    You may want to cover the floor boards with an old piece of heavy linoleum so it's easy to clean. We used an old chair mat for under an office chair and it's perfect!

Always nice watching someone with good wood working knowledge and a great personality to go with it! I liked your idea of a creep feeder for your chicks. Never thought about it for birds before. I've got 22 chicks coming in April and that will be a good addition to my coop. Thanks for some good ideas. Happy trails on all your adventures on your place! And God bless you and your family! The place is coming along, looking great! I love the work you do, nice and neat, and the meals look delicious!!! You're great parents with a great daughter and you're raising her how I was raised and how I raised my children!!! It is super awesome to see you all participate in roll playing as well as your teaching her real life situations and self sufficiency, BUT even more awesome is seeing the 3 of you pray before every meal. That is something that I wasn't taught about every meal and so I wasn't in the ritual of doing so to teach to my kids, though we talked about GOD, The Bible and prayed most nights, we generally missed meal times, it is something I wish I had done, and I am really glad to see you doing so!!! Praise the LORD!!!
    My daughter and I love asparagus slightly sautéed in olive oil with garlic salt(California Blend with parsley mixed in) and Mrs. Dash or similar and just before reaching the cooked level desired squeezing about 1 to 2 tablespoons of lemon juice just enough to warm the juice then out of the skillet. Add the juice, salt and blended seasonings to your flavor preferences. We love it this way, it cuts a bit of the strength of the flavor of the asparagus just a touch, and just adds more layers to the flavor of the dish as well.
    We like it cooked so that some or the fresh crispness is still left. I prefer most of my veggies to still retain some of that garden freshness to them, cooked but still some of the fresh rawness as well. That way I also know I haven't harmed all of the nutrients by over cooking also! Or at least that's the way it seems to me and the way I like to think it makes them...LMBO!!!
    Much love and many blessings, love and grace of our LORD GOD ALMIGHTY, unto you and yours, today, tomorrow and forever!!!

    The asparagus looks great. Thick ones like you had today can be used almost to the end if you peel the tough outer skin like you do with the carrots. Start about where you would normally break them and peel off the outer skin to almost the end.it is as good as the softer tips. I do understand you guys don’t waste the scraps by giving to the animals so it’s not like you are wasting any but asparagus is so good I like to maximize them. My wife and I like your channel and don’t miss any of them. All the best!

    We raised a few lambs. They were so cute when they were babies that I thought we could never part with them. When they grew up they really changed, though. It’s like “nobody was home.” So when it came to processing them we didn’t feel so bad about giving them up.
    One of the lambs we raised was a rejected triplet. Our daughter named her Lullaby. One day when she was a few weeks old I was bottle feeding her while sitting on the floor. She got distracted by one of my children, so I reached out to her and caught her tail. I had forgotten that the farmer who bred her had put a rubber band around her tail - and it fell right off in my hand! The kids shrieked with laughter but were afraid I had hurt her.
    We all soon discovered that our little black sheep was just fine! She soon lost her sweet personality, though, and became a farm animal destined for the freezer.
    She ate only the flowers and leaves from the alfalfa we fed her. That turned out to be the best lamb we have ever eaten! The luxury feed was worth it!

    Raising the chicks in view of the hens is what I always did. I used chicken. Fencing and when the chicks were older, maybe half grown, left them run with the hens. They didn't fight when they were joined together. Mine were true free range. The gardens were fenced but the hens ran totally free. They always came in at night and all was well.

Just halter them as youngsters if you have young stock or place halter on mature animals and handle daily. Good luck! :)

    Gooooooood Morning Al , Gina & Olivia ,
    I had 43 degrees F yesterday which was nice but also raining a little. Not so nice. Then last night the temp dropped and I had snow ! I only got aout 1/2 " to an inch. Not so bad. But , with my uphill driveway , even 1/4" is a problem. This morning I have a low of 21 degrees F , Brrrrr It's interesting to see how different people are from different areas. I have a Chinese girlfriend. Her daughter is here for visit. They are from southern China , near Hong Kong. They are both here inside of the house at 74 degrees F with jackets on. While Olivia is out and about with just a long sleeved shirt on playing in the snow .
    Gina , I have always prepared asparagus the same way that you are. Snapping off the ends of the stalk. It always seemed wasteful considering the cost of fresh of asparagus. My Chinese girlfriend , Ling , peels the lower half of the asparagus stalk with a vegetable peeler and thus we are able to eat the whole stalk. It works well and considering the cost of asparagus it is worthwhile to do . Especially since asparagus is my favorite vegetable and I'm paying that expensive price.
    This way I get even more asparagus.

    • @DrewEdwardBacklas
      @DrewEdwardBacklas 4 года назад

      Poison Ivy Everything I have read points to overgrazing and inbreeding as the root cause of parasites and disease in sheep. If they are allowed to graze an area down to the roots rather than being rotationally grazed they consume their own feces as well as larva which reside at ground level. In my part of the country sheep typically need only be de-wormed once a year and grazed on native grass (rather than hay or grain)to be healthy and free from parasites. The reason it is expensive in the US has more to do with the popularity and availability of beef than the difficulty in raising sheep.

    Two possible concerns about the gap up by the roof.
    First is weasels. They are small and kill the chicken by biting the neck.
    2nd. The plastic roof if the raccoons can get a paw in there. I have had them rip my coop roof apart several times with their paws. Then they kept coming back until i got them in a live trap.
    I really like that coop.
    I prefer steers over lamb but its a choice😉

  • @matismf
    @matismf 4 года назад +15

    Are raccoons strong enough to tear through the plastic roofing you used on that coop? The gap you left between it and the blocking is large enough for them to get their hands and teeth into. And raccoons love them some free chicken dinners!

      Depends on time and motivation. My parents left on vacation and apparently a raccoon was trapped in their garage/ work shop. Returned to find a 3x3 ft. hole chewed through the strand board wall. Why such a large hole? You see the outside siding is metal roofing panels. That rascal just kept removing wood until he found a seam he could push and squeeze through. Hey, it was life or death for him. No hard feelings. LOL.

      We live in a suburban area in Indianapolis, IN and two years ago had a raccoon climb up a downspout to get on our roof then chewed and clawed its way through the shingles, tar paper and wood to get into our attic. The roofers added a metal ridge plate under the shingles this time so it couldn’t get through it again. Thus far so good. 😭 😀

    I worry that the creeper gate is too low if you use deep litter. If the bedding gets too deep, baby chicks can walk right through that chicken wire divider.

    The "tiny, tiny critter" you might need to worry about getting between the blocking and roof panels is a stoat.

      Or a rat snake. At least staple the smaller weave chicken wire like half inch or quarter inch. Ought to be stiff enough to "stand up" when stapled on 3 sides, then hand formed to fill the corrugated spaces.

    Lambs/Sheep are very cute, but they look kind of tricky to raise as well after watching Justin and Rebekah with them. So many minerals to get right or they have the runs and they are so timid. However, I’m sure Tanner would have a blast with “hearding” them. What about a cute highland cow?

      Justin Rhodes had no clue what he was doing. He didn't recognize worms in his sheep and they all suffered and died because of it. It just takes research to learn how to raise them and then you need to actually raise them and not just for your RUclips channel.

    There you go, maybe you can make Olivia a Coffee House (instead of a play house)
    On lamb I tend to put ginger and allspice, and in summer, slice a fig each and let them carmelize over the top when once the chop are almost done. lamb goes well with sweet, sorta like pork can be tasty with sweet,

Yes they are cute but oh my word do they taste so nice with a bit of mint sauce. or have a look at 'CAWL' (pronounced like cowl ) traditional soup/stew over here in Wales made from lamb our staple meat as it thrives on the steep grass hill sides that we have in abundance

    I'm concerned about the chicken wire window protection in the new coop. Why not add 1/2" hardware cloth, right over the chicken wire, for added protection from raccoons that are very adept at bending chicken wire to gain access to your birds. I believe that mink and weasels can crawl through chicken wire too. Just a thought!
