Brought The Sentinel on release back in 1984, poster was on my wall but unfortunately never made it back into the gatefold album, still one of my favourites prog albums, still play it 40 years later, as is the follow up, The Wedge, great box set purchased a couple of weeks ago, great to see this covered here
Thanks for this unboxing! I’m familiar with the sentinel but heard there was a whole other version the band had intended that the label put out! And this box has it!
I've heard of Pallas from rock music magazines but I have never had any of their albums or heard them until i got RUclips and I really like them have a great weekend and thank you Phil. 🎶🎶🎤🎸🎸🎹🥁🎶🎶
Great video, I too just recently discovered Pallas when I found The Cross and The Crucible Cd. Coincidentally my box set just arrived in the mail today and I am looking forward to listening to this over the weekend.
Nice video Phil that looks like a really nice box set! I discovered Pallas around the time of their `Beat The Drum` album released in 1999. I had a two track sampler cassette which I think came free with a music magazine? Anyway Pallas were on one side of the tape and another band (possibly Galahad?) were on the other. The Pallas song was called `Blood and Roses` and I absolutely loved it! The cassette version was slightly different from what ended up on the album and I do actually prefer the cassette version as it happens. Even so still great on the album and the album itself is well worth a listen!
Talk about a blast from the past! I saw Pallas on both The Sentinel and The Wedge tours in Glasgow. They were great and both those albums (featured here) were excellent. I’m glad to see they’ve been reissued.
i had the sentinel and the wedge on vinyl, but went when i sold all my vinyl a few years ago,so will defo get this box set,,keep up the good work phil.,great channel
Great to see Pallas, from my home town, in the spotlight. I first saw them playing a cover of Echoes at the bar ar the ABC Bowl in Aberdeen in late 1970's or early '80's .... I have the originals of Arrive Alive and The Sentinel on LP ... which I got signed by Niall when my son's band were recording at his studio at Crathes (20 minutes away) a few years back. After a wee break ,post 1985, Pallas came back strong in the 90's + and were always a must see gig when they played in Abrrdeen ... over the last few years, they have played a few times in town ... last few times the venues (Tunnels, then Krakatoa) were just rammed and they played great... there's a download set on Bandcamp called Set List that is well worth checking out to see how the band had evolved by 2010+ when the songs from across their career up to that point were recorded as they prepared to do a tour... thereafter, the recent 3 albums are great ... with the latest, The Messenger, (late in 2023) being one of my albums of the year (try to get the mediabook version ... it is a great wee package) ... Thanks again for video ... CMcG, Aberdeen, Scotland (p.s. on a semi-related topic, will you be reviewing the latest deluxe releases by Fish of each of Vigil and Internal Exile? Be interested to hear your views)
P.s. for info, Set List 2013 is just £8 on Bandcamp (Midas Touch can be listened to as a taster - great track) ... and there's also a free sampler there at the top of the download option listing ... mix of stuff over the years ...
Can remember getting the Sentinel back in the day, great band who were overshadowed by Fish era Marillion saw them couple time around time of their first album. Some of Pallas later albums are well worth checking out.
A bit of trivia - Niall Matthewson's dad was a technical trainer in BT and I attended several training courses where he'd give us the latest updates on what his son was doing in Pallas, that would have been between 1982-1987 when I was working in BT. I am like you, though, because I've never checked the band out - if it came to Scottish prog then I always went for Fish's Marillion first (never been a fan of Marillion since Fish left). But I will check this box set out.
I really liked "The Sentinel" back when it came out, but soon after that i discovered IQ and their album "The Wake" and even more importantly Marillion with "Script...." and that changed everything for me. So Pallas got me into Neo Prog, but that's about it with my relationship with this band. But i will give them another chance. Maybe with the experience of 40 years of rock music, i can appreciate them a bit more.
Remember at the time seeing the cover to The Sentinel and being mightily impressed by the artwork. Knew nothing about the band music wise except that they were "prog" and my mindset at the time did not make space for that. Bad call at the time but made up for it now. A beautiful box set.
Thanks Phil 😂 I did not know this band was over 50 . I'm pretty sure I had a cd some years ago . They were really popular in the Prog magazine , maybe it's one of their sampler cds I heard them off ? A terrific band . Amazon have this for a great price . Totally love these Esoteric box sets . Thanks Phil ❤😂
Hey Phil, good to see Pallas get some air-time. I saw them in this period supported by Solstice and Trilogy. Really enjoyed them then. ironically I didn’t follow on from what I heard and although I have some of their albums I don’t have a whole lot. Shame on me really, In the mid eighties I started a family and money was short, nevertheless I remember them with a smile.
No prog in the 80s? WHAT?... Phil you don't know there was a whole UK prog movement in the 80s?... NWOBPR (New Wave of British Progressive Rock)? Great bands like Twelfth Night, Pallas, Marillion, IQ, Solstice, Pendragon, Abel Ganz, among many more.

You've read my comments on these and the other CD versions of these albums and I'm glad you have finally discovered my hometown band.
Thank you 🙏

Hi Phil, thank for this unboxing. I have never heard of this band, but because of you I will check them out.
Oh my goodness I want this!! I’d love to have it.
I really like the track “throwing stones to the wind. “ It is incredibly catchy.
Great video, I too just recently discovered Pallas when I found The Cross and The Crucible Cd. Coincidentally my box set just arrived in the mail today and I am looking forward to listening to this over the weekend.
I missed out on them in the 80s too, which is why I was so happy to see this boxset.
Their most recent album The Messenger is really good too.

This is a band I've heard of, but am completely unfamiliar with. Time to investigate.🎸
Really enjoyed The Sentinel and The Wedge, and then I fell away as I think they did for some time
I was a big Fish era Marillion fan but never listened to Pallas - will have to check them out

Great to hear, without the internet back then I just had no idea 🤷♂️
😄👍
Calling Marillion a "Scottish band" is a bit of a stretch Phil.
Sorry my mistake - Phil
