To be fair is not really separated from everything else, persona 5 is the most smt persona game since 2, it has a lot of references to smt like destiny land, the apocalypse happends (it gets fixed but happends), god appears in a very similar way to smt2, the shido palace takes place in a flooded Tokyo like the cathedral from smt1, it has something like alignment endings and demon negotiation returns, plus no one points that when you obtain a new persona the game tells you that it happends because they remember they are demons and come from the sea of souls wich is a concept from persona 1, game that is totally smt. Persona 5 narrative acknowledges that it is an smt game, in a subtle way but is definitely there.
In other words persona is not less smt, is just marketed separately because it makes more money than any other franchises from atlus. Persona 5 is conected to 3 and 4, 3 is conected to 2 and 1, SMT IF is conected to persona 1 and devil summoner, from there you can totally say that is still smt.

@@BlackRoseCloud I'm on the same boat, my friend. I still think Persona is a good Megaten spin-off, but I wouldn't put it above any mainline SMT entry (including the SNES releases). I mean, the neo Persona combat system feels like a watered down version of the press turn system, which in my opinion is one of the best rpg battle systems. Doing mad damage at endgame bosses is really cool. Also, you have a big variety of demons to select as party members rather than just 5 or 6 characters. And speaking of the demons, that's one of the main reasons I got interested in SMT alongside the story (which I don't understand why some people call it "bland"). The characters I can understand if they are not as appealing as the ones presented in Persona, but that's how the game intended to present them because they are just representing an ideology which is you are supposed to follow one of them ore neither at the end of the game.
Sorry for the big Bible I just wrote, but I feel like people who dislikes SMT for these kind of aspects is the same people who does a playthrough of their favorite neo persona every once in a month...

Obviously atlus is a business so they wanna make games that they think would make money so they make a bunch of persona spinoffs but they really should give some love to mainline. Hopefully we get some news about smt 5 this because I'm really worried about it and the mainline series future

And the worst part is that SMT 5 Could be a success nowadays...Back in the days games like nocturne where not very popular since jrpgs where kinda colorful and very square related. The worst part is that now smt 4 and smt apocalypse kinda appear more appealing for personish fans. but think about it, a very dark theme game with hardcore mechanics... blablabla something that would be appreciated nowadays.... I see a lot of people saying stuff like I like battle mechanics of persona but high schoolers idols etc kinda turn me off... SMT would be very good for mature gamers that like turn based rpgs.

They need to give it time, persona 5 had a ton of time developing and the emphasis on the side crap kinda paints a wrong picture. Persona 4 and 5 had 8 year difference, 9 if you consider the western release, in here he doesn't accept a 3 year difference before the fatalism, not to mention that (with all do respect to Nintendo's handhelds) it was on an inferior console while p5 was on Sony's hardest and finest.
The switch is special, something that hasn't been in a long time. Its popular and powerful enough to give a fresh experience like p5 did compared to p4 and bring SMT to a new level. Don't rush it, give them the time they need to truly invest and you will get what you want

    2. Persona games are being made by a different division from Atlus, the P Studio, so no, it's not taking their time to develop.
    3. Between Persona 4 and 5 (not counting Golden cause it's a re-release) there's been 8 years, so it's not like the Shin Megami Tensei games are the only ones taking a long time to come.

About the SMT moniker thing; I don't think it should come back on Persona, because it never was like that in Japan, which is the real important point of reference since it's the language it was made in originally, and is where is a large majority of the playerbase at. The SMT moniker was always just a way to push those game that are from the Megami Tensei universe as a whole since they were rather obscure in the west. Digital Devil Saga, Devil Summoners, and Persona were never really Shin Megami Tensei games, and they were never labelled as such in Japan, it was always just different series in the grand Megami Tensei universe. In the end, Persona dropping the SMT title simply means that it became popular enough to stand on its own in the west, like it does and always did in Japan. I think it's right.
Tho imho, considering the last SMT game was on 3DS which isn't really too popular among the mainstream western audience, and that the one before that is now pretty old, I think it's safe to assume that thing should change considerably once SMTV is released on an actual desktop-style console; With the improvement in presentations and the fact that this is now on a home console, it will make for a perfect entry point in the series for many people, including some Persona and other Atlus's RPG fans. I honestly think it will ignite SMT's flame back again. I think the whole gritty atmosphere of SMT has way more potential than Persona for western fan, popularity wise. We just need a game to showcase the strength of SMT to the mainstream as well as Persona 5 did for the Persona series as a whole.

      Plus, as a general ruleish.
We have gotten more SMT focus recently in the past few years and honestly, it has always been a niche series. It does not however mean that Persona 'killed' SMT. It literally just means that Persona became somehow more popular; probably because for lack of better term, dumber and more tropey (in a good way, i truly mean this.)
SMT is more philosophy and hardcore story telling. But because it has demons, angels who probably only know because of persona (and not because of myth) and it is because it is uhh
more 'narrow'. Selling someone on SMT will be much, much harder then Persona.
In short, no SMT is doing fine. It just has a smaller community and that is arguably because it is more complicated, is niche multimythicalism and has a narrow, very specific audience. For better or worse, Persona's is more popular because it is essentailly an anime sim. Still love both for different reasons.

You guys are blaming the wrong culprit my dudes. SMT was killed by Atlus original parent company: Index Corporation. These guys took a lot of debt put it on Atlus and drove them to bankruptcy. That is the reason why Atlus stopped being Atlus, because Atlus is gone.
Then Sega bought the licenses and rebranded their Dream Studio to Atlus and everyone working on SMT and Persona became the P-Studio. And once P5 was released the dude who directed the P games since 3 was rewarded with a new studio: Studio Zero, he took a bunch of veterans from Atlus and is working on his passion project and Full body.
So in conclusion modern Atlus is the Sega Dream studio, because they are a SEGA studio they are not interested on making SMT games, except for the main line games. P Studio is basically there to make Persona and pay the bills. Studio Zero which is what became of og Atlus moved on from the franchise altogether and is making a new IP and full body.

If you asked me in 2017 when the Switch game was confirmed to be Shin Megami Tensei V, I would have said it's absolutely alive and well. Now though? I'm living my worst fear.
I like Persona, but it's not what drew me to Shin Megami Tensei, and it's certainly not a replacement. Nothing compares to the Press-turn gameplay system, and I much prefer stories with a focus on grey morality and a battle between ideologies that the players themselves have to decide on which alignment is the best.
I keep hearing people say Nocturne's characters aren't as likeable and therefore not as good, but that's missing the point. They're not supposed to be your friends, you're only supposed to empathise with one of them, that being the one whose views and outlook on life best mirror your own. Same with SMT IV, and the Devil Survivor games. They all have great characters who serve their purpose in the games. To want SMT to conform to its own more successful spin-off is ludicrous when, from a quality-of-life standpoint, Persona 5 is STILL missing much-needed improvements that SMT IV and Apocalypse made to the turn-based combat years beforehand (such as the Smirk system rebalancing Mudo and Hama skills), and even then Apocalypse suffers from hokey dialogue and a pathetic alignment system that favours one route above all others.
if, and when we eventually get SMT V, I hope they don't pander to Persona fans. We have enough milktose moe-anime games on the market, and while Persona is generally one of the more respectable examples, it has no place trampling over the unique and still high-tier JRPG series it was born from.

Definitely will have to agree. SMT has a world that's really unique to it, and while Persona games are still based on the premise of SMT, the style is fundamentally different, which also places Persona as having its own unique world. The grim nature of SMT and its explicitly obvious religious undertones throughout the whole game are just breathtaking and leave me pondering for houuurs.
Honestly, people who dislike the game because they dislike the characters I think are missing the point of the game. Like you said, SMT's characters serve their purpose and they do a great job at it, which is to morally confuse you and present you with conflicting ideas that may or may not conflict with your own, all from a super philosophical standpoint at that.
Though I can't say much since I haven't played Persona yet, I just feel like it doesn't capture the same feeling. If you like the work of Persona go play Persona, Persona 4 and 5 and amazing from what I've seen and have plenty of content to play there (I actually really want to play them since they look amazing in their own right), but what Persona does shouldn't affect what happens in SMT V, it's a whole different beast.

I honestly don't think that Persona has actually killed SMT rather, it pushed SMT to the backburner.
It's easily the most profitable thing Atlus has and they were going through some financial issues in the past that Sega had to save them to keep making games. I'm willing to bet that they have a minimum gross that they have to make, or else they'll be liquidated. I don't know for sure, but I can assume that whatever is causing Atlus' neglect of SMT as a whole is probably business related.
I still don't like how little effort is being put into everything though. It seems like Atlus is trying to maximize profit rather than make complete products, and it makes me mad. Because I want to see better.
It also doesn't help that they refuse to communicate what's going on. Like, they're a big company, why not let us know? It at least allows us to know if something is still in development, rather than waiting and wondering if it was cancelled. It's an ass backwards decision that is really the worst part of it all. I learned about Atlus through Disgaea - which was a double-duty to introduce me to NIS, and I tried Nocturne afterwards. Putting it mildly, that game was way too much for me to dive into. I wound up getting Digital Devil Saga on the grounds "Atlus does not release huge batches of physical games" at the time; it very much is a favorite of mine, and I need to go back and . . . get beaten down again by Demifiend. Ahem.
Anyway, I steered away from the Persona series on hearing about how you could legitimately not do everything in one play. Not as "you need to pick a path and see it through" in Nocturne, but "time management is a major factor". I wound up eventually biting the bullet and doing Persona 5 for myself, and don't regret it at all. Probably won't go backwards, since I can see things which were trimmed out of the games in the latest iteration which would royally piss me off to deal with if they were in P5 (reversed social links, like . . . no, no no no no).
Atlus produces a lot of games outside of these, though, distributes more - and they get less attention. I feel that is more of something to lament than "The Shin Megami Tensei branding's been lost from the spinoffs". I mean, I was around when the first Mana game was hacked into a "Final Fantasy" title by Squaresoft - I'd much rather different series not be branded to grab peoples' attention. In this case, that'd mean I'd prefer Persona to just be its own line and remain distinct.
. . . now if you don't mind, I need to lament how the Quintet/Enix series was a goddamn mess from "Soul Blazer" to "Terranigma".

To me, a lot of this video is from the point of view of the western consumer.
In Japan, Persona has NEVER carried the SMT moniker. It was simply added here in the west to capitalize on an existing trademark.
The point when the real shift happened with Persona was around 2012 to 2013, which was the point when ATLUS's parent company declared bankruptcy, leaving the company dead in the water to struggle on their own. Projects like SMT x Fire Emblem changed focus to appeal to idol culture as it was popular in Japan at the time, and SMTIV had the White ending added, which created a finality to the series in case they really did go belly-up. SEGA only finalized its ownership of ATLUS in 2016, and until then ATLUS milked their most popular game, Persona 4, for as much cash as possible so they could survive.
Now, I'm hoping that ATLUS is back on its feet with the massive influx of money brought by Persona 5, but I really have no idea what their financial situation has been, or currently is.
I just want Shin Megami Tensei V.

an issue also worth mentioning is that games are getting more and more expensive to produce. For a smaller studio like Atlus, Persona was the safest bet since Persona 4 was the best selling game in the company's history at the time. This is why we've gotten nothing but handheld games for the mainline/non-persona spinoffs. They cost less to make, so they're safer bets. I'm just gonna ignore the whole argument of how Atlus treats Persona vs how it treats SMT, because its a puddle I'm not step in yet. I'm just gonna say one thing: SMT V is so important because its the first full 3D entry in the series since Nocturne, and the first one in HD. We know that Atlus wants to give us more info on it (i think it was one of their focuses for this year alongside Cathering Full Body, but don't quote me one that. I think it was just on their holiday card or something. I can't quite remember) but the fact SMT V exists is enough to give me hope. Atlus should try and be more experimental for sure in the near future, but they did give us Dx2 here in the West, which was fun enough, and it feels like their trying to create a buffer so they can be more experimental. I think it's safe to say SMT is the still the passion of the company, they just have to be smart and release Persona games to maintain the costs to keep that passion alive

It worth noting that the reason Atlus made so many spinoffs/side-games for the franchise back in the 90s and the PS2 era is because of the lower cost for game develoment back then, and SMT _was more popular_ in Japan back then(since that was before the blowout success of Pokemon and FF7), which is why they decided to go all out with their franchise at that time.
Now after PS3/Xbox360 era, game development costs increased A TON, and that was the primary reason Atlus never made a single MegaTen RPG on HD consoles. They were still a small japanese company and could never afford to do it, and instead choose to develop for PS2 even late in it's lifecycle(same goes for DS, 3DS, PSP, PS Vita).
And they really can't risk making anymore SMT spinoffs on consoles currently, because they know most SMT fans who own modern consoles would prefer a mainline game with decent-great graphics, over yet another spinoff. Besides, the're already more spinoffs then the're main SMT and Persona games combined. and really that's why they went with SMT5. They basically chose to give the fans the best thing they could afford to do.
However I personally think maybe, JUST MAYBE. if SMT5 sells well, Atlus could go back to making MegaTen games in general by reusing all the assets they made for demons in SMT5 and taking advantage of Unreal engine to develop those games in lesser time and more efficiently(exactly how they did in the PS2 era after they finished Nocturne). Though that depends if the SMT dev team wants to continue making MegaTen games all their lives, or just make fresh new games like Studio Zero with Project Re Fantasy.
EDIT: Pardon my bad English. I was typing very fast there.

    • @lucasbueno5720
      @lucasbueno5720 5 лет назад

I personally think that Project Re Fantasy has a place in that debate as well. If a completly new game from ATLUS reach Persona 5 levels of fame, SEGA would inject more money into the company as a whole and they could afford to try to make HD sequels do Devil Summoner and the other series that time killed

      @dinglberry3320 5 лет назад

@IT IS A HUGE SCORPION WITH EVIL SOUL >Project re fanatsy is only being made because hashino made persona popular so they green light his personal project.
How do you know that though? Do you work for Atlus?
I did some research about it to check if you're right or not. What I found was that Atlus said back in 2017 that they were planning to open a new studio to make new IPs. which turned out to be this Studio Zero. Apparently they are working two projects simultaneously, one of them is completely unknown while the other is Re Fantasy. Atlus president said in a Famitsu interview that they entrusted the studio to Katsura Hashino specifically because they didn't have anyone free to do the job(It was when he finished work on P5 at the time), also because he was one of the most trusted developers for them. That's pretty much all there is to it.
As for Kazuma Kaneko. Why would he even get to make his own game project? Can he? As far as I know he was mainly an artist for Atlus, not a veteran game designer. He didn't even create the Megaten series himself, he worked on it for 25 years but that's it. Also apparently, he's became a top manager at Atlus. which is why he's not the artist for SMT anymore.

The reason I think as to why it has been so rarely discussed nowadays is simply cause things have been so quiet on the SMT front. Since, what have we gotten since Persona's rise to power? One game on the 3ds and it's sequel (a sequel I don't consider canon btw) that where somewhat low budget where series creators only took a back seat role, that sorry excuse of a crossover on the Wii U, a remake of a rather under the radar title, and practically nothing since SMTV was teased.

I mean, original SMT games got official english translation on IOS. They never re-released those games in english, so no suprise many people don't know them. Everything else is just the case of - if new formula works, let's go on with it. Persona 3 and 4 were huge success not only in Japan, but outside as well. Atlus finally distributed more games from SMT made after that. Naturally that they tried to make them look like Persona series, the one that cought everyone's attention.

True im European, and just i want buy original SMT 1, 2, IF trilogy, but those games was never localised/remastered in West. So its only way to pirate them and use fan translation patch. If Sony didnt say ,,no'' to localisation first Devil Summoner on PSX, Persona Revelations propably will be not first spin-off SMT localised in West. Who knows, maybe Devil Summoner today will be more popular than Persona. Second, all main Persona games was released on popular platform - Playstation, most of SMT games on niche consoles in West like SNES, Saturn, DS, 3DS (except 3 PS2 games). Thats only one reason why Persona now is more popular than SMT (second is popular highschool setting, dating sim, waifus and anime tropes). Maybe ATLUS redeem sins and in future finaly rerelease older SMT games on Steam.

I don't think it's elitist to be upset with Atlus as a company for the way they've been treating a series that, while not their most popular or profitable still has a pretty sizable following. (Granted we finally have a release date for SMT V) Your feelings and those of many SMT fans on that matter make sense.
What crosses into elitism is when SMT fans start giving Persona fans shit just because they like...enjoy playing a game? "Oh you like Persona 5? Psssh, go play a REAL SMT game." Like it's not a crime to enjoy something for the love of god. As a fan of both series, SMT just isn't for everyone, it's much more difficult and unforgiving, and generally less character driven. That shit just isn't what everyone looks for in a JRPG and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that! It's quite frankly just rude and jaded to act that way when what you're really mad about is how your series has been thrown on the back burner. That's not the fault of someone just having a good time with a video game they like, it's the fault of a company who's shown their main drive to be whatever can be their biggest cash cow whether it makes all sections of the fanbase happy or not.

As a Persona fan, I found this video incredibly helpful. I'm in love with 5, and vuagely heard about SMT here and there. With more info on SMT 5, I was curious to get into the series after I finish 5. I didn't realize any of this was an issue, and I'm glad I found your video giving your opinion on the topic.

Oh please. You think this is a betrayal, cause a company does what companies do and focus on what gives them success and not what always pleases its customers?
Try being a fan of something like Advance wars, whose been eclipsed by one of those series you mentioned, Fire Emblem. Or how Mega man fans only recently got a mega man game, and how Mega man legends fans got shafted by Capcom and blamed it on the fans or, and this is rich, released a Darkstalkers compilation that was successful but deemed "not successful enough" and thus any plans for a sequel canned. Or how Star Fox can't be allowed to move out of the shadow of the 64 title and became infamous for being a conspiracy theory that Nintendo dumped it on Rare as revenge for leaving them. And dont even get me started on what being a Beserk fan is like.
The series isn't dead, its just currently not as profitable as this one and of course what is making lots of money is going to get it. The nonenglish voice dub is a pragmatic decision for Persona Q2 and Deep Strange Journey. Persona Q2 has a massive cast and dubbing them all would take alot of time and money, with the latter DSJ having not been super successful to begin with in its original form. Besides, English text. Plus it probably helps that unlike the SMT where the concept and how demons and such works changes between games while in Persona its pretty consistent.

Minor correction, Kyuukaku isn't a spin-off, it is just the original Megami Tensei (before the "Shin" part, since you know these were loosely based on the original books) games packaged together as a re-release.
