If only Charles had grown a shiny spine from the start, stood up to his mother and defended his love for Camilla instead of dragging an innocent teenage girl into the middle of his family drama to be a sacrificial lamb in exchange for his heirs. Poor Diana Spencer would probably still be alive today and happily married with a family, though she would be significantly less famous. Charles also would have had a long, happy marriage, and he and Camilla would not be despised by the majority of the world for destroying a young woman in the journey of their lives together. No one hates them because they love each other, they are hated for how they went about being together and for pointlessly destroying innocent lives in their wake.

The only places that matters is Britain, since the rest of the world has no say on whether we're a monarchy or not, and they rarely leave here.
And they aren't hated. The strong feelings regarding Diana are long gone. There's just polite disinterest in the pair of them, they are placeholders until we get William and Catherine, who we like.

Asking as an American: What is likable about Camilla? Diana was always seen as an angel. Beautiful, kind, caring, brave, and relatable. Camilla is seen as ugly, selfish, mocking, and inconsiderate of anyone but herself. Maybe my view is skewed by the publicity in my country?

As was the norm with children in the British upper classes and the aristocracy, Prince Charles was raised by Nannie’s. They rarely saw their parents. Both Prince Charles and Princess Anne spent far more time with their grandparents, the King and Queen, than with their parents. Charles has been described as a very spoiled, pampered and indulged child. Especially because he was heir to the throne. He got what he wanted. Being spoiled and pampered carried over into being an adult.
But what he craved was motherly love. Which is why he gravitated towards older, motherly women. Camilla and Lady Dale Tryon are perfect examples. Plus others. They fussed over him and mothered him. Which he LOVED. Diana was no match for that. She was far too young to understand his “mother” issues. She sadly had her own “mother” issues and was totally unprepared to mother a grown man child. Emotionally Diana could not provide what Charles needed. AND visa versa. He couldn’t meet HER very deep emotional insecurities. They were two different planets.

Perfectly good marriages? Liz, you really thought it was in Charles’ and Diana’s best interest to stay together? You yourself insisted they finally divorce. I know this is fiction, but it she had anything like this attitude, she was ridiculous. A good half of marriages end in divorce. Time to accept reality and give up these outdated opinions from the 19th century.

Feckless. He fought tooth and nail for his little cake. But always against the wrong person. And this idea that The Crown shows of him going to PR war against Diana. He kept hurting and attacking the wrong person. Cuz he needed to be the Heir to the crown, so he had to abide by the norms.
So marry this young girl your family wants, but still have your mistress to be a tampon to (you would think a royal would be more poetic) , when your mistress gets an emotion boo boo cuz your wife is more amazing and beloved. Punish and hurt your wife.
Like ….if you are that dead set. be a man. And tell your family this is what I want and drag the whole damn institution with you. Instead drive your wife to despair. Make her despondent and VULNERABLE to anyone giving her attention and affection. And when she died remarry to the woman you love.
A life snuffed out because king chuck had no strength, backbone and courage.

My Dear Sir: AMEN to everything you’ve stated here. I don’t know how true it is, but I read that the Powers That Be denied Charles their blessings to marry Camilla years ago because they found out from an investigation of Camilla that she ALLEGEDLY lived with a boyfriend. If there’s ANY truth to this, The Powers That Be must have FEARED the chances of Camilla’s past being revealed to the world after the marriage of Charles and Camilla.
💡Upon Charles and Diana’s marriage announcement, I recollect that one anonymous source stated that Diana was chosen because she was a woman who had “a HISTORY, …. but no PAST.”
