    I think the justification for Hayate being callous towards the clones is the sparring match he had with Ryu in DOA5 in which he tells him to not be driven by emotion. It's a very weak justification but its there. Honestly, Ryu and Hayate's roles during the confrontations should be flipped. Hayate should be the one pitying the clones, and Ryu should be killing them with no trouble since he knows they aren't the real one and they'll kill Kasumi if he lets them live.
    great video

    I think the answer to most of your issues with Hayate specifically come down to Shinobi Culture in general. You see, while it is true that Shinobi didn't behave quite like Samurai they still believed duty took priority over everything else. Not that emotional bonds can't be formed at all, just that you have to be willing to sacrifice them for the good of your village, or at least to abide by the customs surrounding them.
    This manifests in Hayate in two ways. The first of these, having no emotional reaction to killing clones of his sister, this is actually pretty straightforward. It's because swallowing your emotions to complete your missions is exactly what shinobi were trained to do. Shinobi had to complete their missions and better their clans first and foremost. Kasumi is actually the one in the wrong by this standard, because she acted on her own when she hunted down Raidou in DOA1 as revenge for Hayate. Keep in mind, during that time, she was the successor to take over in the event Hayate couldn't do so, and she was receiving training for it prior to leaving the village. When she left to kill Raidou, she put the entire Mugen Tenshin clan at risk, not only by leaving them without a successor but also by risking the reveal of their secrets, although the Ninja Gaiden games seem to suggest that that doesn't matter all too much anymore. This is why Mugen Tenshin Shinobi were hunting Kasumi down in her DOA3 ending.
    However, it's worth noting that in DOA4 Kasumi's status was changed from Runaway to Exiled, indicating that Hayate was the one who exiled her to protect her from the clan that was hunting her down, most likely because there isn't a really good way to convince anyone in the clan to allow Kasumi to return, although he and Ayane still work with her from time to time.

    • @DynomiteX246
      @DynomiteX246 4 года назад +17

      You know, I have looked into this more, and this only got me to not like Hayate and the whole Mugen Tenshin Clan in general even more. I mean what they have done is understandable at least, but I feel this could have given rise to a much more interesting storyline for this whole series. The deconstruction of traditionalism.
      Kasumi would continue to be more disillusioned by her clan she was shown to be groomed to be their Princess. But grow to hate it not just because of how they treat her, but how they treated Ayane. She was treated as trash, which spread the seeds to her and Ayane being enemies. (I'll get to her in her own video.) After many times her own family screwed her, this gets her thinking about just leaving Japan. However, her love for her brother and sister would get the better of her. (And mostly her friends she would make. Cause this is important for later.)
      However, Donnaven would learn from last time and tried to use their old ways against them, and thus, Mugen Tenshin would take a huge blow, the whole village would burn, and Kasumi's father dies in the process. Whether he apologizes to Kasumi is up to you guys. Kasumi would show up and get the drop on the enemy, not just because she was super strong (although it helps) but she doesn't follow the old ways. She is not Mugen Tenshin anymore. She is her own woman. A warrior that punishes evil her way.
      By the end, she see's the clans sorry state, she'd make the decision of either staying or leaving for good. Or Hayate makes the decision for her seeing he is now the new leader of the clan. Whether she stays or leaves, the whole story between her clan hunting her should be over.
      Personally, I'd have her leave her clan and live a normal life, only using her ninja skills to protect her new friends she made in the DOA Tournament. After what her clan has done to her, I just feel she deserves better, and none of this didn't have to be. Hayate could have done a better job showing his love for his sister, and Ayane...I'll save her for another video. You can call me harsh, but being an older sibling, and Kasumi being my favorite character in the whole series, I can't help but be a bit passionate about this.
      Plus you could have a story not done in fighting games before. The only time this sort of story was done in Shin Godzilla. We already get that the ninjas are the biggest badasses in this series and others. But this could show the ultimate downsides of the ninja lifestyle, and humanizing Kasumi even more, and possibly Hayate if they choose that route.
      Well damn, looks like I just made myself a Wasted Plotential here. Assuming people would care enough to read anyways.

    Nice version but it was in the plot that to stop all pain/abomination, etc. they needed to kill all the clones.
    From the "emotional" scene with Hayabusa and the dying Kasumi clone also hinted during the epilogue were Phase was shedding a tear after the Bayman/soldiers incident. (all in DOA5)

  • @MrDarksol

    Shit Dead or Alive had a lot of clones and it really is wasted how they treated all of them. Not to mention Hayate is still an asshole for not even trying to bring his own sister back home which makes me feel even more bad for Kasumi. Poor runaway Shinobi needs a hug and fantastic job with the video!

  • @somerandomname75
    @somerandomname75 5 лет назад +27

    I agree, it always struck me as weird that Kasumi, Hayate, and Ayane somewhat stayed in the same place narratively at the end of DOA 5, despite technically being allies.
    I'd also like to add onto this by having Ryu ask Ayane and Hayate whether they still intend to carry out the clan's orders, recounting his own hidden turmoil from having to fight his own father, and maybe his uncle, but that's kind of a stretch. Basically have him ask whether they have that emotional strength, and will be able to hide that kind of pain.
    And if possible, maybe also have Momiji and/or Rachel talk to Ayane about it before the assault on MIST, considering that both lost their only sisters, and probably don't want Ayane to inflict that kind of trauma on herself. Just my two cents.
    My only real criticism is that I don't get how Alpha awaking would wake up Kasumi from her coma in your version. Other than that, great video!

    My issues with the clones:
    - it was all ok until they told us the Kasumi we play as for half of the Doa5 story was another clone.
    That came out of nowhere.
    Ok, we already saw different clones in doa2, but none of those really imitated kasumi exactly.
    - Alpha 152 end was a bit anticlimatic, considering it was not the real Kasumi who did that
    - Phase 4 was very mistreated in Doa6. I expected a deep emotional conflict between her and the real Kasumi. Instead, she was max produced and placed as a mere minion -_-
    So, all we know, basically, is that every single Phase 4 has emotional conflicts, but none of those is going to do anything about that.
    I was ok with doa5 story, overall, because it was still open for opportunities in doa6. But doa6 story, as we all know, ended up being really rushed.
    Disappointing

      well to be fair i think a majority of us were more distracted by the... "titillating" visuals and I think cause similar to senran kagura because they saw that as the main selling gimmick everything was focused and centered around that while the story either gets buried and has poor execution or just isn't very well planned out leading to many plot holes that don't make sense even when the creators themselves try to explain it at panels or through official data books.

    • @TheSonic497

      @@Fureiji88 That's really not it. When Tagaki was still the producer for DOA, the storyline was at least cohesive up until 4. Then when he got fired from Koei, games like DOA 5 and Dimensions show up, and completely retconn and fuck up the story. While Tagaki wasn't such a good guy, he obviously cared for DOA, there's even interviews with the guy explaining his own version of how DOA 5s story would have happened, which sounds a lot better that whatever the fuck 5s story was.

    My expectations for doa6 story? That every single new character in last round would get explanations for their appearance.
    Except for Marie Rose and Nyotengu, because those two were clearly going to be secondary characters.
    What did we end up with?
    Honoka being Ayane's sister and Raidou's daughter with no explanations; Raidou coming back with a Frankenstein/anime exploit and dying immediately and without any interesting interactions; Phase 4 being casted as a mere mass produced minion.
    Man, that was worth the wait -_-

      Don't forget they have reused the half-siblings angle multiple times even in the same game of DOA6. I love the game but using the short barely hour-2 hour experience to tell an unknown story of two sets of half-sisters is frustrating. They revealed that Kokoro and Helena were half-sisters as well in the game for some reason which was executed poorly/cheesily (if you somewhat liked it). Now this means that Hayate is the brother of kasumi who is the half sister of Ayane through their mother who is the half sister of Honoka through their father. That right there is extremely convoluted. I have a feeling that they are going to reveal that in fact the whole cast is actually just one large family at this point in the next game, lol.

    • @pn33milan11
      @pn33milan11 5 лет назад +5

      it's just they could have used the character episodes way better, also for the ninjas.
      instead we have characters with just an episode (es: Bayman), who didn't develop anything after DOA5 (es: Eliot) and many opportunities wasted (es: Kasumi and Hayate not trying to solve the Runaway Shinobi issue; Hayate not trying to overcome the Epsilon project leftovers or the trauma from the previous Raidou encounter; Ayane not developping a relationship with Honoka and so on....)

    I've already created my own rewrite of the DoA timeline. A few changes I've made include: Victor Donovan being a sympathetic villain about the same age as Kasumi herself, Kasumi being welcomed back into the village after the DoA3 arc, and more. Of course, the hard part of that rewrite was anything after 4.

    Kasumi will never be aloud to come home, for two reasons.
    One, being a Nuknin is to much of character. It defined her pretty much all of character and motivations. What can they do with her, if she was aloud to come home ?
    Two, Even I'd Hayate is the Clan leader, in reality he have little power. The real power comes from the the Elders, and if anime have taught us anything. It's that a council of Elders and complete A holes. They are all traditionalists, so when Kasumi broke their laws. She become dead to them.
    I wish your idea of Ayane killing a clone of Kasumi, why thinking it was the real Kasumi and having a metal break down from it.

  • @spacewargamer4181
    @spacewargamer4181 5 лет назад +11

    I think that Hayate and Ayane killed the False Kasumi because when she gonne violent about fighting Alpha hurting others to get where she is no matter what, Hayate come to the conclusion of her being the Alpha in the prologue(that is not correct), so he decided to kill her and Hayabusa was the only one that thinked that they were rushed on that decission, thats why he probably shows a bit of sadness about her being murdered.
    There is too the bunisess about where is from the False Kasumi, my idea is simple, she is a survivor of one of the clone instalations destruction, Helena finded her and knowing that since her was not activated, and she didnt want to kill someone helpless that could have a real life she decided to make her free, but since she was a Kasumi clon the only changes that the laboratory data could let her do was about control his mind and insert or delete Kasumi combat data and memories, she deleted the "control weapon" part and to make her not creepout about the clons thing and herself she only give the memories of Kasumi until DoA1, making her run out to find Raidou to take revenge for what he did to her brother, but she finded the true, that would create on her a feeling of hatred to herself for being a clone that would make her more violent in her mission to destroy the other clones, finnaly making all end this way by the prejudice of Hayate.
    Fuck Hayate.

    As a Phase 4 & Kasumi alpha fan (specifically her Dimensions incarnation) I always found it frustrating that they are so horribly underutilized in the story. Then again, this is DOA, and it's been going around in circles with it's plot ever since the end of DOA4 (not including the plot lines that have absolutely no reason to be around at all since DOA2.... Example: the whole Leon/Zack interaction that NEVER GETS BROUGHT UP AGAIN EVER IN THE SERIES). Any level of progression that was slightly there when Itagaki was team head has practically been wiped out with the new guard so it just gets so frustrating when I see characters that obviously have potential to add some depth to the narrative just to be not utilized. Phase's mass-produced clones only being used for fodder in DOA6 while the cloaked one from DOA5's attack on Bayman's squadron (the one that actually spoke, has a conscience, and appears to truly not want to play her role as a generic super soldier clone) is no where to be found, wasting a full game of story in lieu of bringing Raidou officially back from the dead.... for like 5 MINUTES, in order to push Honoka as Ayane's half-sister. I wanted to see something akin to DOA5!Phase-4 be around struggling with her identity, maybe having Alpha's memories before Kasumi destroyed her, being born into committing murders she didn't want to make and knowing that she cannot be the real Kasumi yet wanting to be treated as a normal individual... but the 4 main ninja (with Kasumi finally being the one that sees this clone as different from the others) being relentless in killing her like the rest of her clone-mates... but of course, that won't happen, now will it? Dimensions gave me a sample of some interesting story stuff with how they handled Kasumi alpha and her interactions, motives & unique personality (before her transformation into 152, which snatched all that away and basically turned her into a generic doomsday clone), and now here I am wishing that would come back.
    Also, I swear I just want to delete Hayate from DOA's continuum and get Ein back. At least when he had amnesia he was tolerable. Dude literally does nothing but fold his arms, gets bodied at least thrice a game by DOAMIST (lol muhEpsilon), and orders Ayane around when it's clear Ayane does way more than him of importance... but then again that just me being petty. Ayane wound up holding the idiot ball herself in 6, too, and Kasumi just seemed to pop in and pop out and it really didn't mean much at all.
    ...at least I let Ayane kill her pops at the end of the story... Easily, ironically. That was more satisfying than it should have been.

    • @pn33milan11
      @pn33milan11 5 лет назад +5

      I agree Ein had more personality and Hayate had always been disappointing, up until doa5.
      In doa6 things get a little bit better for him, at least.
      He's still flat as a character, but at least he did things good, for the most part, this time around, and didn't get scolded or beaten around as many times as before.
      By not having Ryu around and not relying on Ayane in combat that much, also, he did show some more professionality.
      He didn't become on of the best characters, but i'd at least say i gets a plus this time.
      Ayane, sadly, showed a little incompetence in doa6, by letting Honoka get easily kidnapped while wasting time with a small fish like Marie Rose, and by easily falling in Christie's trap, who had been a joke in doa's story up until doa6.

    Anybody remember Phase 4's Costume 7 from DOA5?
    > *_Costume 7 - Tattered, leather, full bodysuit with metal around the chest that has the text "M.I.S.T", a pair of sandals, a tattered, pinkish-purple tube top, a pair of leather gloves, and large, broken shackles on the wrists._*_ - Pasted from the fandom._
    I didn't even pay it any mind until I looked closer and noticed the shackles on her wrists, realizing that it's not just a skimpy outfit for the sake of it;
    The metal device on her chest reminds me of what was on Jill from RE5. Maybe it is because of that device on her chest that she can't refuse orders, despite consciously desiring to, and if I'm not mistaken, none of her official costumes, excluding DLC, reveals her chest. I think it was intentional.
    This costume alone oozes the potential of a plotline that Phase-4 tried to escape MIST, similar to how Kasumi escapes in DOA2, but without help, she fails and is affixed with that device to ensure she ceases her resistance. This would explain why her bodysuit is tattered, and why the tube-top is sandwiched between her skin and the device.
    Speaking of the tube-top, it's obviously for censoring purposes, at first glance, but what if the tube-top and the sandals are a sign that she succeeded in escaping Donovan's clutches?
    It'd have been interesting if the lack of direct contact presented a window to resist the effects of her physical obedience to MIST and puts her in a similar position as Kasumi, being chased down by MIST instead of the Mugen Tenshin, while also trying to escape murder from the ninja clan. Hell, it'd serve as nice character development for Kasumi to see a literal reflection of her past year and seeing what decision she'll make.

    My biggest issues are the most interesting clones personality and story wise are just used for plot convenient story fights and an enemy to kill like the mass produced phase 4 or kasumi A just doing whatever the fuck the plot needs of her. Never actually developing their characters or utilising their distinctly human characterisations to have interactions with the main cast to give interesting conflicts and reflections on the characters feelings/actions towards each other.
    THEN the big bad non human clones being doa5 ending Phase and Alpha 152 both have their power and threat level kinda diminished by other clones existing in the plot. Kasumi could only just barely hold her own against Alpha in 4 setting her up as “the ultimate threat” yet is easily dispatched by a random kasumi clone with no impact or ramifications for it in 5.
    Then the doa5 phase is ALSO not connected to that random kasumi clone who btw dies without any impact or ramification to the story, who is then seen mimicking the other ninjas in a cool way. Fucking dies but then the clones that are ACTIVELY named after her in doa6 don’t have these same abilities nor the same impact her threat/unique skills she had.
    Every kasumi clone is used for plot convenience for a fight and not as unique or individual characters that truly shape the story in any significant way. Not to mention most if not all of them are just killed off in the story and their additions in games beyond their first appearance usually diminishes their impacts or weirdly miss-uses them.
    Gameplay wise they barely dispatch away from Kasumi than imo they really should do to diversify them. Only alpha 152 and phase in 6 really doing any level of true originality or distinct difference in their movesets/gameplay.
    Aesthetic wise Alpha 152 is like the most interesting in design and she’s a literally green light blob girl plus she’s also the most divergent in moveset to Kasumi. I want a real character out of these clones.
    I want a character whose personality, aesthetic presentation and moveset feels reminiscent to kasumi but is clearly off. Different, dark and twisted in some way to give key signs it’s not her. A singular clone to act as the true rival and main reason for Kasumi’s continued involvement in the plot and drive as a character. A Kasumi that makes you feel like you’re playing a truly genetically engineered character created by the fragmented dna/existence of kasumi but no where near replicating the more calm, controlled and morally good traits of her.
    Phase is boring, Kasumi alpha was short lived and wasted and Alpha was probably most distinct in design AND moveset yet didn’t even have a personality/voice to use. It’s just frustrating cause it never feels like any of these clones actually hit every mark to make an interesting character so they end up all feeling hollow.
    Worst part is besides having like at minimum two clones and a lot retconning I couldn’t see every story from each game being able to stay relatively canon where a clone appears make sense really.
    Like fully rewriting large parts of the story or just making a whole new one for 5 would probably have to have been done to make the clones not totally confusing.

    I've been a fan since the beginning, and i meant it, i always said: "If you look beyond the fanservice and Extremes, there's a really solid and unique gameplay and story" but now, at least for me, the story ended in 4, basically with itagaki getting fired from Team Ninja. When 5 came, i was expectant to see what could be, graphics were awesome, gameplay was innovating, but story... man... it felt like anime nowadays... just meh....with some highlights... but meh in general, then ultimate came, i said to myself, well, they did the same with 2, added characters that didn't fit or existed at the time, bunch of extras, so i was kewl, then ultimate.... Nyotengu... like... what was the problem with Tengu? or they just wanted to gender swap him? then what was the problem with adding him as an extra costume for Nyotengu or vice versa, Marie i said kewl, DOA didn't had that kind of character back then, the most closed to it was Lei Fang, so i said, fine, Honoka, being the most unoriginal, even her moves where a mashup of 5-6 other chars, then trying to explain it by saying she's the daughter of Raidou... Raidou being a frankenfuck, Diego... the most blant, plain, generic character EVER, at least Rig was interesting, original, REALLY FUN TO PLAY, and had something to say in the story, he's the son of Donovan, they even fucked up the fact that EVERY SINGLE CHARACTER had something to do in the game, not just crossroad the path of a character that does and fight me because you saw me pokemon shit, every ending was canon, and i loved that, now endings are... funny i guess? i'm never going to forget the first time i saw Brad Wong's ending in 3... it's just poetic and wholesome, Hitomi passing her father's test, Ein remembering he's really Hayate, and more, i'm going to keep on playing the games, but without expectancy, just as a memory of a game that really deserved better. cheers for your video, man.

    False Kasumi had potential to be a new sister & ally to original Kasumi. If I did 7, they’d resurrect her & have the 2 work together to free Project 4 & become a ninja trio specializing in confusion, not knowing which is which. Imagine not knowing which one is which when 1 stole something important & having to split your forces to chase after them. Naturally I’d retcon Kasumi 4 to be 1 character with a replication ability due to experimentation & possible have Alpha return, so False & 4 can prove themselves as more than another clone, like Alpha. Give the 2 character traits unique to them, like 1 enjoying comedy, while the other prefers tragedy. That’s just a bad example I pulled out of nowhere, but the point is there’s potential for a good story there. Maybe Vic Don decides to clone more characters & combine dna to create stronger soldiers, like a Genra-Raidou or a combination of Gaiden bosses, genetically engineered demons! Think of that & the 4 retcon would make sense economically, because MIST would want to conserve resources & creating 1 that can duplicate itself is cheaper than mass producting an army. If the other clones I mentioned had the power it be tough for the heroes to defeat them. Imagine an army of GR’s & boss demons.

    4:59 The fan-fiction here is great, but there is a problem. Hayabusa has never shown any respect for Kazumi. I think Ayane, Hayabusa, and Kazumi's relationship has never been fleshed out.
    Ayane and Hayate frequently teams up with Kazumi and never bad mouths her after DOA3. This would imply the 3 characters do not have any issues with one another or at least have respect for each other. However, also Hayabusa mentions at one point in the DOA5 story mode that Hayate "couldn't even deal with a traitor"... implying Hayate should have killed Kazumi to prove he is a competent ninja. This indirectly implies Hayabusa does not care about Kazumi's well-being if he is willing to mock Hayate for NOT killing his own sister. (Video evidence here: ruclips.net/video/5ax9vs9Wi20/видео.html )
    *All of this to say that Hayabusa would not even care about Kazumi's well being.*
    EDIT: Can we ship Hayate and Ayane as Ayate? Or... or do we not like incest? I don't like incest, but I'd ship-

      Ryu's motive in DOA1 was to protect Kasumi. And in 2, he fights her to make her leave the tournament for her safety. In 4, saves her from Helenar. In 5, he cradles the dying False Kasumi as she dies. And then protects her from some Alphas in 6.

I know the shinobi code of living and Kasumi brought this on herself by making a irrational decision to leave her home when it was in need of her help, but come on hayate is showing he's not acting like he hates kasumi, he hates her every being by his own choice like ayane but thanks ayame they actually made peace with each other, if only ayame could lecture hayate like she did ayane. "The bonds of family should outweigh any all codes of shinobi" and yet kasumi is unable to return to her home. So much for a loving family!
