I just wasn't enjoying it.
Firstly, it's much, much harder than the C64 version, which wasn't easy to begin with.
Much of this difficulty can be attributed to the control scheme. Armakuni is stuck rigidly to the isometric viewpoint and can only turn at angles of 90 degrees and run in straight lines. This is made worse by the fact that the developers included a huge number of holes, cliffs and traps to fall down/into; far more than the C64 version.
Combat is, as ever, punishing to say the least. Most enemies need to be defeated twice before they're killed outright and they'll do huge amount of damage to you, even if your bushido meter is full. As always, you can avoid combat by jumping as the enemies freeze whilst you're mid-air (hence why I jump a lot in the recording), but you lose bushido if the opponent is still alive when you leave a screen.
Perhaps the most unforgivable problem with the game was a bug on the final level whereby collecting the crowbar before the quill pen meant that you couldn't create the final scroll; unless you have the scroll, Kunitoki doesn't attack and can't be killed. It wasn't until I replayed the level and found that if I collected the quill then the crowbar, the scroll appeared in my inventory.
The game isn't a total travesty, however. The graphics are very nicely drawn/animated and the music by Sonix Systems and Reyn Ouwehand is pretty good, although I still prefer the C64 version.
Ultimately, the game is just far too hard to enjoy. Trying to complete the foundry level with the precision jumps between the floating platforms was a complete pain.
If System 3 ever do an HD version of the LN games, I sure hope they base them on the C64 versions and not the Amiga ones.
Enjoy!

The sound track in this game is TIGHT AF. Level 1 and Level 3 are among my favorites. Greatest machine ever. I'll never forget after trial and error I was able to beat this game. All those notes written down on paper of what to do. Then one day 5 hours later I was done! And here its over in 33 min, LMFAO. I thought 5 hours for this game was an accomplishment, plus hours of learning and failing. I love this game and the soundtrack is amazing,.
5 hours only ? I reckon I've spent half that on level 1 alone and still am without a clue.
Is it me or C64 has tighter intro?
I mean, beside the color palette, look how well the sound matches the action on C64 intro and overall pacing.
Totally agree.
Ivan Isakovic totally agree , there's something about that machine , I always loved the C64!
yes dude we all feel that feel.
The C64 intro is vastly superior both in terms of music and in terms of character movement and camera angle.
I remember when this had a promotion at the European Computer Trade Fair 1991 and i got a picture taken with Jayne Middlemiss who was the boothbabe there!
This game is pure awesome! By sheer force of its unique personality it wins people over!
The music is absolutely amazing. Great melodies. As shows the good sound quality of the Amiga. I've played the game many times and then the melodies I know today, especially the melody of the first level. Yes, the game is very difficult.
One of the first games I played, I think I had Last Ninja 2 as well before it. Nostalgia...
The Commodore Amiga was such a awesome computer back in those years late 1980's to mid 1990's and it's still a great machine to play with :)
Had OS for mouse, file manager, 4096 colors instead of 256, good sound card when PC's most had the nasty eardrum tearing buzzer, had popular 8-bit games ported.
But it was no longer the cheap gaming machine like C64. So parents picked what they actually needed for work - same what they had at work and were familiar with - PC's.
@@KretinoSantino Your Amiga worked hard for sure :)
@@kzbxvz I had C64, then Am80386. But luckily, my best friend got Amiga 500 inbetween this period, I have a chance to experience most exciting period of gaming throughout various platforms.
@@KretinoSantino Did you ever upgrade your Amiga 500 to breathtaking 1 MegaByte ?
@@kzbxvz I didn't have Amiga. I had C64.
THE LAST NINJA on the Commodore 64 and Amiga is so legendary game franchise,
I even drew the fan arts, known as
THE LAST FURRY NINJA.
I shared the videos of the fan art works on my RUclips channel 😺👍.
What a great game. First two are classics but intro is a killer in here. Great music also and some good puzzles.
the amiga was legit.. not many people in america seemed to have it though, it was big in europe. This kid who used to live near me when i was a kid did have one, he also had a box of mislabeled/unlabeled disks.. just going through that box and figuring out what was on those disks was so much fun.
US Amiga market was mainly graphic/video design and editing - it never caught on as a games machine though.
That music from 21:04 - 24:40. Man, so memorable and nice. One of the best things about the amiga version
Yep. Great sound, The Prodigy should remaster it. Could be good.
I loved 1 and 2 on c-64, this one I didn't like, despite all amiga power
"Real hatred... is TIMEless" - I don't know what it's about, but makes an awesome intro to an awesome intro!
8:50 for the most epic battle in video game history!
They spent more time swiping the air than each other 😂
Thanks for uploading :) Brings back a lot of memories!
This game basically teaches how to punch in the eyes with colors.
C64 music is the boss 👌
I never played the C64 version of this except for the original and the sequel , part 3 i only experienced on the Amiga and im glad i did, it is so much better than the C64 but i can't say the same for part 1 and 2 which really shined on the C64. Anyway, great memories.
I could have loved that game but I just hate games where enemies don't stay down and constantly respawn. That's because I hate running past enemies instead of beating them yet if they constantly respawn, you cannot keep beating them as your energy is not constantly respawning.
MOONSTONE Thunder ⚡ sound
Wheres the sound effects the C64 lacked them due to having no free sound channels but the Amiga had no excuse it's a 1985 gaming PC beast.
Yet the music still sounded better on the C64, go figure
I don't know why, but the more colors and complex music this game gets the less interesting it seems. I'm probably biased by having played the C64 Last Ninja 1 and 2 and when this came along 256 color games with FM-synthesized music were too common. Maybe like when movies started being in color, they had TOO MUCH color.
the broken aeroplane @26:41 is a nice touch IMHO, how did it end up in space
The music, when compared to the C64, really stinks.
So true man! Was about to say the same!
@@thedutchfisherman7078 But the game itself was superior in terms of graphics against the C64. Granted it should have been, but the C64 for LN3 was definitely disappointing compared to its predecessors for this game.
Sweetinfantbabyjesus my ears! 🤮
No. Everything but the water theme suck ass from a straw on C64. Actually whole LN3 on C64 is diarrhea compared to LN2 and Amiga's LN3.
I mostly agree..., but the music for the new Limbo version is perhaps my favourite song of the trilogy tbh
Couldn't they at least have optimized the colors for the Amiga instead of just porting it straight from the 16-color Atari ST version? Amiga can do twice as much colors and has 4 times larger master color palette.
To be fair, the game does look pretty good. I guess it was easier to do the graphics for the lowest common denominator (ST) and port it to the Amiga, rather than do it the other way around. Either way, the Amiga LN games weren't a patch on the C64 versions ;)
Matt Gray might be remixing this whole album soon
The only Last Ninja that was ever good on the Amiga
Come on, the Ninja Remix is not that bad
For me personally, Last Ninja 3 was the only success on the Amiga since they actually took advantage of the hardware. 1 and 2 were largely the same as the original versions but laggier, uglier, etc. Music was compressed and the colours were all muddled together. Compare it to 3. It's much more beautifully drawn, doesn't lag as much, and they made a new soundtrack instead of ruining what was good.
Last ninja would make an amazing movie.
The Last Jedi will be coming out later this year....close enough? ;)
DementedCaver if Luke can only walk diagonally, and takes 20 goes jump across a river....
the last samurai (close enough)
I played this game 1993 and i not know Win very hard game but very good Graphics
It's amazing what we put up with back in the day. This trilogy seemed so awesome (on the c64), but the control method and the fighting mechanic is just awful. It's technically a terrible game, but just so cool.
The c64 version is considerably cut down from the Amiga version - which you'd expect, but there's nothing here that the 64 couldn't have done. There's so little animation (those 'bosses' are comical by Amiga standards) plus the music is nowhere near as good. Clearly, the higher spec machine used fashionable music samples which sound really lame, now. Synthesised stuff has just aged better - even the ST version has better music!
Was a big fan before this one came out and it all seemed so slick that I really enjoyed it. But once I'd finished it, it felt a bit of a let down after 2, really. Didn't help that the end of the game was rubbish. Couldn't the Shogun stand up??
The Shogun was actually Yoshimitsu from Tekken all along! But why wasn't there any ending text in this "better" version? The C64 had punctuation-less ending text scrolling past as the Ninja dude looks at the sunset--which you shouldn't really do as it's bad for your eyes. I digress..
Wait, there was a part 3?! Didn't know this.
Most of the original team that did the first two left before this game started development.
The music is a masterpiece! And the composer isn't mentioned?
I believe it's Reyn Ouwehand.
Ah yes, it IS Reyn Ouwehand. Check 1:00 you'll see him mentioned under sound design. :)
He also composed the C64 version's music, which was actually different.
Strangely, the C64 music is far better.
@Retro Storm Your opinion is equally subjective! 'imho' is redundant.
Reyn Ouwehand 😏❤️👍
and why the hell Armakuni can somersault but can't perform a flying kick??! I've never got that.
Guys, if you like this, check out this game called Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun. It's a ninja-themed isometric tactical stealth game that feels like the old Commandos games on PC. It's available on Steam, GOG, and PlayStation 4. Here's the Steam link: store.steampowered.com/app/418240/Shadow_Tactics_Blades_of_the_Shogun/
those of you arguing which was better, c64 or amiga, remember both computers were the sme company, commodore
Could not play this one on the amiga as it sucked like 95% of the System3 games on 16bit systems. Thank you for playing it through so i could see what i did not miss. Also not as good as the first two games on the C64. May be the second game should really be the last ninja.
So you dont need to fight anything and just jump past them all game?
Since when does health regenerate by itself in Last Ninja games? The first opponents almost killed you. How does this work?
This games music was sick y’all just nostalgic haters nothing beat last ninja 1 original but this one comes 2nd out of all the games
I only put myself through the pain for my adoring fans ;D LN3 is a lot better to watch than it is to play - in fact, I was just watching the footage back and thought "if I hadn't just played it then I'd say it was pretty good!" Also, did you see the fact they actually had an oriental arms consultant in the credits?? Delusions of grandeur or what?
Mighty 90 the controls are awful. It's very hard to pick items. It's hit detection is terrible.
Its beautiful isometric view but yeah you just get frustrated.
What element is the new stage based on, theres earth, wind, water, fire and what is the new 5th level element is it based on?
Void - it's not really an element, but it looks cool 🙂
No like, the extra stage with the mountains and yellow bricks
I heard it's Limbo, and it would make sense. First it's Earth, Wind, Water, Fire. The last one is Void. So I guess the fifth has got to be in-between the normal elements and Void, and thus, it's Limbo. It's probably my favourite level in the game, thanks to that god awesome music!
Thank you
5:35 who the hell is that big guy
Nice playthrough!
For me, this game is the epitomy of just how bad a 16-bit version can be compared to a lowly C-64. Techically this is far superior. The graphics are ok, and somebody composed their ass off with the music.
It just doesn't have the sense of style at all. Case in point: Intro and outro. Compare C64 and Amiga versions. 64 version has the music composed to action perfectly. On Amiga it's so bad, looks like they didn't even try. And the final boss with his stupid skull looks like an animated metal poster.
Even the graphics look wrong. On ST and Amiga, they had the chance to cram more detail into the larger sprites. As a result, characters look puffy. Almost fat =)
I think Shogun Kunitoki as the Final Boss in this looks far superior to the C64 version. Compare the two .. there really is no comparison. All the second version in the C64 was was a Joe Shmo swinging numchucks ... something Kunitoki never wielded.
This was one Last Ninja where the Amiga beat the C64 in everything.
@@MystikWizard OK. No accounting for taste, but I remember reading that that's what System 3 said when they were making the game. They went all out on the Amiga version to make it the best version possible. And it does show in many ways that you couldn't do on C-64. Glad it landed for some people.
Wait, did you not use the bellows in the game? Or did I miss it?
They made a third?
what the red/green dragon was for?
It's a measure of the player's Karma(?) Level - it fills up the more you fight people; I think you're supposed to gain attack power as it fills up. It's been a while since I played it so I could be wrong 🙂
Oh, ok! I was totally unaware of it!! Thanks!
To be precise - more green dragon means less damage done to you. You gain green by hitting enemies with kicks and fists or with same weapon they are using. Using different weapon reduces it. Item founding slot shows enemy´s weapon. Edit. also, running away from screen when enemy is not on the ground, "karma" is reduced but only a tiny bit.
When its fully green you can fight the end of level boss, fond memories of this game. Music on the final level & Lava level are great
It's the Bushido honor metre. Green means more honor by beating the BOSS enemy with the same weapon. The only way to get to the next level.
Those who think the c64 had any more on the Amiga than a slightly more memorable sound track are letting the nostalgia aspect go to their heads a bit. I'm basing that on the idea that most people who had commodores at the time wish they had an Amiga. All things being equal the actual sound and graphics are leaps and bounds better.
DrBIeed The C64 soundtrack was miles ahead both in terms of quality of musical composition and aural ambiance.
DrBIeed I had both machines but preferred the 64 version over the Amiga
The amiga soundtrack used really bad samples... there are times when an actual sound chip rather than a sound sampler just sounds better
Sure, bar a few games I wish I had an Amiga before I got a Megadrive. I've spent a ton of time emulating one to fill that void even.
The best game in the series is by far The Last Ninja 2 though - which runs like a pig on Amiga. Even if it _did_ have better sound or gfx; it's beyond painfully un-optimized.
man, this was an awful conversion
Yup, the cartoon rock in LV1 ... couldn't even match the scenery. C64 is legendary status for this game!
It's not a conversion. It was the primary version of the game and superior in every measurable way compared to C64. But it doesn't come together as a superior version at all. Everything from palette, to character design to music is just off, and bland.
@@EvilKris 'Played better' isn't very measurable, is it? And frankly, C64 version had issues there with worse jump bugs, glitches and worse level mapout than Amiga. But we're getting into subjective issues there.
So: measurable is the term I use. 😊Count pixels, colors, frames of animation, enemy types, sprite size, sound samples and Amiga is superior. But it doesn't come together.
C64 is the superior version because the inferior hardware. You can't change much, because the hardware doesn't support it and that saved the day. On c64 this game felt the same as previous last ninja games.
Of course there is still the ridiculous change in combat mechanics, which made avoiding battles necessity instead of option, but it is much easier on c64 because the game is slower. And if you play cassette version you could play the same level infinite times, which made learning curve bearable.
For me this was the only last ninja i didnt like, the movement and controls was really finicky and jank it was awkard to pick up items and jumping was a pain when compared to the previous 2 even on the c64 version and on top of that the length of the game was quite short compared to the others. I would have loved to have played the 3D version they were bringing out on the OG Xbox the screenshots looked amazing but from what I heard it got cancelled which was a shame I wonder if there is a prototype floating around somewhere.
I never wanted to play this on the Amiga back then and I certainly don't now. The C64 games of this series absolutely crap all over the Amiga versions and why is it that Kunitoki at the end (I presume that's him again) is just sitting in his chair as if he's frozen shooting crappy little fire balls? The guy is an absolute mammoth yet naaaah... I'll make a game where he just sits there like a block of ice 🥴
Last Ninja 2 more better game than!
Is it me or the game is a little fast😅
Sid > Paula
Even though the Amiga version is technically superior, it misses the charm of the c64 version.
The color palette and the not existent dithering/anti-aliasing is bad. Last Ninja 1+2 on the C64 is much better.
There was a 3!?! Was this only on Amiga?
No - it came out on C64 first.
Cool. I don't recall it at all. I live in Australia and it either may not have been sold here, or it may have been when I jumped ship to Super Nintendo :)
unplayable game
21.29 Where is the ladder?
Really?
Amiga version is a crap.Maybe more colorful but still a crap.
Another terrible conversion :O
This game was SHIT!!!!
no gameplay sound effects cuz the theme music is all. come on thats gay.
Horrible graphics and sound.
Well, graphic is really nice but too big for such a game. Ninja Remix graphics was much better. C64 music for LN3 is much better than the Amiga version here.
Whole Last Ninja series were horrid. As much they've tried to get maximum out of 8-bit computers, they somehow didn't even consider gameplay.
One of worst games actually. Only popular because being ninja was every young boy wet dream at that time.
@Retro Storm That's called opinion.
I have shocking news for you .... despite what your mom say, you're not the only person on planet entitled to have an opinion.
Especially when I've played Last Ninja 1/2 and you didn't.
