It is my personal belief that Bong Joon-ho won several Oscars not just for Parasite but rather it was an amalgamation for all the masterpieces he created up to Parasite. With that being said both films are better than the other. Btw, I'm looking forward to your big screen debut and watching someone else do a video praising your decisions.
Memories of Murder - 100%. The plot, the screenplay, the character journeys, the spectacular camera work, the music, that chase scene, the climax. It's in my top 3 movies of all time.
I’ll never forget learning that the real life killer who’s murders this film was based on, watched the film. So in the end, when the detective stares directly into the camera, he’s staring into the eyes of the real life murderer.
FYI. After about three decades from initial murder in Hwaseong , korean police finally caught the killer whose name is Lee Chun Jae(이춘재). Director Bong Jun Ho said that it felt so strange and complicated to see a real life killer. He wanted to meet the killer whem shooting the movie if he had a chance, but in 2020 when the real killer was caught, director Bong said he would not like to meet the killer.
@@ShortyTwo42 the other comment has more details. I know when the movie was released, they didn't catch him yet but it's kind of like a Golden State Killer thing where more recently he was found
I don't think this is entirely accurate. I believe when the film was released, the killer was already caught but for another crime (family-related). So, unless he was able to watch the film in prison, I don't think he has seen the film at all. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
wasn't it more like the director kind of thought or knew that when the movie is released, the real serial killer would be watching, so he made the ending scene like that. so that the serial killer will be looking straight into the eyes of the detective if ever he'll be watching.
A scene that always stuck with me is the ending when the kid told the detective the killer just looks like an average korean and the detective stared directly at the camera, at the audience, implying that 1. anyone you know or around you could be the/a killer, 2. the film breaks the fourth wall by directly acknowledging that the killer himself is probably watching.
One of my all time favourite , a timeless classic of atmospheric horror and the fact that this is based on a real life incident just adds to the gloom .

I first watched this on July 2nd, 2020. I remember it so clearly because when I finished it, I was curious and looked up the case, and was instantly overwhelmed. During the exact two hours I was watching it, was when the real-life killer was identified and confirmed as the culprit, including some cases they had no idea about. The film was a really thrilling, interesting watch, but it was still so far away, the string of violence happening before I was even born. Then, all of a sudden, it felt like it might as well have been happening next-door. It being announced at the moment I was watching this horrible investigation, gave me that really heavy dread kind of fear... the timing was absolutely freaky, it left me unnerved for a week
Memories of Murder is based on a harrowing series of real life crimes that have spanned for years or decades. The visuals of this film are otherworldly. You can clearly see how eerie and hopeless the characters look. They’re trapped in an endless cycle of events that will continue to haunt them for a long time. South Korea may seem like a utopia to some, but in reality, it’s just like any other country out there in the world that continues to suffer the consequences as a result of other peoples’ actions. Great analysis as always.
Who are these people thinking South Korea is utopia? The closest place to that would be nordic countries. Are you talking about their pop fans? Coz most people know there's entertainment and irl. Most people are aware that school workload, gender equality, and suicide rates are a big problem in south korea

The paper says that the identity of the Killer could not be determined. "Inconclusive" is was it says. This happened in the 1980s. Not conclusive meant they were not wrong. Meant they could not make arrest. Hence the exacerbated frustration of the police officers.

Come on man. The theory that he kicks only with his RIGHT leg because he's a RIGHTEOUS character is such a stretch not even elastic man could catch that.
Well yeh, but it was intended by the director + it makes a lot more sense and is a lot more intuitive in Korean- just happens to work in English as well albeit not as great ;)
Loved the video. I have one question though, I don't know if this was how my copy of the film subtitled the DNA results or what the original intention of the text in Korean, but I believed the results were "inconclusive", as if there's no way to tell if he is guilty or innocent. In a couple of plot summaries that I read trying to clear it up, it is also mentioned that the result was inconclusive.
Hi,we made short film inspired/reffrence by memories of murders too, feel free to watch (: just search RASIAN (2023) on youtube 🙏🏻.Dont forget to leave your comment and thought! thank you (:
Agreed. I believe the implication at the end of the movie is that he could be the killer, but there is no conclusive evidence. In a way, the DNA results exonerating him would be better, because that would at least be something definitive that the detectives could latch on to. The result of "inconclusive" is much worse for them because it denies any concrete certainty, which at this point in the story they are desperate for.

I would care about colors and visuals in general if the story was believable. Detectives have single digit IQs and only good part in the movie are flying kicks. Several women have died in our small town, but how could it be a bad idea to still work alone at night. ohh, randomness. The movie plays with randomness but only with opposite parts of its spectrum - detectives are either extremely unlucky or lucky. Key events occur because of very bizzare circumstances. Why is this so hyped? "Ordinary" - this is giving you chills? Sorry, I am just dissapointed. I expected much more based on how much I have heard about this movie.

"They are indistiguishable from the bleak world that surrounds them, because they're part of the problem" I really hate how funny but actually problematic their methods are capturing those suspects. The flying kicks.
I could never tetris together these parallels, but I wonder if they are your theories or are they actually verified by the filmmakers? Regardless the watch is entertaining and educational. Question: what of the blue waste basket (in the police station, seen at the 10:16 mark in this video)?
And this movie is telling the story about how 80’s Korea was complicated. Their system, media, cultures, the government, young people’s thinking etc…Those stuffs are very complex. Those scripts are very Korea.

The paper says that the identity of the Killer could not be determined. "Inconclusive" is was it says. This happened in the 1980s. Not conclusive meant they were not wrong. Meant they could not make arrest. Hence the exacerbated frustration of the police officers.

So beautifully done
One of the best films i’ve ever seen
I love your videos! Memories of Murder is my all time favourite movie. It really is a masterpiece
So impressing, so sophisticated and so informative an analysis of the visual storytelling .
Thank you always for a terrific video!
Red, Green, Blue and White…the colors of the south korean emblem.
This video was amazing. It made me realize how much I actually have yet to learn about cinematography.

Amazing analysis as always. Kudos.
I loved this movie but this analysis makes me appreciate it all the more.
I completely rediscovered this film thanks to your analysis
WAIT I JUST NOTICED HALWAY THROUGH THAT I WATCHED THIS A LING TIME AGO, I LOVE THIS MOVIE
Director Bong Joon-ho 's bestest and greatest movie for sure and the ending montage man 🔥🔥🔥
Come on man. The theory that he kicks only with his RIGHT leg because he's a RIGHTEOUS character is such a stretch not even elastic man could catch that.
Well yeh, but it was intended by the director + it makes a lot more sense and is a lot more intuitive in Korean- just happens to work in English as well albeit not as great ;)
@@SpikimaMovies Oh I didn't know the same word game applies in korean, what a coincidence!

It would be so great if you make the viedo about decision to leave!!! It's such a masterpiece
Bong Joon Ho is one of the greats.
Damn your videos are amazing

any thoughts for Drunk?👀 13:35
Honey wake up, spikima uploaded!
One of the best vieos I have watched on this platform.
This is so brilliant and just adds to my appreciation of film!
I love this movie a lot. The drop kicks are insane though

This movie was awesome. The ending was a huge wait what moment cause the kid was like "He just looks ordinary" as in it could be the person watching the film.

My favorite korean film. One of the best in cinematic history.
"They are indistiguishable from the bleak world that surrounds them, because they're part of the problem"
I really hate how funny but actually problematic their methods are capturing those suspects. The flying kicks.
I could never tetris together these parallels, but I wonder if they are your theories or are they actually verified by the filmmakers? Regardless the watch is entertaining and educational.
Question: what of the blue waste basket (in the police station, seen at the 10:16 mark in this video)?
Very astute breakdown, I was wondering how you get the clips for these video essays?
How did you get the og version of the film? All the new releases are restored and have a greenish tint on every scene
And this movie is telling the story about how 80’s Korea was complicated. Their system, media, cultures, the government, young people’s thinking etc…Those stuffs are very complex. Those scripts are very Korea.

Hi! Does anyone knows what camera was used to shoot this film?
Best Bong Joon Ho movie ever.
기예르모 델토로 감독의 리뷰와 이걸 봤습니다. 예술 작품이란 그저 본다면 쉽게 볼수있지만 그 깊이는 보이는 만큼 본다는게 맞는거 같아요 감사합니다

Masterful analysis
Memories is still my favorite of his, even though Parasite is so critically acclaimed and might be better in some parts.
